Chapter Nine: Dreams of Pups

2037 Words
Rheya POV The next few days to pass were slow as we readied everything for the ball again. Natalie was released from the hospital, but (much to her dismay) her arm was still in a sling. Her bruises had all disappeared, and only a few scars stayed, including the one on her face, but my hope was that they would become less noticeable over time. Amara has become more social again, joining us in training and for meals, but always wears the veil to cover her face. No matter how much we assure her we do not care, she doesn’t want us to see her face as a constant reminder of what happened. According to Max, who insisted he at least check Amara over, and Dean, she has almost healed by 50 percent and will more than likely make a full recovery. “Happy birthday old man!” I said loudly to Ben as I walked out to the training field. He smiled and gave me a big bear hug. “Thank you, sister, although I would be careful with the old man stuff. You’re older than me.” He said in a laugh. “Older than you but can definitely still whoop your butt and don’t think I won’t on your birthday.” I said as I wagged my finger at him, and he raised his hands in defeat. This caused a few of the teenagers near us to giggle. Ben gave them a look that almost immediately made them stop. It was weird, but I couldn’t be prouder of him, sometimes I forget that he’s not my goofy little brother anymore. “Alright, alright! As you all know it is time for the monthly testing. When I call your name please step forward!” Ben called out 13 names and all the teenagers nervously stepped forward one by one. “Everyone else! Start the morning run! 31 miles for my birthday!” Ben said to the others. They all groaned but still began their run. The 13 kids gathered around us in a semi-circle. “I hand you all off to Alpha Rheya, show her what I taught you and make me proud.” Ben said, and they all replied a “Yes sir!” before he joined the others. “Okay, you all turned 18 this past month, so you know what that means. Time to pick the job you feel best suits you. Today will be a test, if you pass you begin your probation week to be sure you fit, if you fail, you rejoin next month’s testing.” I said to them. Once a month (normally the 1st but for obvious reasons it was moved) we take all the kids who turned 18 out of training and allow them to pick their pack job. It can range anywhere from Warrior or to one of our companies outside the pack grounds. One by one each teen stepped forward and announced the job they would like. I had 6 warriors, 1 cook, 3 nurses, and 3 to work outside the pack. I dismissed everyone but the warriors to check in with their designated jobs. The cook goes to Sarah, Maxwell tests the nurses, and Dean helps with the outside workers. The warriors came with me. I looked over my 6 future warriors and grinned. Testing day was always the most fun. Lilith POV It had been a few days since I saw those poor souls in the dungeon and no matter what I did I couldn’t get my mind off them. “Lilith, please eat.” Thomas said as he brought me back to reality. It was dinner time, the only time I left my room, but not by choice. I angrily picked up my fork and used it to move around the food on my plate. How could I have an appetite after seeing what I saw? “My Luna, you cannot starve yourself. This little temper tantrum is growing old.” Thomas said, and I replied by rolling my eyes. In a second Thomas was standing above me and yanked my head back by my hair, forcing me to look up at him. I yelped out and everyone in the room froze. “DO NOT DISRESPECT ME!” He roared out, but I didn’t flinch like everyone else. I just stared into his anger filled eyes with a blank look. “You deserve no respect!” I screamed at him. He didn’t like my response and quickly threw me to the ground. Marcus was quickly standing close to us; it was his job to protect me and once again he was failing. “Alpha-” Marcus began but the Alpha yelled at him to shut up. “You are mine. You will respect me, and you will stay in your place little girl!” He screamed as he struck me for the second time in a week. I obviously had not learned my lesson because I spoke back with venom in my voice, “What kind of Alpha hits his mate? A poor excuse for one!” This only angered him more. He grabbed me by my hair again and drug me down the hallway. I sadly, knew where we were going. I kicked and screamed but to no avail. Brittany and Marcus were following behind, begging Thomas to stop. We finally made our way to the entrance of the dungeons. Thomas lifted me up to stand and placed his hand on my throat, stopping my breathing. “You want to behave like a brat?!” He screamed at me. I clawed at his hands, but they remained on my throat. “Open the door!” He screamed and Marcus did as he was told. Thomas turned and threw me into the small, foul smelling cell. I fell to my knees and coughed, trying to get any air in my lungs. “You will stay in there until we leave!” He yelled through the bars before he turned to walk away. I had no words, so instead I