Chapter 13: Confronting the Past

The silence in the room was suffocating. Ethan stood rigid beside her, his dark eyes locked on Jason, his fists clenched at his sides. It was clear that the sudden appearance of Sophia's ex had thrown him off guard, but it had also shaken Sophia to her core. She hadn't been prepared for this. Jason's smile was polite, but there was an undeniable of challenge in his stance, as if he knew the power he held over her. "Sophia," he said again, his voice smooth, "I just a moment of your time." Sophia glanced at Ethan, who didn't move, his gaze never leaving Jason. There was tension in the air now, and it felt as if it were vibrating between them. Sophia could feel the weight of both men's expectations, pulling her in opposite directions. I don't think there's anything to discuss," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "We ended things months ago. What's changed?" Jason's smile faltered for a brief second, but he quickly recovered. "I've been thinking a lot about us, Sophia. About everything that went wrong. And I realized I made some mistakes. I want to make things right." Sophia felt a pang in her chest at his words, but she quickly smothered it. This was the past. It was over. "Jason," she started, her voice firm, "I've moved on. I've made my peace with it. I'm not interested in revisiting what we had." Jason's gaze shifted to Ethan, and for a brief moment, there was a flicker of something in his eyes-something sharp, something calculating. "I see," he said, his tone cool. "Well, it looks like I've interrupted something. I'll just leave you to it, then." Ethan's expression hardened as Jason turned to leave, but just before he could walk out the door, he paused and glanced back at them. "You'll realize sooner or later that some things from the past are hard to escape, Sophia," he said quietly, his eyes lingering on her. "Good luck with that." With that, he was gone, leaving behind an air of unease that seemed to settle like a heavy fog. Sophia didn't speak right away, still processing the exchange. She could feel Ethan's gaze on her, burning through her skin. He didn't have to say anything; she knew what he was thinking. you okay?" Ethan's voice was soft, but there was a tinge of anger beneath it. Sophia nodded, but it was more out of habit than certainty. She wasn't sure if she was okay. Jason's words had stirred something inside her-something that she thought she had buried long ago. Ethan took a step toward her, his hand gently cupping her cheek. "You don't have to let him get to you, Sophia." "I'm not," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just... I don't know why he's here now. After everything, after how badly we ended things..." Ethan's thumb traced her jawline, his touch gentle, soothing. "It doesn't matter. What matters is what you want, and what you have now." Sophia's heart skipped a beat at his words. She had been so caught up in her past with Jason, but the truth was, she had something far more real, far more intoxicating, with Ethan. She stepped closer to him, her body drawn to his like a magnet. She didn't want to let go, didn't want to fight whatever this was anymore. She was tired of running, tired of holding back. With a soft sigh, whispered, "I want you, Ethan. Only you." Ethan's lips curved into a slow smile, but his eyes were intense, searching. "Are you sure?" Sophia nodded, her hands reaching for him, pulling him closer. "I'm sure." And just like that, everything else faded away. The past, the doubts, the fears-it all disappeared as she kissed him, her body melding with his in a way that felt so right, so perfect. Ethan's moved to her waist, pulling her tighter against him, his kisses growing more urgent as he kissed her neck, her lips, as if he were trying to erase the last traces of Jason from her mind. didn't care. She only cared about this moment, about Ethan, about them. But as the passion between them ignited, so did the realization that their relationship was far from simple. There were still many obstacles to face, many challenges that lay ahead. And the next one was closer than either of them could imagine.
