Chapter 6. A Luna's Heart

Zane

"I think she did well this evening," Mom says. We were sitting down in my office after Elia's Welcome Home party. There was a glass of water on my desk for her and a small plate of cookies for me. Only mom and a few others know of my horrible sweet tooth.

"I think so too, especially the way she handled being confronted," I grin. Delilah has always been chasing after me since we were about 15. She's no one special honestly in terms of rank, but she's a childhood friend.

Mom nods and fixes her gaze on me. "She also did well with the omegas, be honest." A slight growl escapes me at the thought of that male touching her at all. "I understand you feel the need to keep her away from other unmated males, but you also have to remember that it's a Luna's responsibility to her pack to make them feel safe and welcomed. And who better to start with than those who are most often taken for granted and abused?" she reasons.

As much as River and I hated to admit it, Mom was right as usual. "I know I just... she didn't have to touch him!" I state. Mom shakes her head at me.

"Oh, you have much to learn about women in power my dear boy," she sighs. I give her a puzzled look before there's a scream coming from upstairs. Automatically my mind goes to the worst possible outcome. Something happened to Elia.

River gets us moving before I can even comprehend what the hell I heard or where it was coming from. Another scream leads us toward our room where we pick up the citrus scent of Elia and another wolf. 'NO!!' I think and burst into the room where Elia is on her knees with a pregnant woman, clutching her stomach.

"I-I think she's going into labor!" Elia shouts as she looks at me. Her white hair has a slight glow to it. I pause to stare for a second before realizing what she said.

"What happened?!" I ask.

"She came to ask me something about her pup before she fell to her knees screaming," Elia explains, looking rather calm. "She needs a doctor."

"If she's really in labor, a doctor might not make it in time," Gabe says, entering the room as well with Killian, Austin, and Daniel on his heels along with Sadie.

"Lift her to the bed," Elia instructs, standing up and wrapping her hair into a bun. She disappears into the bathroom and comes out with her hands wet. "Now-"

I put one of the woman's arms around me and Gabe gets the other and we lift her to her feet. "I-I'm sorry, Alpha," she whimpers.

"Don't be. This could've happened anywhere. You're going to be just fine. Both of you," I say softly. She nods and we take her to the bed, laying her down. Sadie comes up and props her up with pillows and gives her a light blanket over her legs.

"Alright. Kill, go get some fresh towels. Please make sure they're as fresh as they can be. Gabe, I need you to go get some warm water. I swear if it's too hot, I will throw it on you. Austin, I need some small blankets at least four. Danny-" Before Elia can finish distributing tasks, Daniel has already given her an apron and has gloves at the ready. "And that's why you're my best friend. Sadie, can you and Zane hold Reign's hands please?"

Sadie nods and goes to one side of the woman while I go to the other. "Have you done this before?" Sadie asks. Elia nods.

"Only once. I wasn't the only female warrior. She got pregnant by her mate and as a precaution stayed home. The pack doctor was out of town at the time and it was an emergency. She was having quadruplets and none of the other doctors were qualified enough. The information on what to do ran through my head and she's got 4 healthy 3-year-old boys giving her a run for her money and food," she laughed. Reign laughed a little too.

Gabe returned with the water and Elia tested it. He seemed weary of the threat she issued earlier but she just nodded. Killian came back with the towels she requested and she placed them on the bed with one going in the water. Austin had gotten the blankets which Sadie grabbed.

"Alright. You three, shoo," Elia says, pushing my ranked males out of the room. She goes over to Reign's legs and lifts the blankets, inspecting her nether regions. "You're dilated enough to start pushing. Are you ready?" Reign nods. "One, two, three, push!"

Reign screams for a solid 5 seconds at least before resting a second and breathing. Elia instructs her to do it again and eventually, out comes a baby. "Wh-what are they?" Sadie asks, seemingly excited.

"It's a baby girl," Elia announces, smiling at the woman who seemed extremely tired before screaming again. Elia wraps the baby up and gives them to Daniel who goes to work cleaning the child.

I do my best not to focus on what was happening. Sure, I may be a big bad alpha and have seen wars before, but something about a woman giving birth seems off to me. "Zane?" someone calls, but there's a ringing in my ears and everything goes black.

Hours later...

"Zane? Zane!! Wake up man," a voice shouts. I open my eyes to find Austin staring at me. "Oh good, you didn't actually die. Because that would've been a story of the century." He laughs and I sit up, looking around.

