"Thank you. For helping me." I sat there with the mug of hot cocoa cradled in both hands, my gaze lowered. I knew exactly how I looked right then, fragile but holding it together. "This place is really out of the way, though. My phone and my wallet, they're both still back in that room. I can't go back there. And I honestly have nowhere else to go."
In the dream, this man had feelings for me. Which was the whole reason I'd been bold enough to seek him out in the first place.
Miles settled a blanket over my shoulders. Total gentleman.
"Don't worry about it. Sleep here tonight." He smiled, gentle and warm. "What Chase pulled was beyond messed up. You didn't deserve any of it."
Right then my phone rang. It was Chase.
"Where are you?" His voice came through the line, simmering with barely contained rage.
Before I could even open my mouth, Miles took the phone from my hand and turned it off.
I stared at him, confused. He patted me on the head.
"You hate him, don't you? Then ignore him and get some sleep. Relax. You take the bed. I'll take the couch."
He stretched out on the sofa across the room without another word.
The next morning, I turned my phone back on and saw the news had exploded. Chase's secret late-night rendezvous with Ivy. The two of them spent the entire night together in his hotel room. It was everywhere.
'See? Meeting a married woman in the middle of the night would have consequences. Told you they'd come.'
The scandal sent Chase's entire PR team into a meltdown, and as his assistant, I got summoned right into the middle of it.
Inside the van, his agent, Tanya Greene, had been tearing into Chase for a solid hour.
"Out of everyone on the planet, you picked Ivy. Do you have any idea who she is? Are you trying to torch your entire career? My phone has been ringing off the hook since dawn. Every single brand partner demands answers."
"Nothing happened between us. I didn't touch her. She just slept in my room for one night." Chase was still trying to defend himself, his handsome face dark and sullen.
"I don't care what did or didn't happen. All anyone can see is the two of you alone in a hotel together the whole night. The rumors online are out of control. I've already pulled strings to kill the story, but the damage is done."
Watching him squirm like that gave me a deep, petty satisfaction.
Then his eyes cut toward me and locked onto my face.
"Why didn't you answer when I called last night? Where did you go?"
I couldn't tear into him on the clock, so I kept my explanation vague.
"I was in the way. You had Ivy there, so I left. Miles saw I had nowhere to go and let me crash in his room for the night."
"So he's the one who hung up my call?" Chase was quick. He pieced the logic together instantly.
I nodded and added quietly, "I didn't want to talk to you anyway."
"How many times do I have to tell you? There is nothing between Ivy and me."
Chase pulled me down onto his lap. I frowned and tried to stand up.
He held me in place and gave me a pointed, unhappy look.
"From now on, stop talking to Miles. Don't go anywhere near his room. Do you hear me?"
I stayed silent. He looked at my face for a moment and then turned to Tanya with an almost casual air.
"I've got the solution. We announce that Serena and I are in a relationship."
