Chapter Eleven: The Moment Before

1008 Words
The room was finally quiet. But the silence didn’t feel peaceful. It felt dangerous. Sierra sat against the edge of the couch, her breathing slower now, though the heat beneath her skin still lingered. The strange power that had surged through her earlier had calmed, but not disappeared. It was still there. Waiting. Kaelen stood a few feet away near the shattered doorway, his broad shoulders tense as he stared into the dark hallway outside the apartment. Watching. Listening. Protecting. Even from a distance, his presence filled the room completely. Sierra hated how aware she was of him. Every movement. Every breath. Every second of silence between them. “You keep doing that,” Kaelen said quietly. Her brows furrowed slightly. “Doing what?” “Watching me.” Sierra looked away for half a second before sighing softly. “I can’t help it.” The honesty in her voice surprised even her. Kaelen turned then, his golden eyes settling on her. The air shifted instantly. The bond reacted. Sierra felt it like a pull beneath her ribs, warm and heavy at the same time. Her heartbeat quickened. Again. “You should get some rest,” Kaelen said, though his voice sounded rougher than before. She let out a quiet laugh. “After tonight?” His expression didn’t change. “You need your strength.” “For what exactly?” she asked softly. “Because no one tells me anything.” A shadow crossed his face. Sierra stood slowly from the couch, her gaze never leaving his. “You keep saying I’m changing,” she continued. “You keep saying this bond is dangerous. But every time I ask what’s happening to me, you avoid it.” Kaelen’s jaw tightened slightly. “It’s complicated.” “That’s not an answer.” “No,” he admitted quietly. “It’s not.” Silence stretched between them again. But this time it felt different. Closer. More personal. Sierra moved before she could rethink it. One slow step toward him. Then another. Kaelen didn’t move away. That alone made the tension worse. The closer she got, the stronger the bond became. She could feel it pulsing between them now, alive in a way she couldn’t explain. Her breath slowed as she stopped in front of him. Too close. But still not close enough. “You said earlier that the bond reacts to distance now,” she said quietly. “Yes.” “And if we ignore it?” Kaelen’s gaze darkened slightly. “It gets stronger.” Sierra swallowed. “Then maybe avoiding it isn’t working.” For a second, neither of them spoke. The air between them felt heavy enough to break. Kaelen’s eyes lowered briefly to her lips before lifting again. That single glance made heat rush through her instantly. “You don’t understand what you’re asking for,” he said softly. “Then explain it to me.” His hand flexed slightly at his side like he was fighting the urge to touch her again. “That’s exactly what I’m trying not to do.” Sierra’s chest tightened. The bond pulsed again. Harder. Her body reacted immediately, leaning closer without permission. Kaelen inhaled sharply. “Sierra…” But she couldn’t stop now. Not when every instinct inside her was pulling her toward him. Her hand lifted slowly, resting lightly against his chest. The moment she touched him— Everything intensified. The heat. The tension. The awareness. Kaelen closed his eyes briefly like he felt it too deeply. And when his hand finally settled against her waist again, Sierra’s breath caught. The touch was firm. Careful. Restrained. But it still sent a sharp wave through her body. “You should stop me,” she whispered. Kaelen looked at her for a long moment. Then said quietly, “No.” That single word shattered whatever control remained between them. He pulled her closer. And kissed her. Sierra felt the bond ignite instantly. The kiss wasn’t gentle. It was slow at first, cautious for barely a second before the tension between them finally snapped. Her fingers curled against his shirt as she leaned into him, unable to stop herself. Kaelen’s hand tightened slightly at her waist, pulling her fully against him. Closer. The kiss deepened, stealing the air from her lungs as heat rushed through her again, stronger than before. Everything around her blurred. The room. The danger. The council. None of it mattered. Only him. Only this. A soft breath escaped her as his forehead rested briefly against hers before he kissed her again, slower this time, but somehow even more intense. The bond pulsed wildly. Her body reacted instantly. Too instantly. Sierra’s knees weakened slightly, and Kaelen caught her before she could stumble. His control slipped with the movement. She felt it. In the way his grip tightened. In the way his breathing changed. In the way the kiss became less restrained and more consuming. Like he was forgetting every reason he was supposed to stay away from her. And maybe she was too. Her hands slid up slightly, gripping his shoulders as she lost herself in the feeling of him. Warmth. Strength. Danger. The bond surged again, hotter now, almost overwhelming. Kaelen suddenly pulled back with visible effort, his breathing uneven. The distance between them hurt more than it should have. Sierra looked up at him slowly, her chest rising and falling rapidly. For a second, neither of them spoke. Then— A loud crash echoed somewhere downstairs. Both of them froze. Another crash followed immediately after. Closer this time. Kaelen’s entire expression changed in an instant. The softness disappeared. Replaced by sharp focus. Danger. Sierra’s heartbeat quickened again. “What was that?” Kaelen moved slightly in front of her without thinking, every instinct turning protective again. But his eyes— They were darker now. More alert. “That,” he said quietly, “is trouble.” Another heavy sound echoed through the building. Something was coming upstairs. Fast. And whatever it was— It wasn’t alone.
