Chapter4-PrinceOfObedience

Kate knew she couldn’t stay out here forever. She had no other options, no place to go, no one to turn to. Slowly, reluctantly, she took a step forward, and then another, until she was standing beside the car. She met James’s gaze, and for a moment, she thought she saw something like sympathy in his eyes. But it was fleeting, gone as quickly as it appeared. With a heavy heart, she opened the door and slid into the backseat. The ride back to the house was silent, the tension in the air thick and suffocating. Kate stared out the window, watching the trees and hedges blur past, her thoughts racing. When the car pulled up in front of the mansion, she didn’t move. She wasn’t ready to face her father again, to hear the finality of his decision, but she knew she had no choice. James got out and opened the door for her. “Your father’s waiting in the study,” he said quietly. Kate nodded, though her legs felt like they were made of lead as she stepped out of the car. She walked slowly toward the house, each step heavier than the last. When she reached the door, she hesitated, her hand hovering over the handle. The door seemed so much heavier now, an almost physical barrier to the life she’d known before tonight. Finally, she took a deep breath and pushed the door open. The foyer was dimly lit, the only light coming from the study at the far end of the hall. Kate’s footsteps echoed on the marble floor as she made her way toward it, her heart pounding in her chest. She paused outside the study, her hand trembling as she reached for the doorknob. She could hear the low murmur of her parents’ voices inside, the conversation tense and clipped. Gathering what little courage she had left, Kate turned the knob and stepped inside. Her father was sitting behind his massive oak desk, his expression unreadable as he looked up at her. Her mother was seated on the leather sofa, her face pale and drawn, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The tension in the room was palpable, the air thick with unspoken words. “Katherine,” Robert said, his voice cold and authoritative. “I trust you’ve had enough time to think about your decision.” Kate swallowed hard, her mouth dry. She wanted to scream, to cry, to beg them to reconsider, but she knew it would be useless. Her father had made up his mind, and there was no changing it. “I’ll do it,” she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’ll marry him.” Her father nodded, a look of satisfaction crossing his face. “Good. You’ve made the right choice.” Kate’s eyes flickered to her mother, hoping for some sign of empathy, some hint that she wasn’t alone in this. But Grace’s expression was blank, her eyes distant, as if she had already accepted that this was how things were meant to be. “The arrangements will be made immediately,” Robert continued, his tone brisk and businesslike. “The wedding will take place within the month. There’s no time to waste.” Kate felt a hollow emptiness settle in her chest, a void where her hopes and dreams had once been. She had just agreed to sacrifice everything for a family that had never truly loved her, and the weight of that decision threatened to crush her. “Is there anything else?” she asked, her voice numb. Robert shook his head. “No. That will be all for tonight. You may go to your room.” Kate nodded and turned to leave, her movements stiff and robotic. As she reached the door, she paused, glancing back at her parents one last time. Her father was already looking down at some papers on his desk, dismissing her as if she were nothing more than another business transaction. Her mother hadn’t moved, her gaze fixed on some distant point, lost in her own thoughts. Without another word, Kate stepped out of the study and closed the door behind her. She felt like she was walking through a fog, the reality of what she had just agreed to still sinking in. She didn’t go to her room right away; instead, she wandered aimlessly through the darkened halls of the mansion, her thoughts a tangled mess. She ended up in the library, a room she had always found comfort in as a child. The familiar scent of old books and polished wood greeted her as she stepped inside. She walked over to one of the tall windows and looked out at the night sky. The stars were still there, distant and unreachable, just like the life she had dreamed of. I’m going to marry a stranger, she thought, the reality of it hitting her all over again. A man who doesn’t know me, who doesn’t love me. All to save a company I never wanted to be a part of. She felt tears prickling at the corners of her eyes, but she blinked them back. Crying wouldn’t change anything. It wouldn’t give her back the life she wanted or undo the decision she had just made.Kate stood there for a long time, staring out into the darkness, trying to reconcile herself with the future that had been forced upon her. She didn’t know Cedric Rutherford, but soon he would be her husband. The thought filled her with a deep sense of dread and sadness. Eventually, she turned away from the window and left the library. There was no point in dwelling on what couldn’t be changed. She would marry Cedric, and she would do what was expected of her. But in the depths of her heart, a seed of resentment took root, a quiet resolve that she would not let this marriage define her. If I’m going to be trapped in this life, she thought, then I’ll find a way to make it my own. Somehow. With that thought, Kate made her way to her room, determined to face whatever came next with as much strength as she could muster. The path ahead was uncertain, but she knew one thing for sure: she would survive, no matter what. And so, the stage is set for Kate's marriage to Cedric Rutherford, a union born out of necessity and deception. As she steps into this new chapter of her life, Kate will face challenges that will test her strength, her resolve, and her heart. But in the world of the wealthy and powerful, nothing is ever as it seems, and Kate will soon discover that her story is far from over.
