Sudden Death: The Drango, The Book and the Sacrifice

Alex opened his eyes, screamed and quickly sat up. Alex hadn’t realized he was at the edge of the bed when he sat up and ended up falling on the ground. He slowly lifted himself up and looked over the bed at his sister who was the cause of his accident.

‘Good your awake’ said Hunter smiling ‘Thanks for the show’.

‘You scared me’ said Alex standing up.

‘What time did you come to bed last night?’ asked Hunter ‘You don’t usually wake up after me’

‘There was a nice show on TV ’ said Alex smiling ‘It was about..’

‘Don’t care’ said Hunter cutting him off ‘See you down stairs’

Hunter turned and left the room. Alex scoffed and went to wash up. Once he was done he headed downstairs and found Hunter in the kitchen having breakfast. She just pointed at the micro wave without looking at him. Alex headed to the micro wave and found a plate of toast and egg. He got it and sat next to Hunter.

‘Where is Grams?’ Alex asked her.

‘Probably gone to do grandmothers stuff’ said Hunter shrugging.

‘So what do you wanna do today?’ Alex asked Hunter.

Hunter turned and looked at him, ‘None of your business’.

‘Well I’m gonna watch some tv then finish the novel I’ve been reading’ said Alex.

‘Nerd’ Hunter told him.

‘Witch’ Alex told her.

Hunter just smiled and continued eating her breakfast. After breakfast Alex cleaned up, when he looked out of the kitchen window he saw a man in the trees looking at him. He turned around to call Hunter but she was already gone, he turned back to the window and the man had disappeared. He found Hunter in the living room, he told her about the man but all Hunter did was stare at him. Alex just gave up and sat down to watch some TV.

‘Okay I’m off’ said Hunter standing.

‘Where are going?’ Alex asked her.

‘Look around’ said Hunter I’m tired of being here. ‘You coming?’

Alex switched off the TV and stood. They slowly left the house and started touring the small town. As they passed they got stares from some people.

‘I feel famous’ said Hunter putting her hands in her pockets.

‘They’re just wondering who we are’ said Alex as they came to an end of the road ‘Well I guess we turn back’.

Hunter looked at the trees then Alex and smiled.

‘No way’ said Alex looking at her.

‘Suit yourself’ said Hunter heading in.

‘Are you crazy!’ exclaimed Alex ‘who am I kidding you are’

Alex looked at the road then a disappearing Hunter in the trees he sighed and followed her in. they walked deeper and deeper into the forest which for some reason was so quiet not even crickets were heard. Then suddenly Hunter stopped walking .

‘I just saw something move over there’, said Hunter’, ‘Come on.’

‘Is this girl crazy or what', Alex said to himself as he followed Hunter.

Hunter and Alex continued in the forest, just then they saw a group of people dressed in black clocks, they quickly hid behind a rock and watched.

‘The time has come, the Drango must have its sacrifice’, said one man.

‘But master the sacrifice is not yet complete, we haven’t yet gotten all the requirements’, said another man.

‘That’s the man i saw in the morning’, whispered Alex to Hunter who looked at the man.

‘Yes master we have the Deer, lamb and cow but we don’t have the human sacrifices yet’ said another.

‘Human sacrifices?’ asked Alex and Hunter looking at each other surprised.

‘What was that?’ asked the master looking at the people.

‘it came from over there’ said one man ‘I shall check it out’

The man headed towards the rock were Hunter and Alex hid. When they saw him coming, Hunter and Alex slowly moved away from the rock and hid behind some bushes. The man reached the rock and found nothing, he looked around the area and stared at the bushes. Alex held his breathe and got ready to run. The man just turned around and went back. Hunter and Alex moved away from the area slowly, Hunter stepped on a twig making it snap. They looked at each other and bolted, they ran really fast through the trees and as usual Hunter was in the lead while Alex remained a few steps back. When they came out the forest they stopped by the road and caught their breathes.

