A very wide and provocative smile spreads on her face the moment she sees me.
“You look like a hot mess!” She remarks in amusement as she stands at a considerable distance away from me. She knows better than to stand close. “And do you know what is even more amusing? The fact that this look suits you, you lowly omega.”
“Did you really have to go this far?”
“Is that even supposed to be a question, Rhiannon? Of course, I had to go this far to get back what belonged to me.”
“What belonged to you?” I scoff. “Is Fabien some property you think you own?”
“He was mine first! We grew up together and we always knew we would become husband and wife until you showed up from nowhere and destroyed that dream of ours!”
“It’s not my fault the Moon goddess had me mated to him!”
“You should have rejected him and disappeared from his life when I asked nicely, but no, you didn’t because of your greed. You were a low-life Omega, yet you didn’t know your place. You wanted to be his queen. You wanted to be the Luna of this pack so you went ahead and married him even though I begged you not to.”
“I married him because he is my soulmate! We are destined for one another!” I say in a frustrated tone and she vigorously shakes her head.
“No, you aren’t. I am. You were never supposed to be mated to him. He is mine. Mine alone!”
“Then go ahead and have him! It’s obvious he wants you too. You can have all of him from now on. Just leave my son out of this. Please.” I beg and she lets out a loud, hysterical laughter that fills the hallways of the dungeon.
“Don’t be silly Rhiannon. You aren’t even the main target in all this scheme. Lucien is.”
“What?”
“Lucien is Alpha Fabien’s first-born son and that makes him heir to the throne. If I were to let Lucien live, even if I end up with Fabien and have a son with him, that child would always come second, after Lucien. The prospects of him becoming the next Alpha of this pack will be very low and I don’t want that. My children with Fabien have to come first to him. The son I shall bear for him will be his heir, not yours. And for that to happen, Lucien has to die!”
“You are evil!”
“No, I’m not. I’m just a very ambitious woman who never lets anything get in the way of her success. All these years I was away, you must have thought I had given up on trying to make Fabien mine, that’s why you let your guard down. That was all part of the plan. Disappear for a few years, strategize and strike when you least expect. It worked.”
I am stunned and speechless. She hasn’t moved an inch from where she’s standing and I wish a wind strong enough could blow her closer to me so I can pick her off of her feet by the neck and yank her against this barred door until she goes limp.
She’s insane!
“I came to let you know that the day of your execution has been set. It’s tomorrow morning and you can thank me for that.”
“Tomorrow morning?” I ask, horrified.
“Yeah. Fabien wanted it to be in three days, but I managed to convince him to have it done tomorrow. No hard feelings, okay. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. You and Lucien have to die fast so that Fabien and I can officially get together soon enough. You will watch us have our happily ever after from above and I do hope that you cheer for us when that happens.”
“The Patrilineal Ritual never lies.” I ask out of nowhere and her brows rise in surprise. “How did you manage to rig it?”
“You know, sometimes you forget how much influence I have in this pack.” She chuckles. “I have to go now. See you tomorrow at the execution ground. I hope you rest in peace once you die.” With that, she swivels on her heels and starts walking away.
I lean against the wall and slide down on my back, until I reach the floor and then burst into tears.
This was a well-planned coup. There’s no way I could have won.
Fabien doesn’t come to see us for the rest of the day and all night. I only know it’s morning from the freezing cold blowing through the hallways, into our cell and the rays of sunlight peering through the window bars on the wall above.
Lucien, who cried all night and was only able to fall asleep a few hours ago, stirs on the skeleton bed and my heart breaks when he opens his eyes.
“Mummy.” He calls and I rush over to him. He refused to let me talk to or let me touch him all night. It’s such a relief to hear him ask for me.
“Yes baby.”
“When are we going back home?”
“Soon baby. Very soon.” I lie and hug him.
We are never going back home.
I’m nothing but a lowly omega in this pack. No one is going to come forward to defend us at that execution ground. I can only pray and hope that the Moon goddess comes to our rescue. And if we somehow manage to survive today, I’d rather die than take Lucien back to that god forsaken castle.
