The challenge

BRAHAM'S POV The Council Hall hadn't changed in three centuries. Same stone walls carved from living rock. Same vaulted ceiling. Same heavy wooden table scarred by generations of pack politics. But the faces around that table had never looked at me like this before. Like I was a problem to be solved. I took my seat at the head of the table, Renan standing behind me to my right. The chamber was full…fifteen regional Alphas from territories under my jurisdiction lined one side, Elders on the other. Some from my own pack, some representing the other territories. This wasn't just my pack questioning me. This was the entire alliance. Elder Kane, the oldest from my pack, stood first. "Alpha King Gothan. Thank you for answering our summons." Summons? Not request. Not invitation. "I'm here," I said simply, keeping my voice neutral. "What's this about?" Alpha Donovan from the northern territories didn't waste time with pleasantries. "Can an Alpha King with divided loyalties effectively protect sixteen territories and over three million wolves?" Straight to the throat. No preamble. No courtesy. "My loyalties have never been divided," I said steadily. "Haven't they?" Alpha Sterling leaned forward. "Three consecutive weeks absent from pack territory. Three weeks of being in the human world, human legal drama, playing bodyguard to a woman who is not a pack member, not Luna, and by all accounts, very human." "Millie-Rose is my mate." "Your human mate," Elder Gad from one of the provinces interjected. "An Alpha King has certain responsibilities. The bloodline…" "The bloodline is secure. I have an heir." "A hybrid." Donovan spat the word like poison. "Half-human. We've all heard the rumors. The boy is... unusual." My claws scraped against the underside of the table. Vorn surged forward, demanding blood for the insult to our son. "My son," I said, each word carved from ice, "is three years old. If any of you have concerns about him, address them to me directly. Not through rumors and whispers." "That's precisely the problem," Elder Kane said, maddeningly calm. "Everything about your personal life has become a subject of whispers. The pack needs stability, certainty. Not scandal." Then Roy spoke, his voice measured and reasonable…which made it more dangerous. "Alpha King, perception matters. Strength must be visible, unquestionable." He slid a tab across the table. "This is how the human world sees you." I looked at the screen. "GOTHAN'S BURDEN: Billionaire's Private World Shattered by Partner's Family Drama." My vision went red. "Who leaked this?" Roy's expression was perfectly innocent. "I don’t know but It's out there. The human media is painting you as distracted, burdened, weakened by your association with Ms. Millie-Rose Harvey's complicated family situation." "And you think I care what human reporters write?" Roy spoke again, careful to stay deferential. "Forgive me, Alpha King, but I've been fielding questions from younger pack members. They see the human headlines about Ms. Harvey's family troubles and ask me if it's true…if you're really burdened by her drama. I tell them no, of course not, but..." He trailed off meaningfully. "The optics are concerning. For your image. Not your capability, of course." The poison was subtle. Concern wrapped in loyalty. It made my skin crawl. Alpha Sage from one of the territories, who'd been silent until now, spoke up. "King Braham has held peace between our territories for over twenty years. His strength is proven. Are we condemning him for protecting his family?" "A family that invites human scrutiny to our doorstep," Alpha Gerald added. "Today, human news screams about his mate's drama. Tomorrow, they will send journalists sniffing at our gathering places. His weakness is a beacon leading them to all of us." "My mate is not a weakness," I growled, power rolling off me in waves. Several elders and younger Alphas flinched. "Then explain this." Fab, an alpha showed another article. "Her stepsister attempted to kidnap your son. Her stepmother murdered her mother. Her father is in prison. Every week there's a new villain in her family story, a new court case, a new scandal. And you're in the center, playing protector instead of Alpha King." "I can be both." "Can you?" Donovan's eyes were hard. "The borders are barely holding. Pack morale is declining. Your human mate's drama is splashed across every outlet, making you…and by extension, all of us…look weak." Vorn was roaring now, demanding I shift and remind these fools exactly what kind of Alpha I was. "Let me make something very clear." My voice dropped into pure Alpha command that made even Donovan flinch. "I have spent more than twenty years protecting every wolf in these territories. I've negotiated treaties, prevented wars, maintained peace, and built an alliance that was unthinkable before I took power. And you're questioning me because I refuse to abandon my mate when she needs me most?" "We're questioning," Elder Kane said carefully, "whether an Alpha King can maintain the strength necessary for leadership while being emotionally compromised by a human mate's endless legal battles." "We think," Sterling said bluntly, "that you need to make a choice. The pack or her." The ultimatum hung in the air like a blade. I looked around the table. Only