let out the highest blood curdling scream I could. Marcus and Brittany stared at me in disbelief. “Get out of here! Leave me alone! I hate all of you!” I screamed out at my only two friends. In a trance like state they turned slowly and walked out. Finally, alone, I pulled my knees to my chest and sobbed out. My throat and heart hurt, and I wasn’t sure if I could ever recover from this. I wasn’t sure if I could stay here. As I lulled off to sleep, a melodic voice hummed in the back of my mind, but I just chalked it up to my emotional state. Rheya POV I walked along the familiar forest. It was my dream forest, where I was often visited by Selene and given messages. As I walked further a small wolf pup ran up to me. I kneeled and picked her up to look her over. She was an all-white color but had grey tipped ears and grey tint on her paws, which was strange, and I assumed it was just the crazy side of my dreams going. “Not crazy dear. Hera.” I heard behind me. I turned to see Selene come up beside me and kneel as well. She patted the small pups head, who returned the gesture with a small howl. “I’ve named her this because much like the Greek goddess and much like yourself, she will be queen one day.” She paused before she continued speaking. “This is not how all your wolves start, they vary with their age depending on how many humans they’ve lived with. This little pup has only just started. I give them to you at 12, you don’t hear them, but they are like your second conscious. Over the years they mature and learn as you do. That way, when you do hear them, they are much like you.” She said happily. “Why is this pup here?” I asked her. She didn’t answer, but instead placed her forehead to the pups and closed her eyes, and after a moment she leaned back. “She wants to speak to you,” She said and then she was gone. I was confused, but she had never steered me wrong before, so I did the same as the Moon Goddess and placed my forehead to the pups. Immediately I took a backseat in my own mind and Sotiras took over. “Mommy, he’s hurting me! I’m trapped!” The small wolf yelled. I realized who this pup belonged to, my dear Nevaeh. “Who is hurting her Hera?” Sotiras asked her. “I don’t know, I’m blocked from my human. I only hear and see occasionally when I can force myself through. I saw tonight. He hit her then locked her up!” The pup screamed in such a childlike voice that it broke my heart. Sotiras just nuzzled up to the pup for comfort and I was quickly rushed back to reality. I shot up in my bed waking Leonidas up. “Devika? What happened?” He said as he reached over and cupped my face. I explained the dream to him and we both agreed we needed to talk to Gaia. Luckily, she answered my call and told me we could come over to speak. I hated to disturb them so late, but urgent matters call for urgent discussions.  For now, it was just us as we made our way over to their small cottage. I told Gaia about my dream, and her and Calypso were immediately filled with joy. “Her wolf is awaking early.” Gaia said and Leo spoke up, “But Nevaeh is only 16! That has never happened!” I agreed. “Yes, but this is a special case,” Gaia began again, “Her wolf cannot protect her the normal way by shifting, so she is reaching out to you. Selene always told you that she would have more strength than you and all your foremothers combined, add that to any trauma she is facing, and it really isn’t all that farfetched.” She finished, but before we could speak, Calypso began again. “Now you said the wolf is blocked from the human?” She asked me and I nodded, “The only way an outsider can block a human from their wolf is by an extreme form of cloaking. He basically changed her down to her DNA. The wolf cannot recognize who her human counterpart is because he’s changed her, from her smell to even her own memories.” “BUT!” Gaia called out from behind us, making us jump. “Our professor in the art of cloaking has a way to discover those cloaked!” “Yes! Over the last few years, I figured her identity would be changed so I have begun a THEORY to find those cloaked, although it has never been used,” Calypso replied giving a stern look to Gaia. “It’s worth a try, is it not?” I asked her and she huffed out. She reached out to Gaia who brought a box over, and kissed Calypso on the cheek to get back into her good graces. “Yes, but it will take time. There is a crystal that can uncover any magic. When blessed by a high priestess, it should reveal any magic. This issue is that it has been a few hundred years since it has surfaced…not many know where it might be. It could be anywhere in the world right now.” She said sadly.  “Well, whatever it takes, take anything you need to travel.” I said to her. The girls nodded and we began to plan their trip. After all was said and done, we decided there would be 5 wolves who traveled alongside the, to keep them safe. Leilani, David, Camille, Alyssa, and Mark were who we picked, and luckily, they all agreed to go. It was just a matter of time now. But we were one step closer to finding Nevaeh.
