A week later, Brooke was still sick and getting worse. Her fever was higher now, and the bruises were up to her waist. Liam and I were taking turns taking care of Brooke.
But, despite us taking turns taking care of her, I've been the one staying up with her all night. So far this week, I have only got a total of two hours of sleep. Brooke got a little more sleep than I did, due to the fact she's been home for a week and a half, but she's running on four hours of sleep. We had yet to hear back from the pack doctor, so we were doing our best to figure it all out.
Today was Saturday and instead of sleeping, I was going grocery shopping for the next two weeks.
"I'll go if you want," Liam said as we walked to the door. "You should stay home and get some sleep."
"I'll be fine. It's your turn to take care of Brooke anyway," I said.
"I know, but you look like hell," Liam said.
"Thanks for that," I said sarcastically. "Good friend you are."
Liam smiled. "Sorry, but it's the truth. Let me go out, Hales."
"Li, you need to stay here to take care of Brooke. You're the only one who has remotely close to a full ten hours of sleep, and I won't be much help with only two hours of sleep. Both Brooke and I are cranky, so putting us together would lead to a b***h fit. I'll be fine. Promise."
Liam sighed. "Fine, but don't take too long. I can only last so long with Cranky Bree."
"I'll be thirty minutes tops," I told him.
"You better. I'm timing you as of now," he said.
"Well, then I better get going." I smirked and dashed out the door.
I ran down to the store using werewolf speed. It's only a mile from the house, so it doesn't take a lot of effort to carry the grocery bags. With werewolf speed and strength, it's no effort at all. I walked inside the store and froze when I saw my mom, Kelly, and Tristan.
Great, I thought. I hope it's not too late to make a run for it.
I was about to follow up on that thought when my mom called my name. "Hayley!"
F*ck.
I turned around and put on a false smile, genuine towards my mom. "Hey, mom."
"Well, look who it is," my father said coolly. "My disgrace of a daughter."
"Tristan," my mother said warningly.
"Care to tell me why you've missed five days of school this past week and a half? The same goes with your friends Brooke and Liam?" Tristan asked.
My jaw tightened. "Why Brooke and Liam have missed school is none of your business. They don't have to answer to you over their parents."
Tristan growled. "I am their Alpha! Everyone answers to me! Nobody is above me!"
"All except me," I said. "You can't order around a person with Alpha blood in their veins."
"I am your father!" he yelled. "You must obey me!"
I took a step towards him, letting the hate in my eyes blaze. "Your blood may run in my veins, but you are not my father. You never will be. You don't even deserve to be called Alpha."
"Is that a challenge?" Tristan's nostrils flared.
"Maybe it is."
"Hayley, Tristan, stop it," my mom said.
"Let them, mom," Kelly said, smirking. "I've been waiting for dad to do this to Hayley for a long long time."
"Kelly, go home," my mom ordered. "Now."
"b***h," I said as Kelly walked past, without moving my gaze from Tristan's.
"Do not talk to your sister like that!" he yelled. "She is your superior and will be your Alpha one day! You treat her with respect!"
"She may be next in line, but she will never be my Alpha. Now, I have shopping to do," I said.
I walked past him and he grabbed my arm. "Now listen here-"
"Let go of me," I said through clenched teeth.
"Not until you respect me!" Tristan hissed. "Maybe this will teach you not to disrespect me." He raised his hand.
I snapped.
My hand shot out and grabbed his hand. I twisted it around and spun behind him, forcing him to his knees. I kneed him in the groin and tossed him to the side. All that in under three seconds.
I bent down and growled in his ear, "Don't forget, there's a reason why I'm respected, and it's not because I'm the Alpha's daughter."
Too worked up to go shopping, I ran out the door. I sprinted into the woods and shifted into my wolf.
My wolf is unlike all the others. My fur is midnight black and my eyes are a bright molten gold color. I have no other color on me, not even the white tail of an Alpha. I'm rather large for a female werewolf, and my claws and teeth are sharper than most wolves. I'm faster and stronger as well. I attribute that to stamina and always training.
I sprinted deeper into the woods, and I heard Kelly's voice. My ears pricked, and then I heard Brent's.
Growling, I ran towards the sound. I made my way to a clearing and saw the reason behind Brooke's bruises and fever.
There was Brent, Brooke's ex-mate, in the middle of having s*x with Kelly.

