Chapter 11: Moon ChildShe fell down the stairs.
Adam heard a clatter and a shriek from the hall, followed by silence. It was during the third period, Handwork with Lady Sun. Rachel excused herself to go to the bathroom. She was paler than usual, which DJ pointed out to Adam during breakfast, because DJ noticed such things. Faint, red circles were under her eyes. Her skin seemed translucent. She swayed for a moment when she got up from her desk, but caught herself in time; left the classroom. She closed the door softly from the outside.
The next thing the children heard was the sound of a sickly body falling down a flight of stairs.
There was blood, Adam noticed with a queasy feeling in his stomach. Then the ambulance came to carry her away. She was fourteen, but she looked like twelve.
