Chapter 6 Arsenal

1282 Words
No one knew I killed most of the whores I had s*x with. Not even Conrad. They were simply missing and most had no one to miss them. I wasn’t proud of it, but the Mate Pull was exasperating. I found it difficult to concentrate on anything and often snapped on those around me. I spent a lot of time alone, cruising the villages surrounding the packhouse on my motorcycle, hoping to catch a scent others claimed I would not be able to ignore. It was almost my 22nd birthday and I wanted to curse the Moon Goddess. If I didn’t find my mate soon, I would HAVE to find someone suitable to give me an heir. Isn’t that what every werewolf romance novel says? Sadly, it’s a reality. No alpha heir means the realm is suddenly up for grabs to a younger, weaker sibling or worse, a cousin. They all fall like Rome after that. ::Hey, Alpha!:: Conrad’s mindlink pushed into my head. ::I have a name, fucktard:: Conrad ignored my crankiness::Have you ever heard of this fertility festival the humans have around Stonehenge on your birthday?:: ::You mean Beltane?:: ::Yes. We should go watch. Would be fun:: I’d always thought about going sometime, but alpha duties always took precedence. ::YES!!:: My wolf suddenly spoke for the first time in awhile. He was unhappy with our state of single hood and had been eerily quiet. ::Conrad, I’ll think about it. Shutting you back out now. Got s**t to do:: ::Where have you been?:: I asked my wolf. ::Waiting for you to go find our mate:: ::You know I look for her every day:: ::But you never leave the Death Moon Realm:: ::Do you know for a fact she’s not here??:: ::No. But we need to go to Stonehenge:: It did sound like fun, but Earth wasn’t for everybody. {~>*•**•*<~} I relaxed my head back on the natural stone bank of the hot spring. I couldn’t explain the nagging feeling I had that something was going to happen soon. Maybe I was losing my mind. At the insistence of my wolf, I agreed to go with Conrad and my brothers to the festival. Many prophecies regarding Beltane existed. One was said to have been given by The Mother of all werewolves, Lady Isabella, after she was first impregnated with a wolf’s seed by the Moon Goddess. The legend varied by realm and by creature, but the general consensus was that the Mother decreed she and her murdered wolf lover would be reborn again on Beltane. Because of the date of my birth, I had heard the story many times. I didn’t put too much faith in legends, though. If The Mother was real, she probably suffered from postpartum depression coupled with grief. Legend said The Mother and her human husband planned to commit suicide before finding the orphaned wolf pup, so depression was in the realm of possibilities. The wolf pup was said to have been named Sir Isaac by The Mother, which is what I jokingly called my wolf when he claimed not to have a name that he could recall. It wasn’t uncommon for a werewolf to not have a name, but it also wasn’t uncommon for a wolf not to give his name. Our wolf personas were believed by many to be reincarnated souls that didn’t want attention. One morning, after a hard night of drinking, my wolf had said something that caused the headache I had to pound harder. I threatened to destroy him, just like The Mother’s human husband destroyed the wolf they’d raised. My heart had fluttered awkwardly and the name stuck. My betrothed was to have been born near my fourth birthday. This thought caused another flutter, but I’d be damned if I ever let anyone know about the flutter or they might see me as weak. War had broken out before my 18th birthday and I became Alpha Phoenix, firstborn son of Alpha Khane of the powerful Death Moon Realm, during this war. We weren’t just a pack. We were an entire realm, loved by as many as we were hated. Made up of over a hundred smaller packs and growing, we were powerful, but we weren’t invincible. Mercy had to be shown very, very carefully to maintain allies and discourage attacks. Flutters over a name I’d given my wolf while hungover and thoughts of a missing shewolf, Alpha or not, would be seen as a weakness. Neither my father nor I had been able to visit earth and assess a female child of the right age. War had kept us busy. I almost wished I did not have to find a mate at all, as she would also be seen as a weakness. No matter who she was. I don’t know what my father was thinking when he betrothed me. The firstborn of an Alpha that was also a female as a wife, not necessarily a mate, would be both an asset and a pain in the ass. If she had lived, and that chance was low, and the Mate Bond had been present, that would have been an even bigger pain in the ass. A major weakness. My father did have his doubts, if I were being honest. He and The Elders had discussed the pros and cons at length. Ultimately, welcoming the Silver Moon lands into our fold decided my fate. After the pack had been destroyed, my father had been reluctant to even tell me about the betrothal. My wolf was growing more restless and distant at the same time. I was shifting to let him run more often in an attempt to appease him. Damn horndog. Lovesick over someone who might not exist.
