Human Trouble

Abaddon’s POV     With all the hustle that was going on around the packhouse, I needed to get out and run. There were so many people in and out of the house, and though it was huge, I felt suffocated by all the commotion.     “No, not there! I want those in the backyard,” I heard my mother command the florists where she wanted a huge pillar of flower decorations I could have cared less for.      My mother was the Luna of the Harvest Moon pack. She led, alongside my father, Alpha Krieger Black. The strongest of all the Alphas in the eastern Americas. Though, their time leading our pack would be ending shortly.     Two days from now, I would become our pack's new Alpha. I wasn’t nervous about the new responsibilities. I would also have to get used to the overwhelming bustle of people constantly around.     I would soon have command of over seven hundred and fifty wolves. I was ready physically; I had trained for this my entire life. Mentally and emotionally, I was a wreck.     I would be the first to take an Alpha position unmated. This meant my pack would soon have no leading lady. No Luna to care for their special needs, to attend to things more sensitive. I wasn’t that kind of man. I was tough and rough. There would be no way in hell I could do those things.     It was now well past the time for me to take over for my parents. I had wanted to wait until I found my mate.     No pack deserved to be without a Luna, but my parents insisted they were ready to retire. Now, at twenty-two, I would be taking over the position I was born for.     I snuck through the side door of the kitchen and outside. I stepped out into the garden area and took a deep breath. The air was sweet and crisp. Still warm, but the thin fall air was evident in the mountains even in early October.     “I knew you would be out here sooner or later.” The voice had me jump ten feet off the ground and my heart was pounding. Stella always seemed to know exactly how to appear from nowhere and scare the s**t out of me.     “Why do you always do that?” I asked while slightly shoving her away.     “Awe come on little brother. What else are sisters for?” she asked in the fakest innocent voice.     “Maybe to stay away and give me air. You scared me half to death,” I mumbled while rolling my eyes.     I was an alpha's son, which meant my hearing and other senses were better than any other wolf in our pack. My sister was an alpha's daughter, which meant she knew exactly how to get around those senses.     “Oh, hush. I figured you would be going for a run. I know you all too well and your dislike for multitudes of people. Besides, I wanted to join you and let my wolf stretch her legs.” She visibly stretched her arms to the sky.     Though she was older by two years, Stella was only about 5’4” and was awfully smaller than I was. My height came to a towering 6’8” and I was even taller than my father was. My sister and I couldn’t be more opposite.     Besides her height, Stella had straight reddish-blonde hair that came down to her waist. She had blue and green colored eyes, a small round nose, and thin lips. She was almost a replica of our mother when she was younger.     I, on the other hand, I had brown hair with a tint of red if the light caught it just right. Brown eyes, fuller lips, and my hair was more of a wavy, curly type. I took after our father in the way I looked.     “Fine, but if you're going to join me, try to keep up!” I hollered back to her as I took off into a sprint then began to shift into my wolf.     In wolf form, I was fast. I could keep up with a car going sixty, but if I really pushed my wolf, we could run a lot faster.     Stella on the other hand was faster. Being so tiny, she was swift on her feet. Seemly almost light with every stride. I envied how effortless she seemed to take off.     It truly was I who would need to Keep up.     As Stella caught up to me, she gave me a wolfish grin and darted past me. Her paws throwing dirt all into my face. I shook it off and pushed myself harder. I could only manage to stay a tail behind her. She was fast.     Soon we turned back to head for the packhouse. The sun had gone down, and dinner would be served. Saturday was coming upon me quickly. I only wished I had found my mate before the ceremony would happen.     Walking into the packhouse kitchen, I smelled the chicken alfredo immediately. This was one of my favorite meals. My mouth began to water. The omegas that cooked for us were amazing in the kitchen and I could not have asked for better food in my entire life.     I sat down and Stella sat across from me with her husband, and mate, Landon. They were lucky enough to have been a couple while we were still high schoolers and when they turned eighteen, they found themselves to be mates. The Moon Goddess surely blessed them. Along with three daughters of their own.    I smiled at them sadly, wishing I had what they did. The love they shared was unreal. It made me wonder, what if…. Had the Goddess really forgotten to give me a mate?     “Are you excited about your ceremony Saturday?” Darien’s voice pulled me from my personal thoughts and back to reality.     “As ready as I am expected to be.”     Darien would become the new Beta of our pack when I became Alpha. Just like me, he was born to the position as his father was my father's Beta. We grew up best friends and I wouldn’t want any other wolf as my second in command.     Like Stella, Darien had also found his mate. Though it was not out of high school.     Darien met Veronica two years after high school and they immediately were inseparable. They were also insufferable. They would make-out all the time and the sessions would get downright rated R.     “Well, I am excited,” Veronica chimed in. “And not just because of the big party after. My best friend is coming to town and I would love to invite her.”      She paused looked from me to my parents. She was looking for approval to invite an outsider.     It was my mother who spoke up, “She is the human, correct?”      Not waiting for Veronica to respond, my mother continued, “she may attend the party, but not the ceremony. Of course, be sure she doesn’t eat any werewolf food. Specifically, the drinks. There will be normal drinks out, I will be sure the bartender understands why we will serve them.”     Veronica was overjoyed by my mother’s reply. She set forth pulling out her phone to start sending a message to this Friend.     Wonderful, now there will be a human at the party. Like I needed anything else to worry about right now.     “Darien will accompany you,” my mother spoke to Veronica.     I didn’t understand why she suddenly sounded sterner. I looked from her to Veronica who didn’t seem a bit shocked.     “I understand Luna, though that is my best friend’s home, concerns for the territory are obvious.” She smiled and leaned into her mate, “and I wouldn’t pass up the chance to spend more time with you.”     Darien smiled.    “What territory?” I asked. Why would she need what sounded like protection from humans? I thought.     “Rouge,” was all my mother said. I couldn’t help but think this person who was Veronica’s best friend, sounded like trouble.     A lot of human trouble.
