“Maybe she’ll come back herself.” Liddell shook his head. “She probably sent a messenger to do her packing in the first place. That’s why this was overlooked. She’ll probably send the same one back, and we don’t want to be here when he arrives.” Outside on the street, Liddell hailed a cab, gave the driver the address of the Advance, leaned back against the cushions. Advance“I got news for you, Johnny,” Muggsy told him. “If you’re figuring on dropping me off at the office, no soap. I’m sticking along.” Liddell fumbled for his cigarettes, found himself out, took the girl’s purse, ransacked it to come up with a pack. “Not this time, Muggs. I’ve got some straight talking to do, and I do it best without witnesses.” He stuck a cigarette in the corner of his mouth, lit it, dropped his voice.
