Marianne (loudly): “She stole my identity! She connived with the council to defame me and claimed my rightful place! This... marriage... is a fraud!”
Vampire Lord (telepathically): “She reeks of desperation. Why accuse her here, before us all?”
Vampire Elder: “The bride doesn’t flinch. She knows something we don’t.”
Selena does not react. She keeps her gaze steady, her silence unnerving to all.
Selena (internal thought): “Let her weave her web. It will strangle her soon enough.”
A bridesmaid, trembling but resolute, steps out of line.
Bridesmaid (hesitant): “I... I can’t stay silent anymore.”
Marianne glares daggers at her. “Don’t you dare.”
Bridesmaid: “Lady Selena fetched you from bars where men toyed with you. She silenced the rumors when you... gained favor with council members in ways unbefitting a royal.”
Gasps ripple through the room as the maid reveals years of Selena covering for Marianne’s indiscretions:As the room buzzes with tension, Prince William takes a deliberate step forward. The murmurs cease instantly, his commanding presence holding the crowd in silent anticipation. His hazel eyes, sharp and assessing, sweep over the humans and the vampires before settling on Marianne.
William (calmly):
“Enough.”
His voice carries an edge, authoritative yet almost disappointed. Marianne stiffens but meets his gaze, trying to maintain her composure.
William (addressing the room):
“It appears our ceremony has been interrupted by accusations... and confessions. Allow me to clarify the truth.”
He turns toward the bridesmaid who had spoken out, nodding slightly in acknowledgment.
William (to the bridesmaid):
“Your courage is commendable. You speak the truth. And I can confirm this, for I had my doubts about the princess long before this day.”
Marianne’s face flushes with anger and fear.
Marianne (desperately):
“What are you saying? How could you—”
He cuts her off, his voice firm:
William:
“I am saying that I have long observed your actions, Princess Marianne. Your dealings with the council members were no secret to those who sought the truth. My sources revealed your exploits—how you sought influence through...” He pauses, letting the implication settle uncomfortably. “...less than honorable means.”
The room erupts into whispers, some of disbelief, others of condemnation.
William (raising his voice to silence the crowd):
“And yet, even knowing this, Lady Selena kept your secrets. She shielded you, bore the consequences of your actions, and stood silent when your behavior endangered your family’s honor. Her loyalty was to you, despite your lack of gratitude.”
Marianne’s expression shifts from defiance to dread, her lips trembling.
William (final statement):
“This union is no fraud. It is justice. And now, Princess Marianne, justice will find you.”
The vampires exchange darkly amused glances.
Vampire Elder: “Such ambition. Such disgrace.”The human crowd begins to whisper nervously.
Human Noble: “This cannot be! The council members vouched for her!”
Another Noble: “And now their loyalty is clear... to their own vices.”
The implicated council members try to deflect blame, stammering denials.
Council Member: “We... we didn’t know!”
Another Council Member: “Lies! This is a trap!”
Murmurs ripple through the humans.
Human Noble (to another): “Could it be true? Such deceit would be unprecedented!”
The vampires remain eerily composed but exchange knowing glances.
King of the humans, torn between duty and family, reluctantly summons guards.
Human King: “Take her into confinement.”
Vampire Elder: “No. She comes with us.”
Marianne realizes the full extent of her downfall, her voice breaking.
Marianne: “Selena, please! Help me!”
Selena doesn’t respond, her silence speaking volumes.
The vampire council rises, their authority silencing the room.
Vampire Elder: “This is an insult to our royal family. Marianne and her conspirators will face judgment in our kingdom.”
Marianne’s face pales. “No, you can’t!”
Selena stands motionless, watching the chaos with a small, hidden smile. As the guards approach Marianne, she resists, her voice shaking with desperation.
Marianne (pleading):
“Selena! Don’t let them take me! Please, help me! You’ve always protected me!”
Selena remains still, her expression unreadable. She watches as the guards grasp Marianne’s arms, forcing her to step back. Finally, she takes a slow, deliberate step forward, her green eyes sharp as they meet Marianne’s.
