After Tristan came by and I let out a stream of profanity directed at his name, Liam and I got ready for school. I was heavily against both of us going and having one of us staying home with Brooke in case anything else happened to her, but Liam made the point that Tristan could and would send police to take us to school.
"This is stupid," I growled as I got into Liam's car. "He shouldn't even be Alpha, he doesn't even know how to be one. One of his pack members is seriously sick and he isn't doing s**t to help them."
"I know, but he is the Alpha," Liam said. "There's nothing we can do about that. He'll be Alpha until Kelly finds her mate. Then her mate would be Alpha, and he'd have to step down."
"Like that will ever happen," I said. "She's been with so many people her mate bond is probably damaged by now, if not entirely broken."
It's common knowledge in the werewolf world that the more you sleep around with multiple people that aren't your mate, it damages the mate bond and can destroy it completely. A few people won't make a difference, as teenagers have hormones and s****l desire, but if you sleep with as many people as Kelly has, the mate bond will all but be erased. That's why werewolves don't tend to sleep with many people before they find their mate, and some wait until they find their mate.
"Do you think that's what happened between you and Tyler?" Liam asked as we slowed to a stop in front of a stoplight. "That he's slept with so many people the mate bond diminished to the point you didn't want him?"
I shrugged. "I have no idea. It takes a lot of sleeping around to do that to a mate bond, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. Although, as much as I hate to say it, I don't think he's slept with many girls. A few, yes, but with how obsessed he is with me, he obviously feels the mate bond. Or rather felt, since we did reject each other."
Liam frowned. "I wonder if Brent slept around too."
"I doubt it, since Brooke obviously felt the mate bond and is this sick from his infidelity." I sighed heavily. "I wish she didn't have to go through this, Li. She'll call if she needs us, right?"
"Absolutely," Liam assured me. "She knows we'll be there if she needs us."
A thought occurred to me. "Speaking of phones, how did you manage to call me during class the other day?"
Liam laughed. "I have my ways. One way was getting Mr. Brown invested in the story of Brad and Angelina that he let me use my phone to look up more about them. He now has a weird obsession with them."
I laughed. "Aren't you creative?"
We pulled into the parking lot of the school, and I sighed heavily. "Sure we can't ditch one more day?"
"Depends; do you want your dad to pull you by the hair into the school?"
I snorted. "I'd like to see him try. But you're right; let's go."
Liam smiled slightly, and we walked into class. I shot a death glare at Brent, who flinched slightly at the intensity of my glare. But then he continued to make out with a girl, and Liam had to hold me back from lunging at him.
"Calm yourself," he said.
"I'm gonna kill him," I growled. "I swear I'm going to."
"If you kill him, you start a war," Liam reminded me.
I growled, knowing he was right, and shot one last murderous look at Brent. My Alpha aura was radiating, causing all werewolves within the room to shrink and bow their heads in submission. I sighed and reeled in my aura, containing it so it was hidden once again. You could almost hear the collective sigh of relief as the pressure left the room.
We went through our classes, which were very boring. I didn't pay attention to any of them, I was too worried about Brooke. How was she doing without us taking care of her? She could've had a relapse with bruises, and no one was there to get anything she needed or to keep her fever under control. I decided to go check up on her at lunch, as we are allowed to leave anyway for lunch.
History came around, and that's when things went downhill for me. I was in history, which I unfortunately didn't have with Liam, and my phone began buzzing. I looked at the caller ID, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw Brooke's name pop up.
"Hayley, put that phone away!" Mr. Brown ordered.
For the first time in my life, I used my Alpha aura intentionally. I let it out full force, giving Mr. Brown a look. He immediately bowed his head in submission, and I stood up. "I'm taking this call. I will be right back."
Mr. Brown nodded, and I let my aura drop. He relaxed and cleared his throat, continuing with the lesson. I left the room and found a secluded hallway to take the call in. Not that it would matter, anyone with werewolf hearing would be able to hear the call if they were in any classroom nearby. But at least it gave the illusion of privacy.
I answered the phone quickly. "Brooke? Are you okay?"
Hayley, it hurts," Brooke sobbed.
Her voice was so broken, it physically hurt me. I fought back tears and managed to say, "It's okay, Brooke. It'll be over soon."
"It hurts so much, Hales," she sobbed. She kept sobbing, and it broke my heart. I could physically feel my heart shattering into pieces at my best friend's tears and cries of pain.
