Kinza sat up gingerly, expecting herself to be in pain, but it was the same with her. Her ribs no longer hurt, and her throat wasn’t raw anymore. She felt better, if still a bit tired. “I think I’m okay. What about you?” A wry smile appeared, and his eyes crinkled in amusement. “It seems I was the damsel in distress, and I was rescued by a very effective knight.” He looked up at her, gentle laughter in his eyes. She gave him a wry smile right back. The memory of the car ride to the house came back to her, and she glanced toward the doorway. “She’s not here, but—” he started to say, but Kinza cut him off. “I’m sorry,” she said, looking down at her hands in her lap.
