Chapter 1: Awakening in hell

1375 Words
A cold wind blew against his face, startling Liam awake. He realized he was no longer in his dorm room. He was lying on the cold, wet ground, the moisture rising from the road surface making him a little uncomfortable. A foul stench rushed into his nose, so strong that it nauseated him. Liam raised his head and looked around. In front of him was a ruined street—abandoned high-rise buildings. Burnt-out vehicles were scattered on the road. Not a single person. Not a sound except for the wind whistling through the empty streets. Not a single street light was still on. In the sky, only the faint moonlight shone down. The scene here was no different from the scenes of an abandoned city after a terrifying battle in a movie. "What the hell is this?" Liam got up in shock, his whole body aching from lying on the cold road, luckily he was not injured. But Liam noticed that on his left arm, a translucent screen appeared on his wrist. Before Liam could understand what was going on, a mechanical voice rang out in his mind. [Survival system activated.] [Player: Liam.] Then a transparent status board appeared before Liam's eyes: [Level 1] HP: 100/100 VIT: 100/100 SAN: 5/5 EXP: 0/100 Skills: [None] Weapons: [None] Liam was stunned. This was... the interface of a game? Was he caught in that game disc? Was he dreaming? But the cold feeling on his skin, the smell of dust and smoke, everything was too real! Liam turned his head to look around, but then he heard a terrifying sound. GRRHHH... From the rubble in front, a crooked figure slowly walked out. The face was distorted and rotten, the eyes were white and lifeless. The flesh on the body was torn to reveal rotten muscles covered with maggots. The hideous mouth opened wide and emitted hoarse moans. Liam realized it was a zombie and was terrified, then he didn't have time to think and immediately ran away. "f**k! f**k! Why did I get sucked into this game disc!" The zombie rushed forward like a wild animal. Liam's heart was pounding wildly. He crossed a small path, his foot tripped over a pile of rubble and almost fell to the ground. Liam gasped and quickly regained his balance, he didn't have time to stop, the zombie's screams and groans were getting closer and closer. Liam took the opportunity to quickly glance back. Two… three… five more zombies came out of nowhere like a flood. They were hunting him. Cold sweat ran down Liam’s spine. He tried to speed up and run as fast as he could. But just as Liam was about to run through an alley, a dark figure suddenly rushed out and hit him straight. Liam fell to the ground. A cold arm reached out, its sharp nails just centimeters from his face. “NO!!!” Liam screamed. Instincts took over. He raised his foot and kicked the zombie hard in the stomach. It fell backward but immediately jumped up, its jagged teeth bared in the air. Its gray skin was covered with veins that had turned black. Its bloody face looked extremely terrifying. The series of groans and the disgusting appearance made Liam’s fear rise to the limit. He felt like his heart was about to jump out of his chest. But Liam didn’t want to die. He quickly stood up before the zombie pounced again. The zombies behind him had also come, they were like a storm that wanted to sweep everything away. Liam turned around and wanted to run away, but unexpectedly, not far away, two zombies appeared. They were also rushing towards him. At this moment, Liam wanted to curse. He didn't think much and quickly picked up the iron bar lying on the side of the road to defend himself. Either the zombies died, or he died. That's it. Even though he wasn't good at playing games, this was his life, he had to be brave. The zombies gradually surrounded him, forcing him back against the concrete wall. The stench from the rotting flesh filled the air, and the screams were terrifying. Liam was breathing heavily, his back pressed tightly against the cold brick wall. His eyes darted around, his heart pounding madly in his chest, sweat dripping down his face. They were only a few meters away from him. The hoarse moans rang out, getting more and more intense. "Come here, monsters." He muttered, his hands shaking. The nearest zombie jumped forward, its torn mouth wide open, rotting fingers reaching out towards him. Liam swung the iron bar at the zombie. It was knocked back but immediately got up. The zombies behind him were even more ferocious. They pounced at the same time, forcing Liam to block them with the iron bar in his hand, but his strength was limited, the zombies pressed him tighter and tighter against the wall behind him. The disgusting faces, smeared with blood and the stench of decay, got closer and closer to Liam's face. They greedily wanted to bite into his fresh flesh. Liam gritted his teeth and held his breath, his face flushed red, and his arms tensed as much as they could. BANG! At this moment, a loud gunshot echoed in the night. A bullet hit the zombie's forehead right in front of Liam, black blood spurted out like a fountain. The zombie fell to the ground and lay motionless. Immediately after, more gunshots rang out, and the remaining zombies were completely defeated. Liam blinked in shock. From a nearby ruined building, a girl wearing a black hoodie was pointing a pistol down. Her shoulder-length platinum hair, sharp eyes flashed in the darkness. A beauty but full of coldness and death. "What are you standing there for? Run away, i***t!" The girl's voice rang out. Before Liam could react, the sound of a small motorbike came from afar. The driver was a young man about Liam's age, tall and thin with a mischievous face. The young man raised his eyebrows and shouted: "Get up here quickly, the gunshots have attracted the zombies." With no other choice, Liam immediately jumped onto the saddle. Before Liam could sit still, the young man turned the clutch and rushed away. The zombies were indeed attracted by the gunshots and were pouring into the road from all directions at a terrifying speed. One of the tall zombies suddenly stepped on the other zombies and jumped towards the car. Liam turned his head and widened his eyes in fear. Just as he was about to swing the iron bar in his hand to defend himself, a dagger flew straight down from above and stabbed into the zombie's skull. It was immediately knocked down and buried under the feet of the zombies. It was the girl who saved Liam once more. After confirming that he was safe, she quickly ran like the wind across the rooftops. The figure under the moonlight rushed away like a gust of wind without a trace of fear. GRHHH…. The crazy roars of the zombies sounded like they were right in his ears. The young man immediately accelerated the motorbike like crazy through the ruined streets, skillfully avoiding the rubble and burnt-out vehicles. Liam turned his head to look at the zombies behind him, gritting his teeth and hugging the young man tightly so as not to fall off the saddle. “Hold on tight.” The young man driving said, then when they reached the intersection ahead, he turned the handlebars to the left and made a beautiful turn. Liam saw the motorcycle start to tilt to the left and almost fell to the ground, he felt his feet seemed to scrape against the road. It was a feeling that was both scary and exciting for Liam. As soon as he turned left into the intersection, the boy ran straight into an old house. The door of the house was immediately slammed shut. The platinum-haired girl quickly used a large rusty iron bar to block the door. She turned back to look at the two people on the motorcycle and signaled for silence. They immediately froze, each trying to hold back their heavy breathing.