Selena (coldly):
“Protected you? Perhaps I did... but not anymore. Consider this the consequence of your own ambition.”
Marianne shakes her head, her voice cracking:
Marianne:
“You don’t mean that! We’re family!”
Selena’s lips curl into the faintest, almost cruel smile.
Selena:
“Family? You betrayed me the moment you stepped into this room. You betrayed us all long before today.”
Marianne’s face crumbles, tears streaking her cheeks as she’s dragged toward the vampires awaiting her.
Selena turns away, her voice icy and final:
Selena:
“Goodbye, Marianne. May your ambition serve you well in their kingdom.”
Selena (internal thought): “Years of cover-ups, undone in moments. Poetic.”
As the guards escort Marianne and the council members out, Selena steps forward to face Prince William, calm and composed.
The vampires now regard her with awe and respect.
The hall was nearly silent now, the echoes of the ceremony fading into stillness. Selena approached her family, her steps deliberate and steady, though each one felt heavier than the last. Her father stood at the forefront, his expression strained with regret. Her brothers hovered nearby, their guilt painted across their faces.
Her heart twisted as she saw them like this, looking so small and uncertain. These were the men who had once seemed so strong, so invincible to her as a child. But they hadn’t been there when she needed them most. Not after her mother’s death, not when the world turned cold and empty.
Selena (coldly):
“Well, here we are. The moment you’ve all been waiting for. The prize handed over to secure your alliances.”
She saw her father flinch, the words cutting through him like a blade. One of her younger brothers, braver or perhaps more naive, stepped forward.
Younger Brother (pleading):
“Selena, it wasn’t supposed to be like this. We never wanted—”
Her hand rose, halting his words before they could wound her further.
Selena (firmly):
“Don’t. Don’t pretend now that you care. Where were you when I needed you? After Mother...?”
Her voice quivered, despite her efforts to keep it steady. She clenched her fists, nails digging into her palms, using the pain to anchor herself. The memory of her mother’s absence hit her like a wave, and the emptiness that had followed filled her lungs like water.
They left you alone. You had no one. No one but yourself.
Her father finally broke the silence, his voice heavy with regret.
Father:
“We thought we were protecting you, Selena. We... I failed you. I see that now.”
She wanted to believe him, wanted to feel the warmth of his apology heal the raw wounds left by years of neglect. But the walls she’d built around her heart were too high, too thick.
She looked at her brothers. They avoided her gaze, their shame palpable. The image of them laughing together, carefree and unburdened while she bore the weight of their family’s expectations, flashed in her mind.
Where were you when I cried alone in Mother’s room? When I needed someone to tell me I wasn’t a ghost in my own home?
Selena:
“It’s too late for that now. Words don’t undo years of neglect or betrayal.”
Her father’s voice cracked as he tried to bridge the gap between them.
Father (desperately):
“Selena, I know this doesn’t change anything, but we’re sorry. For everything. If there was another way...”
Another way. Always another way. But I was the easiest choice, wasn’t I?
Her throat tightened, the lump threatening to escape as tears pricked her eyes. She swallowed it down, forcing herself to stay cold. They didn’t deserve her forgiveness—not yet.
Selena (steadily):
“Goodbye, Father. Goodbye, brothers. I hope one day, you’ll understand the cost of what you’ve done. And I hope it was worth it.”
She saw her father step forward, his hand outstretched as if to stop her. For a moment, her resolve wavered. She thought of running to him, letting his arms close around her as they once had when she was a child. But those days were gone, and the cracks in her heart were too deep to mend with a single embrace.
You can’t go back. You can’t let them see you break.
She turned and walked away, her back straight and her steps measured. Every step felt like a nail driving into her chest, each one a reminder that she was leaving behind not just her family, but the girl she had once been.
Her freedom. Her family. Herself.
The vampires watched her, their sharp eyes unrelenting, but she refused to meet their gaze. Let them see only strength, only defiance. Inside, her heart splintered, but they didn’t need to know that. No one needed to know.
This is the price of survival.
And so, she walked forward into the unknown, carrying the weight of her past and the cold hope of her future.
