Chapter 23: Landing The wind rose as Edgar and Lydia drove home, bringing clouds which thickened and darkened the azure sky to bruise-colored purple. By the time his VW wagon bumped through the gap in the hedge, the sun had disappeared. There would be fog on the roads within hours, he predicted. Not a good night to dine out. We can call each other if either of us hears any news. Not likely, thought Lydia. Who'd have fresher news than us? The cops? The Coast Guard? The emergency room? Edgar would no doubt call Leo with the news that Tony was off Detective Altman's suspect list. Lydia called Mudge and got voicemail. Figuring he'd been fussed over enough for one night, she left a message asking if he'd be at work tomorrow. A noise like bacon crackling woke her early from bad dreams. Rain.
