Emily Thompson squeezed her eyes shut as she tried to adjust to the light streaming through the large glass window that took up about a quarter of the room’s wall. As usual, she reached for her phone to check the time, only to see numerous missed calls—twenty-five of them. “What the f**k,” she whispered, sitting up abruptly in bed. She unlocked her phone and glanced at the call log. Tony had called ten times, and Mary had called fifteen.