Instead of being in my bedroom, I was in a guest room on the bed. "What the hell happened?" I inquire.

"Oh. Elia delivered the omega's babies and you passed out. Funniest s**t I've heard in years," he responds, laughing harder. I fix him with a glare and he goes quiet. "Anyways. The lady had triplets. Two identical boys and a baby girl and died shortly after holding them."

I swing my legs over the bed and stand up. "And what the hell are you sitting here laughing for? What's happening with the babies?" I ask. Normally when an omega dies, their children are given to the remaining mate to raise or if there isn't one, they get sent to a nearby pack orphanage.

"Elia wishes to raise them herself. Some of the elders got wind of it somehow and showed up. She's arguing with them as we speak," Austin explains. I nod and head out of the room looking for Elia.

It wasn't long before I heard angry voices coming from my office. "I don't care what the rules say. I made a promise to her and I will raise these children," I hear Elia say firmly.

"Listen, Ms. Quinn. You're not the official Luna of this pack yet. Therefore your promise is invalid," an Elder says. After entering the room, they go quiet but I can still feel the tension. Elia looks like she's ready to kill.

"Oh good, your mate is here! Maybe you can talk some sense into this wayward woman," a different Elder says. River lets out a growl at the insult towards Elia.

The Elders take a step back from us. "What's the problem here?" I question.

"Reign came to me and asked that I take care of her baby should something happen to her. She said that she had a vision when she got pregnant of a woman with hair as white and pure as snow would save her babies," Elia starts, turning to look at me head-on.

"The children are from another pack's Beta. Fearing her kids would be taken from her and she would be killed, she ran. The Goddess herself sent her here and gave her a vision of me. I promised no harm would come to her children." She glares at the old wolves, barring her teeth. Her canines had extended past her gums.

"Then what's the problem? Would you really put children who were led here by the Moon Goddess herself in an orphanage?" I stare at them and they look a little uncomfortable.

"Well, no. But their mother was an omega. All children inherit the titles of their mother," one bravely says.

"If that's the case, then I should've been nothing more than a civilian as my mother was. But my father was a Beta and happily accepted us both. And guess what? I too am a Beta," Elia justifies.

"We're getting off track. If the children in question have Beta blood, then that should be it. No question about it. They may not be as strong as Alpha heirs, but they still will be. Elia will be their mother and I shall be the father." The room goes quiet after my announcement and Elia stares at me.

"Z-Zane?" she whispers.

"If this is what my mate wants, then who am I to stand in her way?" I smile and I can see a few tears on her face.

One of the Elders growl and point a finger at me. "You cannot do this Zane. She is not officially your mate yet until a Luna ceremony and you have mated and marked her," he scolds.

I see Elia freeze next to me. "You have been hassling me for years to find my mate. I found her and if this means she'll stay with me, then I will give in to her every whim," I throw back.

"And how do we know she won't use that against you?" another tries to reason. She scoffs and crosses her arms.

"Excuse me? I am not some gold-digging she-wolf who feels like being mated to an alpha will set me for life. I have much more dignity and respect for myself than that. I didn't need a mate 4 years ago and have done just fine," Elia says. The Elders seem shocked by this news.

"What do you mean?" She rolls her eyes.

"I found my mate 4 years ago. He rejected me on the spot. Zane is my second chance." The Elders go quiet to take this in. Before they all nod in agreement.

"Just this once will you be allowed to break the rules young lady," one says. She smiles and nods, going to give them hugs which catches them all off guard.

"But you have a week to be marked and mated to each other. Your Luna ceremony will be held then," another announces. She takes in a breath and nods as they leave out.

I move towards her and she steps away, putting her hands up, palm towards me. "Are you okay?" I ask, wanting nothing more than to hold her.

"I just... A week?" She sounds uncertain and looks at me and I can see it in her eyes.

"Would you rather we do it now?" Her entire face goes red and she shakes her head violently. "I mean marking. I know that b*****d hurt you. If you're scared that I'm going to reject you too, I'm not. I've waited way too long for you to let you go now."

Relief flashes in her eyes and she nods silently, lowering her hands. I grab her waist and gently pull her into my arms, holding her and inhaling her scent. "Then... please never let me go," she whispers.

"Not for as long as I live and breathe little Luna," I whisper back. She hugs me tight and I think I've broken down a wall around her heart.
