Paislee
The moment he scooped her into his arms, calm washed over her. Could this man really be her mate? Was her mother Anne actually a werewolf? Paislee feels a twinge of sadness for Anne and her plight. How horrible to die of a broken heart. It was kind of Paislee’s parents to use Anne as her middle name. Revelling in the tingles his body provides her, she shifts so she’s sitting on his knee. He’s hugging her so tightly, and Paislee feels safe in his arms.
“This Bob, he’s an Alpha?”, Paislee asks. “He is, of the Blue Moon pack. I imagine he’ll be retiring soon, his son Rob is next in line”, Luke confirms. “Wait, didn’t Melody call you Alpha? Are you an Alpha, Luke?”, Paislee blurts. “I’m next in line, yes. My father hasn’t been willing to hand over the company and the pack to me just yet”, Luke sighs. “Why not?”, Ivy cuts in. “Because he hadn’t found his mate”, Lucy says dryly.
Paislee turns to face Luke. “Have you been waiting? For me?”, she asks, aghast. “I have”, he smiles back. Paislee wraps her arms around him and buries her face in his neck. “Ooh, haha. Careful there”, he chuckles. Paislee snaps her head up and looks at him. Their noses are almost touching, and she can feel his breath on her face. “That’s his marking spot. It’s a sensitive area”, Lucy says softly from behind her.
“I have so much to learn”, Paislee sighs. “Your wolf… she should be showing herself to you anytime now”, Luke murmurs. “Have you heard uh, any you know, voices in your head?”, Lucy asks awkwardly.
“I’m here, Paislee. Don’t be afraid”, the voice from her dreams answers. Paislee’s eyes widen and she rocks back, teetering on Luke’s knee. He still has his arms around her so he catches her and pulls her back in. “She’s talking to her now, I can see it”, he tells Lucy. Paislee nods, her eyes still wide.
“What did she say?”, Luke asks. “She said she’s here and to not be afraid”. Luke rubs his hand up and down her back, “You can talk to her, it’s alright”. “I need more wine”, Ivy says as she jumps up from her chair. “I’ll come with you”, Lucy says, getting up from her chair also.
“It’s okay, answer her”, Luke prods once they’re alone, “Maybe you could start by asking her her name?”. Paislee nods and closes her eyes.
“Um, hello?”, she asks in her mind. “Oh Paislee, I’m so glad you’re here! My name is Layla”, the voice comes back. Paislee shoots her eyes open, her mouth forming an ‘O’. “What’s her name?”, Luke smiles. “Layla”, she whispers. “Hi Layla”, Luke says as he stares into Paislee’s eyes.
“Helloooooo handsome”, Layla purrs. “Paislee, I’ve been trying to talk to you, but I kept frightening you”, Layla tells her, “So then I tried to only talk to you when you were falling asleep or just waking up”.
Paislee is silent for a moment, and Luke starts rubbing her back some more. “Those weren’t dreams?”, she asks, finally. “No”, Layla says softly. “She um, she says hello”, Paislee tells Luke shyly. Luke breaks out into a huge smile.
“We can talk more when we’re alone. I am always always with you”, Layla tells her.
“How did you know that Layla was talking to me? You said you could see it?”, Paislee asks Luke, tipping her head to the side. “Our eyes change. Yours kind of flash. I’ll show you”, Luke answers. Paislee watches as his eyes glaze over and flicker to black. “Ooooh. I’ve seen my eyes do something like that in the mirror before. Scared me half to death”, Paislee says in awe.
“I think this would have been easier to swallow for you if your parents had been able to tell you. Looks like they never got the chance”, Luke says gently.
“Uh, confession time?”, Ivy calls from the kitchen. Paislee stands and Luke gets up beside her. They make their way into the kitchen where Ivy and Lucy are seated, snacking on carrot sticks and grapes. Luke pours them each some wine and sits down, while Paislee remains standing.
“Let’s hear it”, he says. “So the other morning I looked through your file and found Lowell’s number. It was linked to your adoption, so I called him Monday morning”. “YOU WHAT?”, Paislee shouts, startling everyone. Luke immediately puts his hand on her back and she feels calmer.
“He was expecting to have sent you the parcel by the time you turned eighteen. Lee, if I hadn’t done it, you’d like, become a werewolf and check yourself into an asylum”, Ivy giggles. “She’s right, it’s better that you know what’s happening to you. Anne knew it and the Garretts knew it. They planned for this”, Lucy says, putting her hand on top of Paislee’s.
“What I don’t understand yet is why Anne chose to have humans raise you. I understand that she wanted to protect you, but it’s rare for humans to know about us. I’ve never even heard of humans raising a pup before”, Lucy says with a faraway look in her eyes.
