Chapter 4: Embarking on the Journey

1124 Words
Noah stood by the window, gazing out at the street below. The daylight was fading, and the streetlights flickered in the cold winter wind, casting reflections of the unrest that still churned in his heart. The ticking of the clock echoed through the empty room, the only sound accompanying him in his solitude. Tomorrow morning, he would board a flight to Paris. It was a decision he had been contemplating for a long time. Despite the lingering doubts and inner struggles that occasionally made him pause, he had ultimately set his course without hesitation. He lowered his gaze to the travel ticket and passport on the desk. This would be his first time leaving the city for so long, the first time since the death of his wife and daughter that he had truly planned to leave this empty house, to seek out a mysterious enigma. Noah knew that this journey was not merely about uncovering the truth behind Oscar Rett’s disappearance. The contents of the letter had convinced him that there was a deeper connection, one that was perhaps not just about the fate of an actor, but potentially intertwined with the tragedy of losing his own wife and daughter. He folded the letter carefully and placed it in his bag. To him now, the letter was more than just a puzzle—it was like a long-buried seed, lying dormant in his heart, waiting for the day it would finally break through the soil. Noah imagined that Oscar Rett, perhaps, had never considered that his disappearance would become a form of salvation for his soul. Yet, despite all this, a deep sense of confusion still gnawed at him. Was he truly ready to face the unknown truth? This path he was about to take could lead him to a whole new world, or it could plunge him deeper into despair. Noah knew all too well that the journey ahead would be fraught with unpredictable risks. Just then, the phone rang, interrupting his thoughts. “Noah, are you still going through with this?” It was Gil’s voice, tinged with an unmistakable worry. “I’m ready, Gil,” Noah inhaled deeply, trying to keep his voice calm. “I’m leaving first thing tomorrow.” There was a pause on the other end, followed by a heavy sigh. “Are you sure about this? Do you really think you're prepared? I know you need an escape, but this road you’re choosing is not as simple as you think. You don’t understand as much as you believe.” Noah gripped the phone tightly. “I know, there’s a lot of uncertainty, Gil. But if I don’t go, I’ll live forever in this emptiness and fear. I can’t keep going like this. I need to find the answers that belong to me, or at least, find a way to stand up again.” Gil was silent for a moment, as if considering something. “I understand you, Noah. If you've made up your mind, then go. But I hope you'll remember to stay grounded. Your emotions aren’t stable right now. Don’t let yourself fall into a blind pursuit.” “I will, Gil,” Noah answered softly, his voice full of gratitude. “Thank you for always being there for me. I’ll be careful.” After hanging up, Noah put his phone back into his pocket, his gaze once again drifting to the family photo on the desk. Deep within, the impulse and resolve were becoming stronger. Yes, he felt fear and unease, but that long-suppressed longing was finally pushing him to face it all. Perhaps, as Gil had said, the road ahead was fraught with uncertainty and danger, but Noah could no longer remain passive. He was no longer the lifeless professor, no longer the man who drowned his sorrow in alcohol and lingered in the painful shadow of the past. He needed to be reborn—if only a flicker of hope, he had to seize it. He walked to the window, staring out at the increasingly blurred cityscape. Suddenly, it dawned on him: his past loneliness hadn’t been because he had lost Erica and Kelly, but because he had never truly gone anywhere else, never truly ventured out. Life had always kept him tethered to the past, and he had long lost the drive to move forward. Now, he was finally ready to let go of everything, to step out of his cage and chase the unspeakable answer. He glanced back at the bag on the desk, a feeling of relief washing over him. Inside, it wasn’t just clothes and necessities—it held the most important thing in his life: the hope of rebirth. He reached out and opened the window. The cold air rushed in, carrying the sharp bite of the winter night. Noah inhaled deeply, savoring the long-missed freshness. He knew that this adventure would not be easy, but it was the challenge he needed. Perhaps he had never truly entered this world before, but now, the opportunity was right before him, and he had no choice but to step out. Turning around, he began to do a final check of his belongings. When everything was packed, he took off his pajamas and dressed in his travel clothes. Standing in front of the mirror, Noah studied his slightly worn face and sighed deeply. He no longer felt pity for himself, nor did he let himself wallow in the shadows of the past. He was no longer that defeated man—he was now an adventurer, a solitary soul in search of redemption. “This has to begin,” he murmured to himself, his voice firm, carrying an undeniable strength. The night deepened. He turned off the lights, walked out of the room, and headed straight for the waiting taxi. The cold wind hit him as he stepped outside, and the streets beneath the night sky seemed eerily quiet, but within Noah, a sense of peace, one he had never expected, began to swell. Perhaps, this was the answer he had been seeking—not the truth about Oscar Rett, but the courage and resolve that had long been buried within him. As the taxi made its way to the airport, Noah didn’t feel fear, but rather a clear premonition: this time, he would find his true self. Paris, with its streets, gradually filled his mind as the plane took off. This unfamiliar city might be the starting point of his rebirth, or perhaps the key to unlocking the mystery. He didn’t know what kind of difficulties awaited him, but he was ready to face them all. This road was not an easy one, but Noah had never been so certain.