‘Come on’ said Hunter ‘They might be following us’.

They started running again and this time they didn’t stop till they reached the house. Once in they both crashed on the ground out of breathe. Grams came out of the living room and looked at the two.

‘Where have you two been?’ Grams asked them.

Hunter just stretched her legs out and looked at Grams. She slowly stood up and took in a deep breathe.

‘We took a walk in the….’ But before Alex could finish Hunter had put a hand on his mouth.

‘All you need to know is that I have done exercise for a week’, said Hunter ‘And we walked through the town’ she looked at Alex ‘Right?’ Alex just nodded. Hunter removed her hand.

Some women came out of the living room into the passage way and looked at the kids.

‘Hello there’ said one woman looking at them.

‘Hi’ said Hunter looking at them.

‘Oh your grandkids are lovely’ said another.

‘Right’ said Hunter ‘Don’t even think about pinching my cheeks’

‘Oh my’ said another.

Hunter grabbed Alex’s hand and dragged him up the stairs. They heard a door slam. Grams looked at the other women and smiled.

‘Well we must be on our way’ said a woman.

‘Thank you for visiting’ said Grams as she opened the door.

The women said bye and left, their was a boy with blonde hair and blue eyes standing by the door.

‘Josh dear’ said Grams looking at him.

‘I brought your cutter back’ said Josh smiling at her and extending it to her.

‘I even forgot you had it’ said Grams getting it ‘How’s your mum doing?’

‘She’s…….’ but before josh could finish Hunter stormed down the stairs, he looked at her as she headed into the kitchen. Grams turned back to see what Josh was looking at then turned back to him.

‘A girl just rushed into the kitchen’ said Josh.

‘Of course’ said Grams smiling.

‘Darn it’ said Hunter coming out of the kitchen and heading upstairs.

‘Hunter?’ called Grams turning.

‘Yeah’ answered Hunter stopping and looking at Grams.

‘What’s wrong?’ Grams asked her.

‘I cant find my phone’ said Hunter ‘I thought I left it in the kitchen but its not there’

‘Have you checked your room?’

‘I’ll go do that now’ said Hunter turning and going up.

Grams turned and found Josh looking at her.

‘Oh Josh I forgot you’re here’ said Grams.

‘It’s no problem’ said Josh ‘I better get going’

‘Why don’t you stay for lunch’ Grams told him ‘Mi grandkids are new to the town and they could do with some friends’

‘Let me just call my mum and tellher I wont be home till later’ said Josh.

Grams nodded as Josh entered the house.

Hunter paced around the room as she thought hard.

‘I have a question’ Alex told her.

‘What?’ Hunter asked him.

‘Are you gonna give me my game or not?’

Hunter threw the game at Alex, Alex caught it but hurt his pinky in the process.

‘Ouch!’ he yelled.

‘My phone Alex’ said Hunter.

‘Were did you leave it?’ asked Alex.

‘I thought I left it in the kitchen but I guess I was wrong’ said Hunter sitting on the bed.

Alex looked at Hunter ‘By any chance did you have it when we went into the forest?'

Hunter looked at Alex and nodded ‘I guess I must have dropped it when we went into the forest’ she stood up ‘What if the guys find it then they’ll know we were in the forest and they’ll come and kill us for their sacrifice’

‘Calm down woman’ said Alex ‘We can go get it back and why did you stop me from telling Grams about the forest?’

‘What if we told her and those women were part of the cult?’ asked Hunter ‘I mean we didn’t even know they were around’

‘Your right’ said Alex ‘Now about your phone’

‘After lunch we’ll go back in the forest’ said Hunter ‘we need to find that phone’

Hunter walked out of the room and left Alex alone. Alex just lay down on his bed and closed his eyes, he soon fell asleep.

Alex woke up and found Hunter standing by his bed, he screamed and sat up.

‘Stop doing that!’ he exclaimed.

‘Grams is calling for us’ said Hunter ‘Lunch is ready’

Alex got up and they headed downstairs to the dining room.

