The Demons Reign

Chapter Ten

CHAPTER TEN

   Entering the room where Rose was, he met a man who stood behind Rose with a dagger at her throat, “Rowland please” Rose lamented, “who are you?” Rowland asked scared, “I’m glad you asked Rowland” the man said as he stepped out from the shadows with Rose, “I am Lucifer” he said. 

On hearing this name, Rowland shivered as he took a step closer, “please don’t kill her, she has no part in this. You can have me” Rowland begged, “Have you? Common human, I can have you whenever I want. I’ll have you very soon” Lucifer said. Rowland assessed the devil, with his eyes, “I think you’re a little disappointed with my appearance…” Lucifer said when he noticed Rowland’s curiosity, “I chose to be in human form but that doesn’t mean my evil presence isn’t with me and I know you feel it.

 “Please don’t harm her” Rowland said still begging, “and if I do? You obviously can’t do anything” Lucifer replied with a wicked grin, “But I can” Elias said as he appeared behind Rowland, “Elias, I’m glad you joined the party”, “ Lucifer please don’t harm her” Elias said as he walked closer towards the devil, “I’m greatly disappointed in you Elias, you’ve grown soft. Reckon was right about you, you can’t be trusted” Lucifer said as he looked to Rose who was crying, “I’ll take her soul with me” he added, “Lucifer stop! We can reach an agreement” Elias said, “agreement? There can’t be any agreement here, you’ve fallen from the pack, you’re not one of us” Lucifer replied with anger in his voice as he stiffened the dagger at Rose’s throat, Rowland pleaded in tears, “Please don’t do this and I’ll do whatever you want”, “humans and their desperation, it always gets them” Lucifer said laughing, “Rowland shut up” Elias yelled at his friend who was shaking and crying bitterly.

 “Lucifer, I’ve never disappointed you till this day, I’ve done everything you’ve asked for” Elias said to the Devil, “and you failed in one aspect, maybe this will bring you back on track” the Devil said and turned to capture. Rose looked at her lover as tears rolled down their eyes, “I love you” she said as the dagger slit her throat. “Nooooo!” Elias and Rowland screamed as they both ran forward, the former towards the devil and the latter to his lover as she dropped to the ground. The two Supernatural beings vanished.

   Rowland held her in his arms as he cried loudly, “Rose, please” he lamented, kissed her head with tears flowing freely from his eyes.

  Elias fell from the sky as he landed with his back on an incinerator, “Ahh!” he groaned and tried getting up, but a foot held him down by the neck, “you try defy me” rage housed in the devil’s voice, “you try go after me?” Elias struggled with the devil’s foot for he was choking, “I can kill you Elias right now, this instant and start over afresh but I won’t” Lucifer said as he released his foot, Elias gasped for air, coughing along. The devil walked a few feet from him with his back faced to the gasping being, “You have to continue with the plan, no dulling or you’ll be eliminated” he said, turned to Elias who was on his knees now. “This is your last warning” and with this statement, he disappeared.

   An ambulance carried the dead body of Rose to the mortuary as Rowland sat at his door step in deep thoughts, “I’m sorry” Elias said as he sat down beside Rowland who didn’t reply, “I wish I can turn the hands of time back and save her” Elias said, “I’m the cause of her death, I regret ever knowing any of you” he said, “me too” Rowland answered, “I wish I never met you” he said painfully and left Elias as he entered inside.

   At the office the next day, Elias starred at the window, “I’m sorry for your loss” Aza said as he appeared in the room, “I’m the cause” Elias replied fighting back tears, “Elias you shouldn’t cry” Aza said as he walked to Elias and stood by him, both staring at the window, “you’re stronger than this Elias” Aza continued, “don’t cry for her”, “Her? She was my friend’s lover, my worker, she was beautiful, diligent and hardworking, with great poise and confidence.” Elias said and this time tears rolled down his eyes, “You shouldn’t cry” Aza repeated tapping his friend’s shoulder, “I’m in human form, so it’s normal to cry” Elias said as he reached for a handkerchief in his pocket to wipe his tears. 

