Chapter 23 A Quest?

1699 Words
“Emergency meeting tonight,” Phoenix said after we left the museum with 2 copies of each book. “We need to try and figure out what Mary wants from us.” “Why don’t we just ask her?” We had the Blood Pact. We could Mindlink images. “I have a funny feeling if she, er, rather all three, were ready to inform us, they would have by now,” Stella mused. “I’m thinking this is probably some quest.” “I think you may be right, mom,” Phoenix seconded Stella’s guess. “They rather left us to our own devices, at least for now.” We were cruising along in Stella’s convertible, my shield around the entire car so we could talk freely. Stella hasn’t known anyone with a ‘key’ that could manipulate a shield before. “This changes how I view a lot of things,” she told me. I took in the sights of the city around the packhouse as Stella drove. Nothing really had a name. Everything was generic: the packhouse, the mall, the museum. I was going to start naming things I vowed! Among the mix of human influenced buildings, wolves and moon shapes were popular accents. Most structures had a row of golden globes on the roof that was Death Moon’s version of solar panels. These globes absorbed the sunlight but also the wind. “I’m trying to figure out how the werecats fit into this,” Stella spoke out loud. “We have lots of legends, but only one, that I know of, that mentions the felines and that really only has to do with how they came to be. If memory serves, it was a fluke, but the Earthly Hunters were willing to accept them as Guardians there so they were allowed to build and create new life.” “Gen, do you know where to find Sophia?” Phoenix asked, his mind somewhere in Alpha Problem Solving Mode. “Not really—unless I could find the cabin we stopped at four years ago.” I’d been given a sedative that evening and wasn’t sure I would remember, but I did have a general idea. Josephine and I never returned to Willow Tree, but I knew it was near Denver, Colorado, and that Jack’s was somewhere between Pennsylvania and Ohio. Maybe my even more heightened senses would help. “I might be able to do that.” “I really don’t know what we should do,” he admitted. “For the first time in my life, I’m stumped, but at the same time, I’m the luckiest werewolf alive,” he finished, squeezing my hand. {~>*•**•*<~} PHOENIX ::Are you still planning to propose tonight?:: Kelli had invaded my head. ::Yes:: ::I got you:: After the girls left us, Conrad was in full blown best friend mode. “One of the perks of being your Beta,” Conrad reached for his briefcase. “Is getting to carry a man purse like this and no one bats an eye!” “Say what?” Dude was my best friend, but he could be goofy sometimes. “No lumpy boxes in my pocket! I put the ring in here,” he produced the box from his ‘man purse.’ “Kelli suggested I hide it in the centerpiece for you.” “Oh, that’s a good idea. No lumpy boxes in my pocket, either. Everything coming along ok?” “Oh yes, you know how Esther loves a party.” Esther was our kitchen manager and the best we’d had since I could remember. “I’m sure she’ll outdo herself. Make sure she gets a good seat.” “Kelli already took care of that,” Conrad grinned. Everyone was excited I’d finally found my mate. The unknown didn’t seem to matter much as long as I had her. Her absence seemed...loud, if that were an appropriate way to describe it. 10 or 11 days ago, I had no idea I could miss someone so much and she was just a couple of floors above me.