a few faces showed support… some were conflicted. Few supporters against this much challengers. "Is that the consensus?" I asked quietly. "That I should choose?" "It's a suggestion," a young alpha I barely recognize said, false sympathy dripping from his tone. "For the good of the pack. Perhaps it's time to consider whether your personal attachments are worth the cost to everyone else." Something in me snapped. I stood slowly, my chair scraping against stone. Every wolf in the room tensed. "Let me tell you what I consider." My voice was deadly calm, but my power filled the chamber like thunder. "I consider that not one of you would be sitting here safely if not for the treaties I negotiated. Your territories would be at war if not for the peace I've maintained. You're all so comfortable, so secure, that you've forgotten what leadership actually costs." "Alpha King…" Kane started. "I'm not finished." The command in my voice was absolute. "You want me to choose? Fine. Here's my choice. I will continue to lead. I will continue to protect these territories. And I will do it with Millie-Rose Harvey at my side as my mate and future Luna. If any of you have a problem with that, you're welcome to challenge me. Officially. Right now." Silence. "No?" I looked at each of them. "I didn't think so. But let me be perfectly clear about something else. You question my priorities? You think I'm distracted? Let me tell you what I've been handling while you sat comfortably in your territories." I leaned forward, palms flat on the table. "Victor Kane's border incursions? Handled. Gabriel doubled patrols, every threat neutralized. The rogue activity in the north? Contained. The trade dispute between Sterling and Gerald’s packs? Resolved. All of this while supporting my mate through legal battles she didn't choose but was forced to fight." My eyes swept the room. "You don't see the threats I handle before they become problems. You don't see the alliances I maintain, the enemies I keep at bay. All you see is me spending time with Millie and you think I'm weak." "We think you're stretched too thin," Donovan said, but his voice had lost its edge. "Then perhaps you should consider what happens if I stop stretching." My voice went cold. "The Silvercrest treaty collapses. The trade routes I negotiated? Gone. The rogue activity I've suppressed for over twenty years? Your problem. And when territories start warring again, remember…you demanded this." The implications settled over the room like a shroud. Alpha Sterling studied me with calculating eyes. "You speak of capability. Prove it. Next full moon gathering…be present. Fully present. Show the pack that their Alpha King can balance both worlds." It wasn't a challenge to combat. But it was a challenge nonetheless…a public test of my priorities. Roy said nothing, but I caught the slight curl of satisfaction at the corner of his mouth. This was what he'd wanted. Someone else to make the demand while he stayed clean. I held Sterling's gaze. "Fine. Next gathering, I'll be there. And when I prove you wrong, when you see that I'm stronger with her than I ever was alone, you'll remember this meeting. Remember that you doubted me." I let my power fill the chamber until several Elders shifted uncomfortably. "And maybe then, you'll think twice before summoning me again like I'm some subordinate who needs to explain himself." Elder Kane inclined his head…not submission, but acknowledgment. "That's all we ask, Alpha King. Visibility." "You'll get it," I said coldly. "On my terms. This meeting is over.” "Well," Renan said when we got outside. "You certainly made your point." I let out a harsh laugh. "Did I? Or did I just give Roy and his cohorts ammunition?" "You reminded them what they have to lose." Renan's voice was firm. "That's more than Roy or anyone else can offer. He talks about tradition and strength, but he's never held one territory in peace for twenty days." "They're scared," I said quietly. "Change scares traditionalists. And me taking a human mate is a massive change." "Then let them be scared. But they don't get to dictate your choices." "No, but they can make my life hell." I ran my hands through my hair. "Roy's already building a coalition. Another few months of this and he might have enough support to actually challenge me." "Let him try," Renan said. "You're Alpha King for a reason." My phone buzzed. A text from one of the estate guards: Ma'am made some calls. Said she's handling "the human front" and you should focus on the pack. Also said not to worry. She's got this. Something tight in my chest loosened. She was fighting for me. In her world, with her weapons. While I fought for her here. "She's handling it," I said, showing Renan the message. He smiled. "Of course she is. Millie doesn't do anything halfway." "No, she doesn't." I looked back at the Council Hall. "They want to see strength? They want proof she's not a liability? She's about to show them exactly what kind of mate their Alpha King has." "And in the meantime?" I straightened, feeling the Alpha King mantle settle back onto my shoulders. "In the meantime, I do what I've always done. I lead. I protect. I remind them exactly who the f**k I am." Because they could question me all they wanted. But I was still Alpha King. And I wasn't going anywhere.