“What can I do?” He asked after wiping his tears, “follow the plan” Aza replied, “I can’t” Elias said as he left the window and went towards his desk, “what do you mean you can’t?” Aza asked following suit, “Now I feel the pain the Creator feels in loosing a soul, I can’t let the destruction of mankind happen” Elias said as he sat over his desk, “you’re going to rebel against the Devil?’ Aza asked scared, “ Yes! I’m not the first one to do that, he did that with God” Elias pointed out, “He’ll kill you” Aza said worried, “and I’ll gladly die” Elias replied, “Elias think this through, you’re human now, if u die, you’ll return to hell, you’ll be tormented”

   IN HELL

Lucifer was addressing the demons, “my brethren, our brother Elias has derailed, he has grown soft and fallen for the humans, he has decided to turn his back at one of his own, he fought the beast of death, defeated it and came to challenge his lord, good thing I’m his lord and he was no fit for me. Today I’m here to say Elias is not anymore part of us, he’s our enemy as well as mankind even though he has to complete his mission, once it’s done and he returns we kill him because he is unfit to be a demon…”

 While the speech was going on, Aza walked through the crowd of aggrieved and angry demons toward the front. “We need to let him know he is nothing without us! I have doubts of him completing his assignment and the day is drawing closer. We shall wait patiently, because I have doubts he’ll do his job and therefore on that day, we demons will flood the earth, if he doesn’t, we must do it for him”, with this speech all the demons chorused, “ Yes!!” With lifting of hands. 

Aza stood where he was shaking because he knew what will happen if the gates of hell went loose…. Humanity is doomed. “I have to tell Elias” he said to himself and tended to leave. “Where are you going?” A female demon asked him stopping him from moving, “I need to do something” he answered in a shivery voice, “but the devil is not through with his speech” the female demon replied and it dawn on Aza he was stuck there till the speech was over.

 “Elias is not alone unfortunately, he has eyes and ears, an informant among us” the Devil said. The heart of Aza pounded, “he has someone he trusts, who was at his side that night and fought a higher demon”, “ where’s Aza?” The devil called out. The female demon holding Aza looked at him with fire in her eyes, “please let me go” Aza begged, all eyes began looking for Aza, all mouths called out in rage, “Aza!” “What have you done?” The female demon asked, “I have to do what friends does” Aza replied her, “why should I let the friend of a traitor go?” The demon asked and this time pulling Aza closer to her.

“Because I still need him” Aza replied. This statement touched her and she let him go with a final word, “I’ll see you soon”. Aza hide himself as he left the congregation.

   Meanwhile on earth, Elias and Rowland sat at a cafeteria sipping coffee in silence. Elias broke it, “I’m sorry “, “ you don’t have to, you tried to save her, you tried to save us” Rowland replied, “but the devil killed her, you couldn’t have done anything to stop him” Rowland continued sobbing, “it’s not your fault, don’t blame yourself” he added. “I’ll save mankind” Elias said touching his lap and giving it a little squeeze. He stood up and left Rowland who was staring at his cup of coffee.

   He walked along the road with deep thoughts as his heart boiled, “hello bro” a voice said as the figure rushed to tap him after realizing he didn’t hear it, “Elias!” Aza tapped him. “What’s it now?” Elias’ asked still walking, “there’s trouble, the entire demons are against us, you and me”, “ how’s that my business?” Elias asked, “because even if you complete the task, you’ll get killed once you come back” with this statement Elias paused and turned to Aza who has been following him behind, “Are you serious?” He asked.

 “Yes, I barely escaped, they would have killed me. They know I’m your informant and right now I can’t go back. I’m stuck here with you” Aza replied. “Then that settles it, I’m not going to end mankind” Elias said with a smile, “what!” Aza exclaimed, “Yes, and we’ll be victorious” Elias answered as he continued walking, “are you serious? Do you know what the implications are? We’ll be stuck as humans forever, we’ll be doomed with no where to go, hell would kill us, heaven won’t accept us once the earth fades away” Aza said.

“It’s okay like this, it’s best we fade into extinction” Elias replied. “Are you crazy? Elias please stop and listen to yourself, stop behaving like an i***t” Aza said angrily, “no one will remember us when we’re gone, no one can save us, we are fugitives. The Creator hates us, the Devil hates us, we’re done for” he cried, “but God will remember that we saved mankind” Elias said with a smile and left Aza who stood dumbfounded.
