Chapter 13: Ethan's Confession

894 Words
Ethan's hand tightened around mine. The ballroom was a whirl of swirling skirts and glittering chandeliers, but all I could see was Ethan. His eyes, usually so bright and playful, were shadowed with a seriousness I'd never seen before. "Anya," he began, his voice low and husky, "I need to tell you something." My heart skipped a beat. The air around us seemed to thicken, the music fading into a distant hum. I looked up at him, my own heart pounding in my chest. "What is it, Ethan?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. Ethan took a deep breath, his gaze unwavering. "I love you, Anya," he confessed, the words hanging in the air between us. "I've loved you for a long time, even before the forced marriage that our parents did." My breath hitched. I felt a wave of emotions wash over me – surprise, confusion, a flicker of hope. I had always felt a connection with Ethan, a spark that had been there since we were children. But I had never dared to believe it was anything more than friendship. After all, Isha was always around, trying to steal his attention with her sly smiles and suggestive glances. Just moments before, she had been draped all over him, trying to whisper something in his ear, her hand lingering a little too long on his arm. But Ethan, bless his heart, had gently pulled away, his eyes searching for me in the crowd. "Ethan..." I started, but the words caught in my throat. He squeezed my hand, his eyes pleading. "I know this is a lot to take in, but I had to tell you. I couldn't let you go without you knowing how I feel." "Ethan," I said, my voice firming, "I need to think about this." Ethan nodded, understanding in his eyes. "I understand. Just promise me you'll think about it." I hesitated, then met his gaze. "I promise." The music changed, a lively jig replacing the waltz. Ethan, his face still etched with concern, gently led me to the dance floor. As we danced, I couldn't shake the feeling that our lives were about to change forever. Isha, with her venomous intentions, was a looming threat, but so was the possibility of a love I had never dared to dream of. The ballroom lights dimmed, and a spotlight fell on Ethan and me as we danced. The crowd hushed, their eyes fixed on us. Ethan, his face illuminated by the spotlight, looked at me with an intensity that made my heart race. He leaned in, his voice a low murmur in my ear. "Anya," he whispered, "I know you need time to think, but I can't wait any longer. I have to tell you everything." My breath caught in my throat. I knew what was coming. Ethan was about to reveal the truth about Isha, about the danger she posed to him and to everyone around him. "Ethan," I said, my voice trembling, "I'm ready." Ethan smiled, a flicker of relief in his eyes. He took a deep breath and began to speak, his voice echoing through the silent ballroom. He told me everything he knew about Isha, about her manipulative ways, about the danger she posed. He told me about the night Isha had tried to poison him, about the way she had used him and manipulated him. He told me how he had always seen through her facade, how he had never been tempted by her advances. I listened, my heart pounding in my chest. I had always known that Isha was a dangerous woman, but I had never realized the extent of her evil. I felt a surge of anger and protectiveness towards Ethan. I would do anything to protect him from Isha. When Ethan finished his story, the ballroom was silent. I looked at him, my eyes filled with a mixture of anger and love. "Ethan," I said, my voice firm, "I believe you." Ethan's eyes widened in surprise. He had expected me to be angry, to be scared. But instead, I was looking at him with a fierce determination. "I'm not going to let Isha hurt you," I said. Ethan smiled, a genuine smile that lit up his face. He knew that he had found a true friend, a true love, in me. And he knew that together, we could overcome anything. The music started again, a slow, romantic melody that filled the ballroom. Ethan took my hand, his touch sending shivers down my spine. He led me to the dance floor, and as we danced, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. I knew that I was in love with Ethan, and I knew that I would do anything to protect him. We danced for what felt like hours, lost in our own world. The ballroom faded away, and all that remained was Ethan and me, our hearts beating in unison. As the music reached its climax, Ethan pulled me close, his lips brushing against my ear. "I love you, Anya," he whispered. "And I'm not going to let anyone, not even Isha, take that away from us." I looked up at him, my eyes shining with love. "I love you too, Ethan," I whispered back. Once black now's a rainbow... The "fake couple" that everyone knew is now signing off..
