TWELVE Where Jack and Amanda lived, in Southsea, is charming and in places picturesque, almost bijou. A tightly packed, comfortable and well off residential area of Portsmouth. A nice place to live, densely populated with nice people. It was also extraordinary, in that it was encapsulated on the south and curving to the east by a broad and expansive common that sat before the ancient fortified seafront, and to the west, it nestled in close proximity with restaurants and pubs that could become distinctly lively. It was as if the residences turned their backs on all of this and hunkered down in their comfortable, cheek by jowl, relationship, edged on the north by a railway line.