“She probably didn’t have a lot of options. Werewolf pregnancies only last five months and by the time she knew she was pregnant, she’d have four months left to come up with a plan. She was dying and she knew it”, Luke tells them.
“Not only that, but a wolf will always be able to recognize their pup. The scent is unique to them. The father can’t be too far away”, Luke adds. “I suppose Anne didn’t want the father to find Paislee by accident”, Lucy laments.
“So, what would happen now? I mean, if this was a normal situation?”, Ivy asks curiously. “Well, we’d have already mated and we’d mark each other. It kind of seals the whole deal for Moon Goddess to know we’ve found each other”, Luke says slowly. Paislee’s eyes grow wide again and she lets out a small gasp.
Mated? Like, have s*x? What’s marking? “That guy at Ruby’s in the parking lot said he didn’t see Paislee’s mark. Is that what he meant?”, Ivy asks in an a-ha moment. “Well yeah. Every werewolf knows that Paislee is a werewolf”, Lucy answers. “Except Paislee”, Luke smiles sadly.
“So normally, she’d leave her pack immediately and move to our pack to take her rightful place by Luke’s side as his Luna”, Lucy continues to explain. “What’s a Luna?”, Ivy asks. “Kind of like the queen bee of the pack”, Lucy grins and squeezes Paislee’s hand. “I don’t even know how to be a werewolf, and I’m supposed to be the queen bee of them?”, Paislee asks incredulously.
“Try to think of Layla as your other half. She’s an animal, a wolf. In the animal kingdom, this is not unusual at all”, Luke pipes in. “Oh, her name is Layla? I can’t wait to meet her!”, Lucy exclaims.
“Tell you what, why don’t we stay here a few days instead. Lucy, can you swing it?”, Luke asks with pleading eyes. “Of course!”, Lucy beams. “I need to go to the office every day now, to show Pop I’m ready to take on his role. Being here is a lot closer anyway”, Luke adds.
“I can sleep in another room if you want”, Luke turns his attention back to Paislee.
Her mind is racing, she has so many questions. Now he’s just going to move in? Is this how it really works? What if they don’t like each other? “Oh my God, tell me I can stay too! This is awesome!”, Ivy breathes, breaking Paislee’s train of thought.
“There’s room for everyone”, Paislee sighs, “Ivy, can you help me get the rooms ready?” Ivy jumps from her seat and bounds up the stairs. “I’ll help too”, Lucy says, following her.
Paislee digs through the linen closet and finds some sheets for her parents’ bed. “You can stay in here”, she tells Ivy. Next they move to one of the spare rooms and they make up a bed for Lucy and Trevor, who will join them in the morning.
Standing in the hall, Paislee swings her head back and forth between her room and the other spare room. Sensing her dilemma, Lucy places her hand on Paislee’s shoulder. “He will honour whatever you decide, honey”, she says softly. “I think I’m uncomfortable when I’m without him. I don’t want to… you know… I just want to be close to him”, Paislee fumbles. “That will be okay, too. I promise. You have your whole lives ahead to ‘you know’”, Lucy tells her, using air quotes with her fingers, “He won’t mind”.
Paislee finds pyjamas for Ivy, Lucy and herself and they change their clothes before heading back downstairs.
Luke
Downstairs, Luke fiddles with his phone, spinning it in circles on the counter, and then switching to spinning it between his pointer finger and thumb. What a night. Looking at the time, he sees that it’s two o’clock in the morning.
He can’t help but listen to the girls as they chat upstairs. The packhouse is a lot more soundproofed than a human house, and he can hear them clearly. Paislee isn’t sure where Luke should sleep. He hears Lucy tell her that it’s okay for Luke to sleep in the same room and not have s*x. Not exactly ideal, but he’ll take it. He just wants to be near his mate, he’s waited so long to find her. He’s never going to let her go.
The girls come back downstairs and they polish off a third bottle of wine before everyone decides that it’s time for bed. Luke hesitates, waiting to see what Paislee wants. Standing, she holds out her hand to him. “Will you stay with me?”, she asks sleepily. Luke’s heart leaps with joy and Jax howls in his head. “There’s nothing in this world I’d rather do”, he tells her softly.
In her room, Paislee bites her lower lip as she tries not to watch him strip down to his boxers. “Come on”, he takes her hand and leads her to the bed. Paislee climbs in first and then Luke climbs in beside her. Her skin is like velvet against his, her scent washing over him. Wrapping his arms around her, he takes a big sniff as he buries his face in her hair.
“What do I smell like?”, she whispers. “Mmmmm”, he growls, making her giggle. “Chocolate and coffee”, he answers, nuzzling his nose deeper into her hair. Mustering up the courage, he grazes her cheek with his lips, shooting tingles throughout his body and she shivers. With the small amount of light peeking though the curtains, he can see she has a smile playing on her lips.
