Chapter Five: When the Door Opens

1125 Words
The knock came again. Slower this time. Deliberate. Like whoever stood outside wasn’t in a hurry… because they already knew how this would end. Sierra stood frozen in the middle of her apartment, her pulse hammering so hard it echoed in her ears. “I know you’re in there, Sierra.” Lyra’s voice was softer now. Almost pleasant. That made it worse. “Don’t open it,” Kaelen’s voice cut through her mind instantly, sharp and commanding. “I wasn’t planning to,” Sierra whispered back, though her eyes hadn’t left the door. Another knock. Then silence. A long, stretched silence that pressed against her nerves. “What if she breaks in?” Sierra asked, her voice tight. “She won’t,” Kaelen said. A pause. Then, quieter— “Not unless you invite her.” Sierra blinked. “What?” “She’s respecting territory… barely. As long as you don’t open that door, she can’t cross that threshold without consequences.” That didn’t make Sierra feel better. Because the tone in his voice suggested something else— Lyra wasn’t the type to care about consequences. Outside— Lyra tilted her head slightly, listening. She could hear Sierra’s heartbeat from the other side. Fast. Uneven. Fear mixed with something else. Change. Her lips curved slowly. “Interesting…” She stepped closer to the door, placing her palm flat against it. “I can smell it, you know,” she said softly. “You’re not as human as you think.” Inside, Sierra’s breath hitched. Kaelen’s voice dropped dangerously low in her mind. “Do not respond to her.” But Sierra couldn’t stay silent. Not when something about Lyra’s voice felt like it was reaching under her skin. “You don’t know anything about me,” Sierra called out, forcing strength into her voice. A quiet laugh came from the other side. “Oh, I know enough.” The air shifted. Heavier. Colder. “And I know what you are to him.” Sierra’s jaw tightened. “And what exactly is that?” A pause. Then— “A mistake.” The word hit harder than it should have. Sierra felt it—sharp and unwanted. But before she could respond— Pain surged through her again. Stronger than before. She gasped, doubling over as her fingers gripped the edge of the table. “Sierra,” Kaelen’s voice sharpened. “Stay with me.” “I’m trying—” she choked out. Her body tensed, muscles tightening in ways that felt unnatural. Her senses spiked— The sound of Lyra’s breathing outside. The faint scrape of her nails against the door. The distant hum of the city beyond. Everything was too loud. Too close. “Your control is slipping,” Kaelen said. “You need to focus.” “I don’t know how!” she snapped, her voice breaking slightly. Another wave hit. This one different. Deeper. Her nails pressed into the wood— And for a split second— They weren’t nails. They were sharper. Stronger. Claws. Sierra jerked her hand back, staring at it in shock as it returned to normal. “What was that?!” she whispered. Kaelen went silent for a second. Then— “It’s starting.” Outside— Lyra’s smile widened. “There it is…” She tapped lightly on the door again. “You feel that, don’t you?” she said. “That pull? That heat? That loss of control?” Inside, Sierra squeezed her eyes shut. “Stop talking,” she muttered. “But it won’t stop,” Lyra continued smoothly. “It’s only going to get worse." Kaelen’s voice cut in, colder now. “She’s trying to provoke you. Ignore her.” But Sierra’s breathing had already changed. Deeper. Rougher. Her body was reacting again—heat spreading through her veins, settling low and unfamiliar, mixing with the pain in a way that made her feel unsteady. Confused. “Why does it feel like this…?” she whispered. A pause. Then Kaelen answered, his voice quieter now. “Because the bond isn’t just power.” Her heart skipped. “It’s instinct.” That didn’t help. Not at all. Another knock. This time harder. “Open the door, Sierra,” Lyra said, her voice losing its softness. “Let me see what he’s chosen over his own kind.” “I didn’t choose anything!” Sierra shot back. “Exactly.” Silence. Then— “That’s what makes it insulting.” Sierra’s hands curled into fists. “I’m not afraid of you.” A lie. But she held onto it anyway. Lyra’s tone shifted again—lower, edged with something darker. “You should be.” The temperature in the room seemed to drop. And for the first time— The door handle moved. Sierra’s heart slammed. “Kaelen—” “I know.” His voice was no longer calm. It was dangerous. Focused. “She’s pushing the boundary.” The handle turned slightly— Then stopped. A quiet, frustrated breath came from the other side. Lyra stepped back. For now. But not gone. Inside, Sierra sagged slightly, her body still trembling. “I can’t do this,” she whispered. “Yes, you can.” “But I don’t even understand what’s happening to me!” “You will.” “That’s not reassuring!” A pause. Then— “I’m coming to you.” Sierra froze. “What?” “I shouldn’t,” he admitted. “But if I don’t—she will.” Her breath caught. “You said you’d stay away.” “I was wrong." The words were quiet. But final. Something in her chest tightened at that. Not fear. Something else. Something warmer. More dangerous. Outside the building— Lyra stepped into the shadows, her expression no longer amused. “Come, then,” she murmured to the night. “Break your own rules for her.” Her eyes gleamed faintly. “I want to see how far you’ll go, Alpha.” Inside— Sierra moved slowly toward the door, her body still buzzing with unfamiliar energy. “Don’t open it,” Kaelen said immediately. “I’m not,” she replied, stopping just short of it. Her hand hovered near the wood. She could still feel Lyra’s presence lingering. Like a threat waiting just out of sight. “Kaelen…” she said softly. “Yes.” “…what happens when you get here?” A pause. Longer this time. Then— “Everything changes.” Her breath slowed. Not with fear. But anticipation. Far away— Kaelen’s eyes burned gold as he moved through the forest at full speed. No hesitation. No restraint. Only one thought in his mind— Mine.