"Brooke, I'm sending you to Liam," I managed to choke out. "He'll let you know when he's on his way."
Liam would be able to leave school and get to Brooke easier than I could. He wouldn't have Tristan breathing down his neck, and I could easily use my aura to cover up his absence. One order to the school secretary, and she'd mark Liam as here for the full day.
Transferring the call to Liam so he could take care of Brooke, I allowed myself to break down. I slid down the wall onto the ground. I curled up in a ball and began sobbing. I put my head in between my knees and just let the tears come.
I cried for who knows how long, and I didn't move. I heard people pass, but they left me alone. They knew better than to confront a crying Alpha werewolf, as they tend to lash out when they're in an overly emotional state. Some have better control of it than others, but I wasn't in the mood to deal with any questions or any type of comfort from a person who wasn't Liam.
After what felt like days, I heard Liam's voice. "Hayley!"
I didn't respond. I was crying so much, and my throat was so hoarse, my voice would crack. I heard him call my name again, and then I heard his voice right next to me.
"I knew I'd find you here," he said quietly, sitting down next to me. "You always come here whenever you're upset."
I raised my head and looked at him. I nodded slightly, and he looked at me sadly. "Come here," he said.
I curled up next to him, and he put his arm next to me and pulled me even closer. I fit against his side perfectly, and I just cried. I let him hold me, since I could use the comfort.
"We need to help her, Li," I whispered so low only a werewolf could hear. "She could die."
"I did something," Liam said quietly. "After talking to Brooke, I went in search of Brent. Found him in the bathroom in the middle of having s*x with another girl. Pulled him off her and beat him up pretty badly. Don't think he'll be able to do much intercourse for a while."
I laughed slightly. "Just how badly did you hurt him?"
He shrugged. "Not as bad as I would've liked to. I just punched him in the face a bit, threw him on the ground, and broke a couple of ribs. He should be healed in a week or two, sadly."
"You're right," I said. "He deserves worse than that."
"What do we do, Hales?" Liam asked. "Tristan won't help us, and we both know Brent won't stop what he's doing. And even if Tristan did help us, Brent doesn't have to listen to his command. He isn't his Alpha."
I was quiet for a minute, then said, "I do not know."
We were both quiet, and we sat there as the bell rang and people came by. They gave us curious glances, but we ignored him. Then, I saw Tyler.
An idea burst into my head. He doesn't have to listen to our Alpha, but he cannot disobey a direct order from his Alpha. And his Alpha just so happened to be my ex-mate, who won't stop chasing after me.
Not thinking about the consequences of what I was about to do, I got up and chased after Tyler. I ignored Liam's calls of my name and weaved through the crowd. I called out Tyler's name and caught up with him at his locker.
He smirked when he saw me. "Well, if it isn't my little mate. What brings you to me this time?"
"Shut up and listen," I hissed venomously. "I'm not in the mood for your comments right now. I need a favor."
He raised an eyebrow curiously. "Which is?"
"I need you to order Brent to stop sleeping around with girls, and make sure he does not do anything even remotely s****l or romantic with anyone," I said.
"Trust me, I hate asking you for help, but what he's doing is killing Brooke, and I can't let that happen."
Tyler nodded. "I see. So, what's in it for me?"
"Me not hating your guts completely," I offered.
He shook his head. "I'm happy to help you, but only if you do something for me."
I rolled my eyes. "What do you want?"
"A date with you."
I looked at him in shock. "No way. I am not going on a date with you. Not in a million years."
"Fine, then Brent's actions aren't my problem." He went back to his locker.
I sighed. "Is there anything else you want besides that?"
"Look, do you want my help or not?"
"Yes, but I don't exactly have a choice."
"Then we're going on a date. I order Brent to stop fooling around with girls until Brooke gets better and is over him, and in exchange you go out on a date with me. Is it a deal?" He offered his hand to me.
I hesitated and glared at the ceiling. "I'm going to live to regret this, but fine. It's a deal. I'll go on a stupid date with you." I shook his hand.
Tyler grinned. "Great, it's a date! I'll pick you up at eight on Friday. Wear something nice."
"I don't do nice," I said.
"Well, you'll have to for this date." He winked at me. "See you Friday, sweetheart."
"Call me that again, and I'll kick your ass!" I yelled after him.
He laughed and disappeared into his next class.
I waited at his locker and the bell rang. The deal that I just made hit me in full force. And it wasn't very pretty.
What the hell did I just do?
