Lance took out a gun from inside his suit jacket and shot at Beatrix who was still snarling in the darkness as she transformed. He shot three times and instead of falling back down, Beatrix leapt into the air and landed a couple of feet far from them.
Lance looked shocked.
Ava rolled her eyes. "Wolfsbane tranquilizers do not work on her," she said. "She must have trained with poisons."
"What now? " Lance asked as he watched the she-wolf's retreating form. "We don't want to use silver on her. We have to bring her in alive and well."
Shreds of black clothing lay on the ground close to the car that Beatrix had planned to enter, but so did Beatrix's purse. Ava snatched up the purse. She rummaged inside until she produced a key. "Hop in."
She opened the car door and got inside. Ava revved the car up and backed out of the lot after the wolf. Beatrix's pure black wolf was fast, but Ava cranked up the speed of her car to match up. Thankfully, the streets were not filled with too many cars as it was so late in the night.
It was easy to follow Beatrix...until she disappeared at an intersection.
Lance looked stumped when Ava stopped at the center. In a few seconds, Ava was turning to the left.
"How do you know she went left?" Lance asked.
Ava had heard the she-wolf's thumping feet even from such a distance. But she was not about to tell Lance that.
"Stop asking unnecessary questions and load your silver gun," Ava said. "She's close."
"Our orders are not to kill or severely injure the target," Lance said.
"We'll bring her in one piece," Ava said. "Just trust me."
Lance loaded the gun begrudgingly, annoyed that Ava was giving him orders. After all, she wasn't the leader of this team. Lance scowled. He couldn't wait to get this assignment over with.
Up ahead, the thumping of paws was audible to Lance now, and Ava increased the speed of the car. Her eyes grew weary and the car swerved slightly, but she quickly blinked and snapped out of the exhaustion that was about taking her over.
When they were just close to a running Beatrix in her wolf form, Ava turned to Lance as she drove the car.
"Shoot," Ava said.
Lance watched the gun in his hand.
"Silver could kill her-"
"-Damn, Lance. We talked about this. Shoot her!" Ava said.
In another second, Beatrix leapt over a canopy that was over the small porch of a*****e, and jumped off it. She was ahead again. Ava simmered in her anger at Lance while Lance defended himself.
"The orders from our bosses-"
"-Beatrix is no ordinary wolf. She is impervious to Wolfsbane and is quite strong. Didn't you think we needed to even the playing field? What are you, in love with her?"
"-Are you crazy?"
"Why the sentiment then?" Ava demanded.
"We are supposed to bring her in one piece-"
"-No one said we weren't going to do that. Damn! Just trust me."
Ava cranked up the speed again and was at par with Beatrix as they curved into another street. When Ava was near Beatrix, she bumped into her side with the car and the she-wolf stepped back which gave Ava enough opportunity to drive ahead and block Beatrix's path.
Ava killed the engine and came out of the car quickly, and while Beatrix rushed for her, ready to crush her to the ground with her wolf strength, Ava stepped back quickly, her eyes wide with fear as she flicked her wrist and said a spell. When she arched her hand above her, bright, white blinding light circled her hand. Beatrix fell to the ground, as the light blinded her for a few seconds.
Ava stood panting as she realized that she actually pulled that spell off. If she hadn't, she would have been in critical condition now.
In those few seconds as Beatrix struggled to gain her bearings, Ava took out the silver gun which hung limp in Lance's hand as he watched, dumbstruck. She fired a few bullets into Beatrix's wolf and the woman fell to the ground, weakened.
Lance turned from Beatrix's naked body while Ava draped her jacket over Beatrix as she pulled her inside the passenger seats of the car. Ava sat with Beatrix's unconscious body at the back seats.
When they were all inside the car, neither Ava nor Lance said anything for a long while as the car rumbled on.
"She's still okay," Ava said finally. "She only needs a doctor to remove the bullets. She'll be fine. She can take it. She has a powerful wolf "
Lance did not reply, too shocked by what he had seen Ava do.
Ava watched him from the backseat. Lance had witnessed her cast a spell. There was really no way she could wriggle out of this, except he decided of his own accord to keep her secret. But Ava highly doubted it. At this point he was probably too happy to get his competition out of the way.
Ava let out a sigh