‘I cant believe I slept’ said Alex as they walked.

‘Welll while you were asleep I went online to find something about the Drango’ said Hunter.

‘Well..’ said Alex.

‘Well what?’ asked Hunter.

‘What did you find?’ asked Alex.

‘Nothing absolutely nothing’ said Hunter.

‘Maybe we should try the library’, said Alex ‘We’ll go there after we find your phone’

‘Cool’ said Hunter as they entered the room.

They found Grams and a guy Hunters age sited at the table. Alex and Hunter slowly sat down, Hunter looked at the boy.

‘And what are you supposed to be?’ Hunter asked Josh.

‘This is Josh’ said Grams introducing him ‘This is Alex and Hunter’

‘I’m Alex before you confuse us’ said Alex ‘People always think she’s Alex and I’m Hunter’

‘Thanks for the info’ said Josh smiling at Alex.

‘Hunter did you find your phone?’ Grams asked.

‘It’s in my room charging’ said Hunter looking at her plate ‘The food looks great’

‘Thank you’ said Grams.

‘Hey Josh’ said Alex looking at Josh who was looking at Hunter.

‘Yeah’ answered Josh looking at Alex.

‘Do you know anything about the Drango?’ Alex asked him.

Hunter gave Alex a look that he knew so well meant he was dead.

‘Drango? What’s that?’ asked Grams.

‘I’ve only heard stories’ said Josh ‘I don’t know if their true’

‘Well say’ said Hunter looking at Josh.

‘You don’t talk much’ Josh told Hunter.

Alex got chocked and went into a coughing fit. Grams started hitting his back, Alex grabbed a glass of water and drank it all.

‘Oh God I almost died’ said Alex taking a deep breathe ‘Go on Josh’

“The Drango is a mythical creature that lives in some caves under the lake. Nobody knows what it looks like but only that its an evil creature. Each year the keepers, that are called seers give it a sacrifice a deer, a lamb, a calf and human sacrifices a girl and boy both teenagers”, said Josh.

“Why teenagers?”, asked Alex.

“Because in mythology that’s a symbol of immortality or something like that”, said Hunter.

“But you’re a teenager”, said Alex looking at Hunter.

“Yeah.. but doesn’t mean I’ll be sacrificed”, said Hunter not showing shes a bit scared.

“The sacrifice happens this time of year during the blood moon”, said Josh. “That’s all I remember”.

“How many teenagers are in Olahe?” Alex asked Josh.

“A lot actually”, replied Josh. “But any way nothing to be worried about, the girl and boy both have to be sixteen”.

“But your both sixteen”, said Grams looking at Hunter and Josh. “The only ones sixteen in Olahe I think, any who it’s just a myth nothing to be worried about”.

“How many kids have gone missing so far?”, asked Alex.

“None…why would they go missing”, asked Josh.

“Just seeing if your town is that normal”, said Alex.

Hunter and Alex looked at each other.

“I wanna go home”, said Alex.

“I don’t wanna die”, said Hunter. “I havnt made mum and dad suffer that much “.

“Its just a story guys”, said Josh.

They both looked at him.

“Where having a meeting here dude”, said Hunter.

“Don’t ever disturb us again”, said Alex.

“Sorry”, said Josh raising his hand up.

Just then the phone rang. Grams stood up and left the room. They all went back to eating their lunch.

“Hunter your mum wants to speak to you, she said she’s been trying to call your phone but its not going through”, said Grams entering the room.

Hunter rushed to the phone in the living room.

“May I help you woman?” asked Hunter.

“I may have some bad news”, said Mrs. Smith.

“Lay it on me”, said Hunter.

“The business trip is gonna take a month”, said Mrs. Smith.

“Hellen you have killed me, do you know that? My death is in your hands and that husband of yours”, said Hunter cutting the call.

She quietly went back to the table and took her seat.

“So what did she say?” asked Alex.

