Chapter 5 – The Secret Inside the Envelope

1242 Words
Sophia remains awake long after Adrian falls asleep beside her. She quietly turns to look at him as he sleeps peacefully. She wonders how someone who looks so calm could make her heart ache so much. Her eyes slowly drift toward the bedside drawer. She remembers the second envelope hidden beneath the photographs. After making sure Adrian is deeply asleep, she carefully gets out of bed. She walks softly across the room to avoid making any noise. She gently opens the drawer. The brown envelope is exactly where she hid it. Sophia takes out the second sealed envelope. Her hands begin trembling again. She stares at the words written on the front: "Open this only if you want to know who your husband really is." She hesitates for several moments. Part of her wants to throw it away. Another part desperately wants the truth. Sophia closed her eyes and took a slow, deep breath. She knew that once she opened the envelope, there would be no turning back. Whatever was hidden inside could completely change the way she saw her husband and their marriage. Her heart prayed that everything inside was nothing more than another cruel attempt to separate them, but her trembling hands revealed how frightened she truly was. She slowly opens the envelope. Inside are several printed documents. She carefully unfolds the first page. It appears to be a copy of an old newspaper article. The headline mentions Adrian Sterling and Victoria Hale. "The article below states that everyone expected Adrian and Victoria to get married.” The newspaper also described them as the perfect couple. According to the article, they had attended countless charity events, business gatherings, and family celebrations together. Reporters had praised them as the future power couple of the business world. Reading every sentence felt like a knife twisting deeper into Sophia's heart. She had never known that Adrian and Victoria once shared such a public and admired relationship. Sophia continues reading in silence. The article states that everyone expected Adrian and Victoria to get married. Sophia feels a sharp pain in her chest. She picks up another document. It contains photographs of Adrian and Victoria attending charity events together years ago. In every photograph, they look genuinely happy. Sophia begins wondering if Adrian ever smiled at her that way. She searched her memories, trying to remember a single moment when Adrian had looked at her with that same warmth. There had been kindness on a few occasions, but never the happiness she now saw in those old photographs. She gently touched one of the pictures with her fingertips before quickly pulling her hand away, as though it had burned her. The comparison was becoming too painful to bear. Tears slowly gathered in her eyes as she spoke to herself. She wipes them away before they fall. The final document catches her attention. It contains no photographs. Instead, it is a typed letter. The anonymous writer claims Adrian was forced to marry Sophia by Chairman Edward his father. It also claims Adrian has never loved Sophia. The letter insists that Adrian is only waiting for the right moment to divorce her. Sophia's breathing becomes uneven. She refuses to believe everything written in the letter. She tells herself anonymous messages can be lies. Even so, doubt begins growing inside her heart. Sophia wanted to believe that love required trust. She reminded herself that she had married Adrian because she believed in the goodness hidden beneath his cold exterior. Yet the anonymous messages, the photographs, and Victoria's sudden return were slowly breaking the confidence she had spent three years building. She feared that if more evidence appeared, her heart would no longer be strong enough to ignore it. She quietly returns every document to the envelope. She hides everything back inside the drawer. Sophia walks onto the bedroom balcony. The night sky is filled with stars. Sophia rested both hands on the balcony railing and looked toward the quiet city lights in the distance. The peaceful night stood in sharp contrast to the storm inside her heart. She remembered how excited she had been on her wedding day, believing that every new sunrise would bring her and Adrian closer together. Instead, each passing year seemed to place a greater distance between them. She wraps her arms around herself as the cold wind blows. She silently asks herself if her marriage was built on love or obligation. Inside the bedroom, Adrian slowly opens his eyes. He notices Sophia standing alone on the balcony. For a brief moment, he watches her through the glass door. He senses that something is troubling her. He quietly walks toward the balcony. Sophia quickly wipes away her tears before turning around. Adrian asks why she is still awake. Sophia smiles weakly and says she could not sleep. Adrian asks if she is feeling unwell. Sophia replies that she is just tired. Adrian offers to call the family doctor. Sophia politely refuses. There is a long silence between them. Neither of them seemed willing to break the silence. Adrian looked as though he wanted to say something, but the words never came. Sophia also had countless questions trapped inside her heart. The distance between them was only a few steps, yet emotionally they felt farther apart than ever before. It was a silence filled with unspoken fears, unanswered questions, and hidden pain. Sophia wants to ask him about Victoria. She almost speaks. But fear stops her. Adrian notices she is acting differently. He asks if something happened while she was at his grandfather's mansion. Sophia remembers Edward's warning. She decides not to mention it. She simply says everything is fine. Adrian studies her face carefully. He feels she is hiding something. Before he can ask another question, his phone suddenly rings. It is Victoria. Sophia immediately notices her name on the phone screen. Adrian answers the call without thinking. Victoria says she has found an important company file. She asks Adrian to meet her early the next morning. Adrian agrees before ending the call. Sophia lowers her eyes in silence. Adrian tells her it is only about work. Sophia quietly nods. Although she accepted Adrian's explanation, it did little to comfort her. She knew Victoria was part of the company now, and it was reasonable for them to work together. However, after everything she had seen and heard over the past few days, every meeting between them felt like another c***k forming in her already fragile heart. She desperately wished she could trust the situation as easily as she once had. Deep inside, her confidence begins to crumble. Adrian returns to bed. Sophia remains standing on the balcony. She looks up at the moon. She silently promises herself that she will discover the truth no matter how painful it may be. Sophia took one last look at the moon before returning to the bedroom. She lay beside Adrian without making a sound. Although they shared the same bed every night, it felt as though an invisible wall now separated them. She closed her eyes, hoping sleep would give her a brief escape from the questions haunting her mind, but deep inside she knew that tomorrow would bring even greater challenges. Unknown to Sophia and Adrian, someone is secretly watching the Sterling Mansion from a parked black car across the street. The mysterious person smiles after receiving a message that reads, "Phase Two begins tomorrow.”
