The glare from the overhead floodlights burned against my eyes, painting the mahogany library in harsh, blinding white.
I didn't flinch. I didn't step back.
I shifted my body half an inch to the left, putting myself directly between the barrel of Julian's gun and Leo's chest.
"Elena, move!" Leo growled in a low, dangerous voice behind me, his hand reaching out to pull me back behind his frame.
I gripped his wrist tightly, holding him in place.
"Shoot," I said, my voice cutting through the hum of the air conditioning with absolute, frigid calm.
Julian’s sneer faltered for a fraction of a second. The hand holding the handgun trembled slightly as he stared down at me from the balcony railing.
"Don't test me, Elena!" Julian shouted, his face flushing a hot, ugly red. "He's an intruder! My father's security detail has every legal right to neutralize a threat on private property!"
"Your father's security detail works for a firm that is fifty-one percent owned by Montgomery Holdings," I replied, taking a slow, deliberate step forward toward the base of the grand balcony staircase.
I tilted my head, looking up at the three guards standing behind Julian.
"Lower your weapons," I commanded the guards, my tone flat, sharp, and absolute. "The moment a single bullet leaves a chamber in this room, my mother's private trust automatically triggers an emergency audit on your employer. You will all be in federal custody by morning, unpaid and unrepresented."
The two guards on the left exchanged a quick, uncertain glance.
Slowly, agonizingly, their gun barrels lowered three inches toward the carpet.
"What are you doing?!" Julian screamed, spinning around to glare at his men. "I pay your salaries! Keep your weapons on them!"
"They know who actually holds the leash, Julian," I said, my leather boots making a sharp, rhythmic tapping sound as I began ascending the carpeted stairs.
Leo moved right behind me, his body coiled like a steel spring, his eyes tracking every movement of the guards on the balcony.
Julian backed away from the railing as I reached the top of the stairs.
His chest was heaving, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade as he raised the gun higher, pointing it directly at my forehead.
"Stay back!" Julian yelled, his knuckles white against the grip. "I swear to God, Elena, I'll pull the trigger!"
"No, you won't," I whispered, stopping two feet from the barrel.
I stared straight into his eyes—eyes that were wide, unfocused, and terrified.
"You're a coward, Julian," I said softly, stepping directly into his personal space until the cold metal of the gun barrel was resting against the fabric of my coat, right over my heart.
"You hide behind your father's varsity titles and your family's money. But without them, you're nothing. Pull the trigger. Prove me wrong."
Julian's breath hitched. His finger trembled against the trigger guard, but he couldn't push it.
He couldn't do it because he knew the moment I died, my father and the state would tear his entire family to shreds.
Before Julian could process his hesitation, Leo struck.
Leo’s hand slammed down onto Julian's wrist like a vise, twisting his arm upward with ruthless, mechanical precision.
CRACK!
Julian shrieked in pain as his wrist dislocated. The silver handgun flew from his grip, clattering uselessly across the wooden balcony floor.
Leo didn't stop there. He drove his elbow squarely into Julian's chest, slamming the heir backward against the heavy oak railing.
Julian collapsed onto his knees, gasping for air, clutching his broken wrist.
"The key," Leo said in a cold, low voice.
Leo reached down, ripping the heavy silver key and chain from around Julian's neck in a single, fluid motion.
Julian looked up at us from the floor, tears of pain spilling down his pale cheeks. "You're crazy... both of you... your father is going to destroy you..."
"Your father goes first," I said, looking down at him with pure disgust.
I turned toward the balcony stairs, holding out my hand.
Leo placed the silver key into my palm, his warm fingers brushing mine.
We descended back to the lower library, walking straight up to the massive biometric steel safe hidden behind the portrait.
I inserted my mother's digital override unit into the primary sensor, then slid Julian's mechanical key into the lock cylinder.
I turned the key ninety degrees to the left.
CLACK.
Heavy internal gears shifted inside the wall. The heavy steel safe door unlatched, swinging open with a soft hydraulic hiss.
Inside the velvet-lined interior rested a single, high-density black hard drive stamped with my mother's private seal: [PROJECT ARTEMIS - MASTER OVERRIDE].
My breath caught in my throat.
This was it. The complete, unedited ledger of every off-grid transaction, shell company, and illegal land acquisition Victor Montgomery and Vance Capital had executed over the last twenty years.
I reached in, my fingers closing around the cold metal drive.
"We have it," I whispered, turning to Leo.
Leo smiled, a fierce, beautiful relief lighting up his face. "Let's get this to the federal server before sunrise."
BZZZZT!
Suddenly, every screen in the library—the wall monitors, the security displays, and even my personal handheld device—turned pitch black.
A single line of stark, blood-red text began scrolling across every screen simultaneously:
[GLOBAL NETWORK SHUTDOWN INITIATED]
[LOCAL CELLULAR & SATELLITE TOWERS DISABLED]
[CITYWIDE MUNICIPAL BLACKOUT IN 3... 2... 1...]
BOOM!
A deep, rattling thud echoed from the city center miles away.
Through the massive glass library windows, the glowing neon skyline of the entire metropolitan district went instantly dark.
Every street light, high-rise tower, and cellular signal vanished, plunging the city into an impenetrable, terrifying void.
The emergency backup lights inside Vance Manor flickered once, then died completely.
Absolute, crushing blackness swallowed the room.
And then, cutting through the total dark, a harsh, synthesized voice broadcasted directly through the estate's emergency radio frequency:
"All grid access has been terminated by executive order of Montgomery Holdings. Martial protocol engaged. Containment teams are airborne."
From the dark sky above the estate, the heavy, thundering chop of military-grade helicopter blades began to roar directly overhead.