“Your mother said that they’ll be gone for a month”, said Hunter.

“And your calm?” asked Alex taking in the news.

“Of cos I am, why wouldn’t I be?”, she asked him.

“Cause your my psycho”, said Alex.

“Shall we finish lunch”, said Hunter.

“O Hellen broke my sister again”, said Alex.

They all finished their lunch in complete silence. Once done they cleaned up the dishes and dinning table. Alex rushed upstairs and came back with a bag, he met Hunter by the front door.

“Ready to go to the library?” he asked her.

“Yeah totally”, said Hunter opening the door.

“Why don’t you go with them”, said Grams as she and Josh walked towards them.

“No!!!”, said Hunter in a deep voice.

“That wont be necessary”, said Alex.

“I don’t mind”, said Josh.

Hunter looked at the blonde haired, blue eyed boy in front of her. She just hissed and walked out the door. On their way to the library Alex and Hunter asked Josh about Olahe.

“Look!!” shouted Alex pointing to a group of people gathered at a corner.

They all ran towards the crowd. Josh pulled a girl out of he crowd.

“Whats going on Jane?” he asked her.

“Susy was found dead in the forest, apparently she had been missing since last night”, said the girl. “The killings are starting again Josh”.

“Oh no”, said Alex.” Wait again?”

“Yeah every year its like this, dead bodies are found around this time of the year. They say its an animal attack but I don’t believe them”, said the girl.

“O guys this is Jane and Jane this is is Hunter and Alex, Mrs. Smiths grandchildren”, introduced Josh.

“Nice to meet you”, said Jane. “ I can see the resemblance from your curly hair”.

“Library”, said Hunter turning.

“Yeah lets go”, said Alex. “Bye guys”.

“I’m supposed to go with you”, said Josh stopping Hunter who had started walking she stopped and looked at him.

“Fine lets go already”, said Alex.

“Can I come too?” asked Jane.

“Why don’t we let the whole damn group come too!” exclaimed Hunter waving at the crowd and stomping off.

The four walked to the library in complete silence.

“We're here you guys can scram”, said Hunter looking at them.

“Okay I guess I'll see you around”, said Josh.

Josh and Susan watched as Hunter and Alex entered the library. They turned and started walking off when they turned a corner Jane grabbed Josh’s arm.

“Whats wrong?” Josh asked looking at her.

“I gotta find something out”, said Jane starring at the library.

‘Are you waiting for someone?” Josh asked her looking at the library too.

“Just keep quite and look”, said Jane.

Josh and Jane kept looking at the library, after some time Alex and Hunter came out and walked away.

“I knew they were hiding something”, said Jane. “They were tryna get rid of us”.

“I can see that”, said Josh.

“Come on lets follow them, I’d like to see what’s so important that they dint want us around”, said Jane starting to head the same way that Hunter and Alex were heading.

Josh just shook his head and followed her. They quietly followed the two at a safe distance, till they reached a road that led straight into the forest. Josh and Jane stopped walking and watched the two enter the forest.

“Okay what are they doing in their?” asked Jane pointed at the trees. “They do know that its one hell of a creepy place?”

“Lets just enter, they might get themselves in trouble”, said Josh entering the forest with a Jane behind him.

They quickly found Alex and Hunter again but followed at a closer distance this time.

“Come on we past this way”, said Hunter taking a turn through some trees.

“I wont ask how you know that”, said Alex following her. “Do you think we should have told Josh about Mr. Stalker and the seers?”

“No way would he have believed us”, said Hunter. “And we have more important things to do like, I don’t know, finding my phone before they find it”.

“Fine”, said Alex.

“What does he mean they saw seers?” asked Jane as they followed the two.

“I’m not sure”, said Josh. “All I did was tell them the story of the Drango maybe they think its real”.

“Poor them then, getting their hopes high for nothing”, said Jane stepping on a stick making it snap.

Hunter and Alex stopped walking when they heard the sound. Hunter picked up a stick as Alex hid behind her.

