Gideon pov
I stood by the tall windows, staring out into the dark, foggy estate grounds. In my hand, a glass of amber scotch sat untouched, the ice slowly melting. I was a man who built empires on strict control, cold logic, and hard rules. I had survived wars and corporate battles because I never broke my own code.
Yet tonight, every single pillar of my life had shattered into dust.
Marrying Seraphina was wrong. Even if the contract was meant as a shield, a desperate legal trick to block the board from stealing her assets and locking her away, She was my brother’s child. Technically my niece. A girl I had watched grow up. The outside world would call it sick and abusive.
I didn't care about the world. But my own conscience was a heavy weight on my chest. I had sworn to protect her, not trap her in my own forbidden desires.
And yet, here we were.
A soft knock at the heavy oak doors broke the silence. A tired-looking officiant stepped into the dimly lit study, followed by two trusted witnesses who knew never to ask questions. They kept their eyes glued to the floor.
Then, she walked in.
Seraphina wore a simple ivory dress that contrasted sharply with the dark storm in her eyes. She looked fragile, like glass ready to break, but she held her chin high with stubborn pride. The terror beneath her calm face matched the chaos raging inside my own chest.
"Let us begin," the officiant murmured, his voice nervous.
The vows were stripped of all romance, reduced to dry, legal words that felt more like a deal with the devil. When the officiant told us to join hands, I reached out and took Seraphina’s small hand in mine.
The moment our skin touched, a jolt of electricity surged up my arm.
It was hot and wild. My breath hitched. This wasn't a cold business arrangement; it burned like fire. Seraphina gasped softly, her fingers twitching as if she wanted to pull away, her wide eyes flashing up to meet mine. She felt it too. That magnetic current defying every boundary we built over the years.
Instead of letting go, I tightened my grip, needing her to know there was no turning back.
"Do you, Gideon, take this woman..." the officiant droned.
"I do," I answered. My voice was a low, gravelly rasp. It was a dark promise written in blood and law.
"And do you, Seraphina..."
"I do," she whispered, her voice trembling under the immense weight of the moment.
The officiant rushed through the final blessing, sensing the explosive tension in the room. He slammed the stamp down onto the parchment.
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the officiant swallowed hard, avoiding my eyes. "You may kiss the bride."
The study air crackled with tension as the words 'You may kiss the bride' hung between them. I dropped her hand and slid my palm around the back of her neck, thumb pressing hard into the hollow beneath her jaw. Seraphina gasped, lips parting, and I yanked her against my chest.
I crushed my mouth to hers in a fierce, possessive kiss. My tongue drove past her lips, claiming every inch of her mouth while my free hand gripped her waist and pulled her flush against me. She moaned into the kiss, fingers clawing at my suit jacket, pulling me closer instead of pushing me away.
When I finally forced myself to pull back, both of us were breathing heavily, flushed, and staring at each other like two people who had just lit a match in a room full of gas.
The officiant cleared his throat nervously, signing the registry and sliding the official document across the mahogany desk.
"It... it is done. The marriage is legally binding."
Before I could catch my breath, the sharp blare of a car horn echoed from the front gates. Twin beams of headlights cut violently through the thick fog, flashing across the study windows.
My eyes snapped from Seraphina's lips up to the window. The passion vanished instantly, replaced by the cold, sharp instincts of a predator ready for war.
"They're early," Seraphina whispered, the last bit of color draining from her face.
Heavy, aggressive footsteps pounded up the stone steps outside the manor, followed by a loud, thunderous hammering on the front door.
The corporate lawyers had arrived with a corrupt warrant, expecting to find a terrified, isolated girl they could easily control.
They had no idea what they had just walked into.
