‘Have they found us … have they picked up our scent?’ He pressed against the tree again. ‘No, it’s not us they’re after … yet. This might be our chance though. Look!’ With great care, Torben eased his head from behind the tree and gazed at the village. With spears ready, the two Lupines on sentry were starting to encircle a man running at full speed from the village, obviously hoping that his exit was clear. Echoing howls from inside Bywater made it clear that the man was being pursued.. The man himself was huge and well-built, with a distinctive bushy beard. It didn’t take Torben long to recognise him as the village blacksmith he’d sat near in the Rusty Sickle the night before. He was still wearing the heavy work apron, which must have protected him from the flames as he made his escap