“I can hear voices”, said Hunter as she slowly took steps forward.

Hunter saw two people talking a girl and a boy both their backs turned to her. She raised the stick and struck the boy on his back, he cried in pain as he fell on the ground. The girl turned and looked at her.

“Jane”, said Alex shock in his voice. “Wait if your you then that must be..”

“Josh”, said Hunter finishing the sentence for him.

“Are you okay?” Jane asked josh as she helped him stand up.

“Wow you can hit”, said Josh.

“What are you guys doing here?” asked Alex.

“Are you sure your okay?” Jane asked Josh.

“Answer my brothers question”, said Hunter.

“Fine we were following the two of you”, said Josh looking at Hunter.

“What? Really? Josh wow”, said Hunter upset. “Why? You know what don’t answer it, now please leave”.

Hunter grabbed Alex’s hand as she walked away from Josh and Jane. They finally reached the place they saw the seers.

“Look!”, shouted Alex. “Theirs your phone”.

Hunter quickly followed his gaze and saw her phone next to the rock they hid behind. She rushed to it and picked up her phone.

“Yes”, she said looking at it. “Darn it its off”.

“Hunter!”, shouted Josh as he and Jane reached the two.

“Your still following us!” shouted Hunter as she walked towards them.

“Listen I know I did a foolish thing”, started Josh.

“Quite”, said Alex. “Someone’s coming”.

“You mean those people dressed in cloaks”, said Jane pointing at the seers.

“Back to the rock”, said Hunter heading for the rock as the others followed her.

They all knelt down and looked on.

“Who are they?”, asked Josh.

“The seers”, said Alex.

“What do you mean seers?” asked Jane.

“Master you have summoned us, again”, said a woman.

“The girl and boy?” asked the master.

“Yes I have seen them”, said Mr. Stalker. “The master will love the girl she is really beautiful”.

“And the boy?” asked the master.

“Aaaah….. Josh Miller”, said the woman. “He grew up quite a fine young man”.

“What?” asked Hunter, Josh, Jane and Alex at the same time. They turned and looked at Josh then went back to listening to the seers.

“And the lovely young girl?”asked the master.

“Hunter Smith”, said Mr. Stalker. “ Mrs. Smiths granddaughter she and her brother Alex came for the summer”.

Josh, Alex and Jane looked at Hunter who was in shock from what she heard.

“Hunter”, whispered Alex with watery eyes.

“I’m no ones sacrifice”, Hunter said. “I’m no ones freaking sacrifice!” she yelled.

Josh quickly put a hand over Hunter’s mouth.

“Who’s there?” shouted the master. “Come out”.

“No thanks”, said Jane as they crawled away.

“Theirs no one here, but, their footprints all around”, they heard someone say.

“Run!”, said Alex as they all quickly stood up.

The four quickly ran through the woods at high speed. They stopped to catch their breaths once they were out of the forest. It had already started becoming dark.

“Jane you’d better go home, I’ll make sure these two get home”, said Josh.

“I think it’s best if we meet tomorrow and talk about what we just heard”, said Jane.

“Totally”, said Alex. “We can all meet by our place”.

“Cool…. Goodnight”, said Jane as she ran down the road.

Hunter, Alex and Josh reached the house, they found Grams by doorstep.

“Where have you been?” she asked them.

“Library”, answered Alex. “I couldn’t just stop reading, I was fascinated”.

“I was with them the whole time”, said Josh smiling at her.

“Hunter your quite, usually you would have come up with a sarcastic reply”, said Grams. “Are you okay?”

“Haaa……right……that sure…..okay”, said Hunter. “I’m going to bed, I have a headache. See you tomorrow”. She entered the house.

“Okay goodnight, see you tomorrow”, said Josh walking away.

Alex waved as Josh walked away.

“Are you gonna tell me what that was about?” asked Grams as she and Alex entered the house.

“Nope”, he said smiling.
