Chapter 2. Fateful Encounter

1813 Words
Zane POV: There was blood and wolves everywhere. I almost couldn't tell my side from theirs. About a month ago, my younger sister came up missing while on her way to a neighboring pack to visit a friend of hers. She hasn't turned up yet and I have reason to believe she's dead. She was last seen near this pack. They have something to do with it, I know it. No matter how much they want to deny it, I refuse to believe their lies. River had taken control of our body and started heading towards something, though he wouldn't tell me what or who. That's when I see a beautiful white wolf throw my gamma to the side like a sack of potatoes. 'Mate...' River growls, catching me by surprise. But I tear my eyes away as other people start attacking me. I can feel her eyes on me and I look back, the mate bond snapping in place. Gabe starts barreling towards her and she looks, alarm spreading through our bond. It was a little faint, but I could feel it as she preparesto defend herself. I've never moved so fast in my life. River growled at him and fear radiated between us. 'You will not hurt her if you value your life. She's my mate,' I tell him. He calms down and looks towards where she was and I follow his gaze to see her running away. I run after her, just knocking people down that try to slow me. 'Stand down, all of you. This is your future Luna,' I sound through the link. Many wolves look at her before bowing to me and my mate, showing respect. When she stops, I do too a few yards away and slowly walk up. My mate turns around and gets ready to pounce, growling at me. I could feel her hurt and fear. 'She's scared of us.' Yeah, I know that. My body slowly lowers to the ground and I rest my head on my front paws, submitting to her. She stops growling and looks at me, confused before waking towards me and sniffing me, then licking my snout. I lift my head and lick hers too. 'Dude, what the f**k?' Gabe asks. I block him out and shift back, my hands out towards her and then slowly running my fingers through her soft fur. She leans into my touch and I smile a little, happy with the sparks that I feel and content with finally finding her. Panic slowly taints the bond before she's going back to her people and walking away. River wants to go too, but I don't move, watching her instead. The snapping of bones tells me my side has shifted back and Gabriel runs up to me. "So that's her huh? She's a pretty good fighter," he says, smirking at me. Pride swells within my heart and I nod. "She'll be a wonderful Luna then. When are you going to fetch her? She belongs with us." "I don't know," is all I say. I strain my eyes with the most of my wolf sight to see her shift back amongst a bunch of other men who can see her naked body as well. I nearly take off when my gamma puts his arm on my chest, making me look at him. His name was Killian. "If you do that you will only scare her off and cause another fight," Killian says. Gabe nods and it's enough to settle us. We didn't want her getting hurt. We just got her and refused to let go. "C'mon, we lost buddy. But we'll find Maria." That brings me back to the current situation. My sister. "Right.. Let's regroup and heal the wounded. Did we lose anybody today?" I ask. Killian shakes his head and I smile. We may have lost this battle due to my mate being found, but finding her and maintaining our numbers was a win any day. On my walk back to camp, I find myself thinking about her. The way her eyes seem to sparkle and dance, but the hurt and fear she was feeling threw me off completely. Why would she be scared of us? Our camp wasn't very big. A few tents and a couple fire pits. The wounded were tended to and some got sent home for major injuries. Killian had to be seen as well, which shocked everyone since he was normally one of the few that escaped battle unscathed due to his quick and small nature. But not where my Luna was concerned. Which is why I picked him as my gamma. Most people want someone who can take down enemies left and right, but I preferred someone who could take down people by outmaneuvering them. Especially if he would be around to protect my mate and pups. The strength was for my Delta, who was at home managing the pack. "Is it true, Alpha? Did you really find our Luna at last?" one the warriors asks me. I just nod my head and a chorus of cheers sound throughout the entire base. My face feels slightly hot and I look away, trying my best not to show my blush. I didn't think they'd be this happy that I found her. "We're saved!!" Gabriel shouts, and more cheering. My eyebrows knit together and he just grins innocently like he doesn't know why I'm looking at him. "You have a reputation for being cold-hearted-" "So? That means less people mess with us. You should be thanking me." He rolls his eyes and I do as well before going to get dressed. I do not enjoy having my body out for all to see. I would leave that to my mate instead. Which reminded me how very happy she seemed looking over my muscles. I would have to remember to wear tighter shirts so she can see them any time she wants. "Knock knock," someone says and I lift my gaze to see my mother, which puzzled me. Though not too much. Mom was a hybrid. It was likely she teleported here if anything. She was devastated when she learned that Maria was gone. We had already lost dad a few years ago, then we lose Maria. She's been checking in on me often to make sure she doesn't lose me too. "I heard you found your mate today!" She grinned and gave me a very tight hug which only caused me to smile. I'm glad she still has reasons to be happy. "Yeah, I did. She was in battle actually. I think she might be the head warrior or someone in power," I tell her, a grin on my face. My mate was strong and people followed her without hesitation. She would make an amazing Luna and was strong enough to bear my pups. "Oh my! Then there isn't any need to train her, now is there? I can't wait to meet who the Moon Goddess has blessed my son with," mom squeals. I laugh, happy that she's so excited. It's a little infectious honestly. "Actually... I can." She grabs my head and closes her eyes. I know exactly what she was trying to do and closed mine as well. When I opened them, she was filtering out my memories using the word Mate. If I had to describe what it's like, imagine scrolling through a video site, looking for something that catches your eye or attention, but going through so fast you have just enough time to register a word or two, maybe a picture of the video. Then it stops and I'm back on the field where I saw her. She looks even more amazing a second time and I have to keep River calm as he desperately wants to go get her. A gasp leaves mom's mouth after she sees us straining to watch her shift into her human form. "What's wrong?" I assumed it was because she could now see how much of a p****rt her son was, however this was my mate. So surely there has to be some exception. "She was blessed!! Highly blessed!!" Mom manages to say. I look at her confused as she pulls away from me, her excitement has been tripled at least. "Ever hundred years or so there's a woman who is born blessed by the Moon. She has amazing gifts that build with each life. Some say it's the Moon Goddess herself being reincarnated to help us, others believe it's a direct descendent of our Goddess." 'Our Luna..... is even more amazing..' River says, grinning. I nod and look at mom. She was almost jumping up and down as I started to get an uneasy feeling in my stomach. It wasn't me and it wasn't River. The only person it could be... Our mate!! I could hear mom calling me as I bolted out of my tent and shifted, running as fast as I could towards her. Something was wrong. Eventually I felt the familiar feeling of passing over someone else's territory and I knew they would be coming for me, but I didn't stop. I refused to stop. She needed us. Wolves started to attack, but I ignored them to get to her. I could smell her, though the trail was faint. It was lavender and vanilla with a hint if orange. I had to make sure she was okay. She had to be... And I see her. A majestic white wolf comes barreling towards me at full speed. She was safe. I stopped and looked at her. Just as a dark brown wolf comes and tackles me to the ground. The air in my body leaves from the impact and the wolf that knocked me down is snarling in my face. I shift back and knock them off, trying to get to her. The bond must be pulling her as well because she runs over, shifting back as she faces her packmates. "Stand down!! All of you!!" she screams. They look at her very confused, but does as she says anyways and shifts human. I do my best to cover her, but she pushes my hands away, making me growl. I don't like the idea of so many others seeing her like this. Or any others for that matter. She looks at me and opens her mouth to say something before someone growls, making us look at the wolf who'd tackled me. "Elia, what is the meaning of this?!" the brown wolf yells at her, making River join the party as we growl at him. "Don't you dare hurt him!" she says before looking at me and searching my face . My heart does backflips and starts to soar at her perfection. I want nothing more than to kiss her with all my might. "He's my mate..."