I growled and shifted into my human form again. I stormed towards them and yanked them apart, ignoring their nakedness. The force of my throw sent her flying into a tree deep in the forest. Werewolf strength comes in handy. With any luck, I knocked her out so I didn't have to deal with her.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" I yelled.
"What are you doing?" Brent demanded. "I was in the middle of something!"
"Yeah, something that wasn't with your MATE!" I screamed. I was trembling with rage, and I paced in a circle. I ran my hand through my hair and glared at him.
"So, this is why Brooke is in pain," I growled. "Because your stupid ass is f*cking some worthless piece of s**t that isn't your mate."
"I could be doing the same thing to you, if you're up for it," Brent said, smirking as he pulled his pants back on.
I gave him a murderous look and felt my eyes glow gold. The classic warning sign of a very pissed off werewolf. "What makes you think that I'd do that? Asshole or not, you're still my best friend's mate. I would never be the person who would cause her even more pain. So say that again, and I'll castrate you, fry your little friend, and shove it down your throat. And I follow through on my threats. So, if you don't want that to happen, I strongly suggest you stop doing things with girls."
" It's not my fault that she didn't expect me to be how I am, unlike how you expected." Brent smirked. "Yeah, I saw the look on your face. You knew what I was gonna do, didn't you?"
"All you jackasses are the same," I said. "Of course I knew what you were gonna do. I just had high hopes you wouldn't hurt Brooke even more. Shame it all happened before I could stop it."
"You didn't even have a chance. You know how it is when you find your mate."
"No, I don't. Jackass number one rejected me, but I didn't feel a damn thing towards him. He's not my mate nor will he ever be my mate. Like I said, all you jackasses are the same."
"Brooke is a special case for me. Still feels the pain even after I rejected her. Claiming her was my special touch. I don't like being tied down. I did it for her. Claiming gives you females such pleasure." Brent smirked.
I lost it.
I growled and kicked him. It sent him flying back into a tree, and I sped over to him. I grabbed him by his throat and slammed him against the tree again. My eyes were practically blazing gold, and my claws had extended so they were cutting into his throat. I didn't bother to retract them.
"Give me one good reason," I growled, my voice deadly, "why I shouldn't kill you right now."
"Because it would kill Brooke," he gasped.
I debated on killing him anyway-one simple swipe of my hand could either break his neck or cut his throat-but I knew he was right. Reluctantly, I loosened my hold on his throat.
Then, he did a very, very, very, stupid thing. He tried to attack me.
I jumped back once I saw what he was trying to do, and I growled. Before I could stop myself, I shifted. I lunged at him, growling, and dug my claws into his side. Brent screamed, but it wasn't nearly enough pain he deserved. Knowing I couldn't kill him and Liam was probably getting worried about me, I turned and ran back to the house.
I shifted back into human form once I reached the door and walked in. Liam was sitting down on the chair and looked up when he saw me.
"What happened?" he asked, taking in my torn clothes. The casualty of shifting so suddenly.
"I got into a fight," I said. "How's Brooke?"
"She's fine," Liam said. "She started to feel a little more pain, but then it went away. What happened?"
"I found out why Brooke is in pain," I growled. "That jackass Brent is f*cking Kelly and tried to attack me."
"WHAT!?" Liam bellowed. He got up and started pacing. "THAT SON OF A b***h! I'M GONNA KILL THAT MUTT!"
"Liam, go," I said, seeing him about to shift. "You'll only worry Brooke more if you shift here."
"Are you okay?" Liam managed to ask calmly.
"I'm fine, I beat his ass," I said. "Now go."
Liam hesitated, but then he ran out the door. I saw him shift into his blonde wolf right as he made it into the yard. He ran off, and I walked up to Brooke.
"Hey Bree," I said. "You feeling okay?"
"Yeah, I feel fine," she said. "I heard what you said to Liam. Thanks for watching out for me."
"It's my job," I said. I sat next to her. "I would've killed him, but it could've killed you. And I won't let that happen."
"Thanks, Hales," Brooke said. "I feel better. I think I'm gonna-"
She stopped short. The color drained from her face, and her skin flared hot again.
"Brooke?" I asked worriedly.
She didn't respond.
"Brooke!" I yelled.
Again, no response.
"BROOKE!" I screamed.
She did respond, but it wasn't the way I wanted her to. She doubled over and did something that scared me to the core. She vomited a fountain of blood.
