"What?"
Tanya and I said it simultaneously, both of us staring at Chase like he had lost his mind.
"Are you insane? You're at a critical point in your career. You want to announce a relationship right now? You're trying to self-destruct."
"It's just a relationship. I'm not some idol who survives on fan traffic. I think going public is the cleanest solution here. Better than letting Ivy take all the heat."
I wanted to gag. 'Oh, I see. You don't want her to get dragged, so you'll just throw me to the wolves instead. How noble.'
Sure, he wasn't an idol actor, but the man still had girlfriend fans. The second this went public, I would be ripped to shreds online. A mere assistant dating the movie star. They would crucify me.
"Besides," he said, his eyes going all soft and tender as he looked at me, "Serena has been with me for a long time now. She deserves to be acknowledged."
He was selling it like an Oscar-winning performance.
"I don't want that." I kept my gaze down, voice slow and flat. I wanted to sink my teeth into his hand.
"Don't throw a tantrum." Chase frowned, annoyed. His other hand was already sliding under my skirt, wandering, making his displeasure known.
We were in the van. There were other people present. And he just couldn't help himself. Always ready to go, no sense of decency whatsoever.
Cold and abstinent movie star, my foot. What a joke. The man was a disgusting p*****t.
I knew he really might use me as a human shield. A full-scale online mob attack was not something I could survive. And technically, I was actually in a relationship with him. I had to defuse this.
"I'm just worried it might hurt your career. A title doesn't matter to me. You're the only thing that matters."
Chase looked genuinely moved by that. He gazed at me, eyes deep and lingering. If we had been alone, I was genuinely afraid he would have taken me right there and then.
"Serena has a point. Going public right now is a bad move."
Tanya kept pushing, and eventually, she talked him down. He agreed to keep things quiet for now. The plan was to just let it all blow over. No response. Let the story die.
The atmosphere on set was strange.
This film had Ivy as the female lead, with Chase and Miles as the dual male leads. Ivy had already taken a day off because of the late-night scandal. Word around the set was that her husband had shown up in person that morning to collect her.
I wondered if her abusive husband would let his fists do the talking.
I texted the paparazzo I'd tipped off. Told him to keep eyes on Ivy and alert me the second anything happened.
I hit Send and turned around, walking straight into someone's chest.
I looked up. Miles.
"Banana?" He held out a large banana, his expression hopeful, like a big puppy.
I was actually a little hungry. I took it.
"Hey, I wanted to run something by you. Not sure if you'd be open to it."
I glanced up and caught him staring at my lips with unmistakable heat in his eyes. I hadn't even noticed him closing the distance. He was practically face to face with me now.
"Go ahead." He nodded.
I chose my words carefully.
"I was wondering if I could come work for you. I don't want to be Chase's assistant anymore. But if you don't have an opening, then forget I said anything."
"You mean it?" His eyes lit up. I nodded. "Done. I'll handle everything."
He looked almost too excited. I took a small step back. Miles immediately closed the gap, gripping my shoulders, his gaze tipping into something slightly unhinged.
"Serena, do you have any idea how long I've been waiting for this? I'm so happy!"
I gave him a tight little smile. Of course I knew. Last night, the man had watched me from the couch the entire time I slept.
"What the hell is going on here?"
Chase's furious voice came from behind me. I whipped around and flinched involuntarily at the sight of him.
Miles squeezed my hand, his thumb pressing into my palm. Then he took two steps forward, blocking Chase's view.
"Chase, perfect timing. I've got something to discuss with you. Starting today, Serena is my assistant. You've got plenty of assistants already. Surely, you don't need... her."
He put a deliberate weight on that last word, a faint smile playing at his lips as he stared Chase down.
Chase's brow furrowed hard.
"Since when do you get to call the shots for my people? Serena, come here."