“It’s time.” A deep voice announces at the door and turn to see a dungeon guard opening our cell door with a key. As he steps inside, four other guards join him and they all start walking towards us. “It’s time to go.” The guard repeats.
Lucien curls into my arms and bursts into tears.
“Mummy, please don’t let them take me away. Please.” He whimpers in fear and I immediately carry him and rise to my feet.
“Nobody touches him. I will carry him myself!” I tell the guards in a very stern tone, but my order falls on deaf ears. One of them steps forward and aggressively rips Lucien from my hold while two others grab both my arms and start dragging me out of the cell.
Both Lucien and I scream as the guards take us out of the dungeon. Once we get outside, I am awestruck by the sight I’m met with.
The Pack subjects have lined up all the way to the execution ground which is a big field at the center of the dungeon premises and the moment they set their eyes on us, the rioting begins.
“Traitor!”
“w***e!”
“Slut!”
The insults keep pouring in as the guards parade me through the path created by the subjects and just when I think things can’t get any worse, I feel a smooth, solid thing land hard on my temple and cracks. The next thing I feel is a cold, slimy liquid trickling down my cheek.
An egg.
I just got pelted with an egg.
As I’m being dragged on, the mob shoots more of the eggs at me and I completely lose it when they start doing the same to my son.
“Mummy! They are hurting me.” Lucien cries.
“Please stop. He’s done nothing wrong. Stop hurting him. Please.” I cry out in agony and my plea falls on deaf ears. They keep shooting eggs at Lucien and the next thing they shoot at me is a stone.
The guards drag me over to where Alpha Fabien is standing and throw me to the ground before him. I look up into Fabien’s merciless eyes.
“How can you believe this crazy lie? You are my husband, my mate. We have been married for five years. Do you not know the kind of person I am?” I ask bitterly.
“Despite the fact that you were a lowly Omega, I accepted you as my mate and made you my Luna and this is how you repay me? With treachery and humiliation?”
“She’s lying.” I whisper weakly. “I didn’t cheat on you. Lucien is your son!”
He stoops down before me and now we are staring at each other face to face. My heart starts doing backflips in my chest when he holds my chin and brings my face closer to his.
“Did you really think I loved you?” He asks in a very low tone only I can hear and confusion muddles my brain. I crease my brows.
“What?”
“I have never loved you, Rhiannon. All these years, I only accepted you as my mate because I wanted to use your low-ranking Omega status to show the pack subjects that I’m a nice Alpha. You were never worthy. These five years we’ve been married have been an ordeal for me and you have no idea how happy I am that it’s finally over.” A smirk perches on his lips as he rises to his feet. I stay perfectly still, every inch of my skin taut with tension. Pressure is building in my chest, pounding louder and faster and harder. I feel like I’m going to pass out.
What did he just say?
“Take her away and get this over with already.” Fabien commands and immediately, the guards start dragging me again towards the gallows that’s a few meters ahead.
After everything I just heard him say, I am too weak to cry. Too weak to beg. Too weak to fight.
He never loved me. He was just using me to prove a point to his subjects. Five years of marriage meant nothing to him. He said it was an ordeal.
“We’re starting with the woman.” The executioner announces and the guards push me forward on the gallows and wear the hanging rope around my neck. I don’t try to fight. Instead, I close my eyes and wait for my end.
The pack members are cheering and throwing derogatory words at me. I can’t see her, but I know Layla is somewhere in that crowd, cheering and counting the seconds until I die.
“Now!” A voice commands from behind me and the next thing I hear is heavy footsteps approaching me. It’s probably the person coming to cut the rope.
“I heard that you have my son and my woman?” An authoritative voice calls out and the noise instantly dies down. My eyes flutter open and my heart skips out of my chest and runs away when I see who just spoke.
It’s him.
Alpha Alois Malin of the Supreme Crescent Pack.
The Alpha of all Alphas.
