"Chase, maybe I shouldn't have come here. You know what, I'm off. I don't want to get in the way of anything."
Ivy's eyes were all red and glistening. Such a perfect little damsel in distress. I wanted to puke.
"You said he was drunk and got rough with you. Where are you going to go like this? Just stay here."
Chase settled her onto the couch across from me. He even poured her a glass of warm water and watched her drink it, his whole face creased with concern.
Ivy stole a glance at me and then looked away fast, her cheeks flushing pink. She opened her mouth like she wanted to say something.
"Serena is... Are you two...?"
Her voice just trailed off into nothing, and she buried her face in her hands like she was overcome with embarrassment.
That was when Chase finally turned to look at me. His brow furrowed slightly, a note of irritation in his voice.
"Why are you still like that? Put some clothes on."
Shame and disgust crashed through me at the same time. I rolled my eyes at him.
"You have to untie me first."
Chase looked like he just remembered the idiotic thing he'd done. He walked over to me and saw my wrists, the skin rubbed raw from the rope.
He frowned and untied me.
"Don't hurt yourself like this again. I don't like scars."
What a goddamn piece of trash. All he could think about was his own pleasure. I was literally injured, and the only thing on his mind was his personal fetish.
Whatever scraps of feeling I still had for him evaporated right there. That one sentence did it.
I put on my clothes and got out of bed. My body was still trembling from whatever drug he'd given me.
But my voice came out ice-cold.
"I don't give a damn what you like."
Chase registered that something was off. It finally hit him that yes, he was actually in the wrong this time. He reached for my hand, ready to soothe me.
"Ah... ow..."
Ivy let out a pained little cry from the couch. Chase dropped my hand instantly and went to her.
He crouched in front of her, all tense and worried.
"Ivy, are you okay?"
"It's nothing. My leg just hurts a little. I think I hit it when he shoved me to the floor earlier. It's fine, really."
"Let me see."
Chase lifted the hem of her skirt. The skin of her calf was perfectly smooth. Absolutely nothing there.
Ivy tried to pull her leg back, all demure. Chase looked even more concerned.
"I'm worried about you. I'm calling a doctor. If this affects your dancing later, I'll never forgive myself."
He stepped away to make the call.
Ivy stared at me the whole time. Pure provocation in her eyes.
This woman. She had known full well that Chase was in love with her, and she still married into a wealthy family without a second thought. The only problem was that the wealthy life didn't turn out so great. Rumors kept surfacing about her husband, Kevin Lance, getting violent with her.
In my dream, every time something happened to her, she called Chase. She never once respected me as his girlfriend. Constant provocations. Claiming every scrap of his attention. And Chase, that bastard, was addicted to my body while playing devoted knight to Ivy all at the same time.
But now I knew how this whole story was going to play out. Fine. She could have him.
I headed for the door, and she called after me, all fake concern.
"Serena, where are you going this late?"
"I'm not like you. I actually have boundaries. Chase is all yours."
Ivy's smug face went rigid. And Chase, standing off to the side, looked absolutely thunderous.
I didn't care what either of them did next. I walked out and shut the door behind me.
I was in a hotel near the film studios. A lot of production crews were based here. At the far end of the hallway, Miles Bennett was leaning against his door with his arms crossed, staring at nothing in particular.
Chase's rival. Same type. Same caliber. Same management company. Basically, the other actor on the verge of claiming the Best Actor title. They were under the same roof but constantly sniping at each other over roles, their fan bases locked in a blood feud.
He noticed me, and a flicker of surprise crossed his otherwise unreadable face. Something almost pleased stirred in the back of his eyes.
