Chapter 3

Fearing any complications during Olivia's delivery, Ryan had exclusively secured all the hospital's medical equipment. My condition was critical, and to ensure my safety, the doctors had no choice but to transfer me to a fully equipped private hospital. The doctors found the number labeled "husband" in my contacts and called it. "Hello, are you Jessica's husband? Come to the hospital immediately. Jessica is in critical condition, at risk of a life-threatening amniotic fluid complication." Ryan's impatience was evident. Suddenly raising his voice, he shouted, "Jessica! You're quite resourceful, aren't you? You managed to get out on your own, and now you've hired someone to pose as a doctor to trick me! Let me make this clear: no matter what tricks you've pulled, I won't come! I know your body better than anyone. Nothing will go wrong. Just stay put until the due date. Stop using these dirty tricks to disgust me." The doctor gave me a pitying look before turning to a colleague and saying, "Get her to the private hospital first. We'll deal with the equipment later." However, I never expected to end up at the same hospital as Olivia. Despite the doctors' pleas, Ryan refused to spare even a single piece of equipment. Through the wall, I heard his voice, cold as steel. "No matter who it is, I won't let Olivia lose even the slightest chance of survival. I won't take any risks!" I crumpled to the floor, limp and barely conscious, when my gaze suddenly met someone's outside the door. It was James, Ryan's assistant. When he saw me, his eyes widened in shock, as if unsure it was really me. I tried to speak, but my voice was hoarse. Instead, he rushed past me to Ryan. "Sir, there's a bloodied woman outside—she looks like... Madam." Ryan's brow furrowed deeply as he rubbed his fingertips, utterly unconvinced. "Impossible. She's heavily pregnant, and there's no way she could have gotten here." James whispered cautiously, "Maybe I should go out and check. If it's really Madam, she and the baby could be in grave danger!" Ryan shot James a venomous glare. "I said impossible! If it were her, she wouldn't be this silent. She'd have stormed in demanding her assets by now. Besides, a selfish woman like her would never let herself get drenched in blood!" The doctor kept pleading for medical equipment, but Ryan threatened his job instead. In the end, the doctor had no choice. He looked at me apologetically and said there was nothing he could do. But since I had managed to escape the freezer, I refused to give up even the slimmest chance for my child. Enduring the excruciating pain, I cradled my belly and borrowed the doctor's phone. I dialed a number I had memorized by heart. "Dad, I'll never defy you again. Save me!" My father didn't ask for an explanation. He simply asked for my address. The moment I heard his voice, I couldn't stop the tears. Grievance, regret, and a tangle of other emotions overwhelmed me. Within fifteen minutes, my father's helicopter arrived. A team of doctors rushed out. I was lifted into the helicopter, which was fully equipped with medical facilities. The doctors immediately began an emergency delivery. Dozens of scalpels moved across my lower abdomen. Even with anesthesia, I could still feel the pain. After a long while, a doctor finally exhaled in relief. "The baby is out!" But I didn't hear my baby's cry. My heart felt like it had been ripped apart. A terrible premonition flooded my mind. My voice trembling, I asked, "My baby is healthy, right?" The doctor quickly pressed me back onto the bed and said sternly, "Please, stay calm. The baby is in critical condition and needs treatment back on the island." My mind went blank. All I could do was nod. As the helicopter took off, I suddenly called out to my father's aide. "After I leave, what about Ryan? He'll turn the world upside down to find me." He patted my hand reassuringly. "Don't worry, the boss has taken care of everything." Ryan stood vigil outside the operating room. The moment the doors opened, his first concern was whether Olivia was safe and sound. When he entered the ward, he cradled the newborn in his arms, his eyes brimming with joy as he murmured, "She looks just like you... So beautiful." He paused, lost in thought. 'Who will Jessica's child resemble? If it's a girl, she will likely take after her mother. That child will be even more beautiful.' Once the baby was lulled to sleep, Ryan turned to leave. It was already the next day—time to take Jessica to the hospital. Just then, James appeared. Ryan shoved the keys at him. "Drive to the cold storage and bring Jessica to the hospital." James stood rooted in place, shaking violently, terror in his eyes. As Ryan's impatience grew, James stammered through chattering teeth, "Madam and the baby... They didn't make it…."
