Ryan, convinced by Olivia's words, snapped coldly, "What could happen? She's too cunning to ever put herself at a disadvantage! She's just putting on a show, screaming so you'll let her out. Don't fall for it!"
With that, Ryan hung up.
Furious at Ryan's reprimand, Clara retaliated by releasing her pet snake into the room.
"This is all your fault! Stay here and play with my darling!"
The next instant, a cold snake coiled around my neck.
Terrified, I screamed until the constriction cut off my breath, leaving me gasping.
Clenching my jaw, I fought to stay calm. Cradling my belly with one hand, I mustered the courage to grab the snake with the other, trying to pry it loose. But it sank its fangs into my hand. The pain made me recoil, too frightened to try again.
Helpless, I lay on the ground, tears streaming silently. Inside my belly, it felt like a meat grinder was churning.
Dying, I lay there. Suddenly, the snake around my neck loosened. It began slithering across my body, biting me again and again. However, I was beyond feeling anything now. In my delirium, Death seemed to be calling me.
Just when I teetered on the edge, Clara reappeared.
A sharp whistle summoned the snake away.
She banged heavily on the door, but I lacked the strength to cry out.
A flash of panic crossed her face as she unlocked the freezer door.
It was dim inside. She crouched down, grabbed my hair, and yanked my head up just enough to make out my expression. Then she let out a cold snort and slammed my head hard against the floor.
"You're pathetic! My darling scared you stupid, didn't it? Why stop now? Keep screaming!"
Her eyes blazed with pure contempt.
"So you stopped screaming once you realized calling for Ryan was pointless? Ha, you truly are selfish—only ever acting in your own interest!"
She was fiddling with the snake when a sliver of light revealed blood on its scales.
Clara exploded with rage, delivering a vicious kick to my stomach.
"Jessica! Are you out of your mind? How dare you hurt my snake? Its life matters more than yours!"
She was furious over her snake.
"If my baby dies because of you, I'll make Ryan divorce you! He's always wanted Olivia anyway. Your leaving will just let them finally be together. And don't you dare think of taking the child you struggled to bring into this world!"
In a rage, she turned the temperature down ten degrees and stormed out.
My entire body convulsed uncontrollably from the cold.
Through my haze, I thought I heard a baby crying.
In the darkness, that tiny voice kept calling me "Mommy," begging me to save it.
I broke down sobbing. Today, I could have seen my baby, held it in my arms. We were only one step away. Why must fate torment my child like this?
I let out a raw scream as helplessness stabbed through my heart.
With rescue nearly hopeless, I endured the agony to gently stroke my belly, murmuring to my baby.
If possible, I wished that, in its next life, it would be born into a family where a father truly loved the mother. Only then would it be happy.
My breathing grew faint, my blood like ice.
Then suddenly, the cold storage door opened, flooding the space with light.
The sight of me drenched in blood shocked the man.
Mustering my last strength, I crawled forward and gasped, "Help..."
His voice quivered with fear.
"Who are you? What did you do? You must have really crossed Mr. Johnson to be locked in here for punishment?"
He looked at me with suspicion.
"I'm Ryan's wife."
With great effort, I extended my blood-stained hand. The unique diamond ring on it was now unrecognizable under the crimson smear.
"This is the diamond ring he gave me."
When he saw the ring, he realized who I was. He was about to help me up but hesitated, then pulled out his phone to call Ryan.
"Mr. Johnson, I came to collect the goods and found your wife here—she's covered in blood. Should I rush her to the hospital now?"
Ryan's voice was laced with confusion.
"Blood? She actually hurt Clara's snake that badly? There's even blood all over the floor—no wonder Clara was so upset."
His tone hardened.
"No need for the hospital. That's not her blood. She's fine. I'll pick her up myself later."
As the worker tried to explain further, Ryan coldly hung up.
The man, helpless, walked past me to move the goods, but later came back unexpectedly.
It seemed he had wrestled with his conscience.
"You're pregnant. I can't just let you die. Consider it good karma for my wife and her unborn baby."
He dragged me out of the freezer and called an ambulance.
When I was rescued, my heart finally relaxed.
But when we arrived at the hospital, there was no equipment ready for my delivery.
