~ Oscar's pov ~ Tonight, the moon had been full, low-dangling from the sky. Its pull like a vice against my very soul. My breathing was labored as I leaned against a tree, trying to rein in the power that surged within me, threatening to burst free. It is always on nights like this, when the full moon is out, that curse is at its worst. Its silvery light a grim memory of the beast lurking beneath my skin. "Damn it," I muttered, clenching my fists as I forced myself to relax. I had a job to do tonight, and losing control now was not an option. I was invited to Braize Hill pack to represent the Lycans of Night Walkers in the crowning ceremony of their new Alpha. Rumors had it that the daughter of the Alpha was handing her title over to her mate. What other form of true love was there going to be of not that? I had been to Braize Hill pack once, and it wasn't for a hood purpose or reason. Our friendship was a distant one, but we never hesitate to involve one another in opportunities. I was driving down the hill when the curse got triggered by the full moon. I was forced out of my car and scurried into the woods to avoid killing anyone due to loss of control. But as I leaned again the tree, I heard murmurings coming from a distance. I tried to ignore it by shutting my eyes. I needed just a few minutes. I needed to stay in control. Just a few more minutes and I'll be fine. ‘I could handle this ‘ I thought. But then, cutting through the night’s silence, I heard it—a faint cry, barely audible over the wind rustling through the trees. My eyes snapped open, the sound igniting something deep within me. I straightened, my senses sharpening as I listened intently. I heard the faint cry of a name, followed by the unmistakable sound of a struggle. My heart pounded in my chest as I turned toward the noise, instincts screaming at me to investigate. I started running, my feet moving swiftly through the underbrush, the moonlight filtering through the trees, guiding my way. I got to a clearing and found them. Two girls, one strangling the other. I lost control and morphed. I tried holding my wolf back, but he was in rage. He hurried to where they were and knocked the girl sitting on the other off. I was no longer in control of myself. So after that happened, I knew they were going to be dead before I walk out of there. That is what the curse does to me. Loosing control and killing people. But something was different this time. I stood above the motionless body, staring for a while. To my surprise, my wolf was reeled back in and I morphed to my human form. “What…how…” I breathed in shock. I sprang into action. I carried her bridal style and hurried to my car. I placed a call to my brother whom I trusted the most and informed him I would be arriving the pack soon. I sped down the road and arrived our pack in time. It was late , so only the Lycan night watchers were parading the perimeters. As soon as I drove past the gates, Matt, my brother hurried out of the house. “You sounded urgent. What's wrong?” He asked. I got down from the car, opened the back door and he carried the girl out. “Who's she?!”Matt yelled. “There's no time for questions Matt. We need to help her,” I carried her away, heading for the infirmary. We usually had a pack doctor, but after the last one was discovered to be traitor, we stopped employing outsiders. Matt now worked as the pack doctor although he wasn't so grounded in that field. He rushed in after me and assisted me in placing her on the table. He got down to work while I paced about the room. My heart was racing. My wolf was restless. Why was I feeling this way for a total stranger? I could have just let her die in the cold in the woods. Or my wolf would have just killed her. That's what kept me restless all the while. Why didn't Den, my wolf, kill her? He kills every person he comes in contact with whenever the curse is triggered. “Are you going to stand there all night? Don't you have an event to attend?” Matt pulled me out of my thoughts with his questions. I took a deep breath, cleaning the sweat off my forehead. “Do me a favor Matt,” I said. He nodded, giving me a go ahead. “Keep this between us until we know who she is. We both know what happened the last time a stranger was brought home,” I requested. Matt reached for a handshake, instead I pulled him into a hug. “Thanks, brother,” I said. I returned to my car and drove back to Braize Hill. I was going to an insult I didn't honor their invitation after accepting it in the first place. Everyone was merry. The tables were set and the celebration had begun. I made my way to the throne, where I stood for a moment before I felt a hand over my shoulder. “Here comes the Lycan's representative!” The voice jeered. I turned around and found the man with a crown sitting on his head. I forced a smile, gently taking his hands off my shoulder. “You must be the new Alpha. I'm Oscar,” I introduced, reaching for a shake. If there was one thing my father warned me about the werewolves, it was their false act of friendship. They pretend to be your friends to know your next moves. Or they get acquainted with you just to be able to know how best to kill you. I was following his advice. Five feets apart. “Jack,” he introduced. “And this is my Luna. Willow,” he added, pulling a lady by the waist. They kissed deeply, and I could tell they were drunk. “Your Luna?” I asked, scanning the room. “Then what happened to Hazel…the alphas' daughter?” I asked. I knew her name because of how many times it was mentioned in my father's battle halls. “Kill the alpha and kill his heir, Hazel” my father always said. The both burst into a pearl of laughter before the Alpha answered me. “Dead!” He bursted the words with their laughter filling the air. I was thrown off balance, trying to understand what he meant by dead. They pulled each other together and began leading me to the table for royals. My cellphone rang and I excused myself from their trail. “Matt…what's wrong?” I asked after answering the call. “Urm…brother…there's a problem,” Matt said. His voice was shaking. He began babbling words I couldn't understand. “Take a deep breath and talk to me Matt,” I cut him. There was silence for a few seconds before he responded. “She's gone”. ********
