Episode 5 (Waking from Darkness)

Zuri’s eyes snapped open as if dragged violently from the depths of a drowning dream. Her chest heaved, breaths sharp and ragged, tearing through the heavy silence. Above her, cold metal tiles stretched across the ceiling, dimly lit by flickering fluorescent lights that hummed an unsettling lullaby. The sterile room wrapped around her like an unfamiliar cage, faintly scented with antiseptic and a faint metallic tang that clung to the air. Her gaze fluttered, struggling to focus. The edges of the world wavered like ripples in disturbed water. Where am I? Her throat felt raw and cracked, voice barely more than a hoarse croak as she whispered, “Where am I?” Instinct screamed at her to move—fight, escape—but the instant she shifted, searing pain exploded through her ribs and abdomen. A white-hot dagger twisting inside her. Her body betrayed her, forcing her back against the pillows. Her heart thundered violently, pounding a frantic rhythm against the cage of her chest. The door slid open silently, and Lin burst in, eyes wide pools of relief and something darker—fear. “Zuri, please… don’t move so fast,” Lin pleaded, voice soft yet urgent. Zuri’s fingers trembled, clutching the rough hospital blanket as if it were a lifeline. “What… what is this place? Why am I here?” Panic laced her words, trembling beneath the surface like a storm waiting to break. Lin’s voice softened, carrying warmth that barely pierced the cold sterility of the room. “You’re safe. We got you here just in time. This is an underground medical ward—hidden, secret. No one from the agency knows about it.” Before Zuri could process the words, footsteps approached—lighter, deliberate. Win stepped in, carrying a tray, his gaze steady and concerned. He placed the food down gently on a small table, then pulled up a chair beside her bed. “You’ve been unconscious for days,” he said quietly, his voice calm but heavy with meaning. “Your body went into shock after the attack. You almost didn’t make it.” The truth hit her like a cold wave, sinking deep into her chest. Her pulse was a wild drum beneath fragile skin, the adrenaline draining to leave behind a heavy, aching exhaustion. She felt brittle, like glass on the verge of shattering. Lin settled next to her, fingertips brushing lightly over Zuri’s shoulder. eyes searching hers for understanding. “Your mind’s just catching up.” Zuri’s gaze flickered between Lin and Win, seeking an anchor in this strange new reality. Her voice was small, uncertain. “My agency… are they still looking for me?” The exchange between Lin and Win was brief but loaded—unspoken fears and the heavy weight of truth. Win nodded slowly. “Yes. They believe you stole the file. They’re combing the city, following every lead.” Zuri swallowed hard, the name slipping out almost as a prayer. “And Adrian?” Lin’s eyes darkened briefly before she answered, her voice steady but guarded. “He’s still at the agency, playing his part. Acting like he doesn’t know where you are. It’s the safest way for now.” Zuri lowered her gaze, fingers tightening around the blanket’s rough fabric. The weight of betrayal, fear, and confusion pressed down on her like a stone. But beneath it all, a fragile ember stirred—a flicker of determination. Win nudged the tray closer. “You need to eat. You won’t have the strength to fight if you don’t.” Her eyes flickered toward the food, but the tremble in her hands betrayed her frustration. The helplessness gnawed at her. Lin leaned closer, voice low and steady, a quiet anchor in the storm. “You’re alive, Zuri. That’s what matters right now. Everything else can wait.” Taking a shaky breath, Zuri reached out, trying to push herself up so she could eat on her own. But the moment she shifted, a blinding, white-hot pain shot through her side, stealing her breath and bringing tears to her eyes. “Aah—!” she gasped, clutching her ribs as her vision blurred. Lin was instantly at her side, steadying her with firm hands. “No, no. Lay back down. You’re not healed yet.” Win leaned in, voice calm but firm, as he placed gentle hands on her shoulders. “Your injuries are still fresh. Moving too much could tear the stitches.” Defeated, Zuri melted back into the pillows, her whole body trembling like a leaf in a storm. Win lifted the spoon again and slowly brought a warm mouthful of soup to her lips. She hesitated—hate burning behind her eyes at the vulnerability—but hunger finally won. Her mouth parted, and the warm liquid slid down her throat, soothing the rawness inside. Lin’s hand stayed on her shoulder, steadying, watching for any sign of pain. They fed her patiently, pausing every time her face tightened in discomfort. The meal was small, but with every bite, Zuri felt a tiny thread of strength weaving back into her fractured body. When the bowl was finally empty, she swallowed hard and her voice came out raw and fragile. “What… what happened after I collapsed? How… how did I end up here?” Lin and Win exchanged a heavy look, the kind that held a thousand silent fears. Win broke the silence first. “You lost a lot of blood. You passed out during the attack. Lin pulled you out of the car while I covered her. We were barely holding on.” Lin’s eyes darkened as the memory crashed back. “You stopped breathing twice. We thought… we lost you on the way here.” Zuri’s fingers tightened around the blanket as those words sank into her bones. Lin’s voice softened, almost a whisper. “Once we defeated the agency’s men, we rushed you here. This hospital isn’t on any map—only a handful of people know about it. We had to get you to a place where they couldn’t find you.” Win added quietly, “If we’d been even a minute later, you wouldn’t be waking up now.” The silence that followed was thick, broken only by the rhythmic beeps of the monitors and the soft hum of the ventilation system. Zuri closed her eyes, letting the memories wash over her—the crash, the gunfire, the shadows closing in, her body failing—and then, the abyss. A shaky breath escaped her lips. “I almost died…” Lin’s fingers tightened gently on hers. “But you didn’t. You fought harder than anyone could’ve imagined.” Slowly, Zuri opened her eyes again, staring at the flickering fluorescent lights above. How did it come to this? she thought. How did everything twist so far from what I knew? Win quietly gathered the empty dishes, stacking them on a small tray with care. The sterile calm of the underground hospital was surreal—a fragile bubble of peace after the chaos of violence and fear. Lin stayed close, her eyes never leaving Zuri’s pale face. Exhaustion was settling deep now, stealing strength from her limbs, but beneath the surface, her spirit still flickered, faint but stubborn. Zuri tried to speak, voice dry and fragile, barely above a whisper. “What now? What happens to me? To us?” Lin exchanged a glance with Win before stepping closer, lowering her voice so only Zuri could hear. “For now, we wait. You need real rest—rest that isn’t pulled under by pain.” Win nodded, wiping down the small table with slow, deliberate movements. “The agency’s hunt isn’t over. They’ll search every corner. We have to be ready.” A shadow flickered across Zuri’s eyes. “How long before they find me here?” Lin’s jaw tightened, voice steel-hard. “Not soon. This place is buried deep beneath the city. They don’t even know it exists.” Zuri’s grip on the blanket tightened, but a cold truth settled in her bones. “But the pain, the chase—it won’t stop.” Lin’s gaze was fierce, full of promise. “No. It won’t. But you’re not alone.” Their eyes met, fierce and unyielding.
