Several years later, autumn returned to Portland with cool breezes and trees painted in gold and crimson. The city looked peaceful, just as it always did this time of year. Lena stood inside her flower shop, now larger than it used to be. Over the years the little shop had grown into a popular place in the neighborhood. People came not only for flowers, but for the warm feeling the shop seemed to carry. Her daughter—now older and taller—was helping arrange bouquets near the window. “Mom,” she said while tying a ribbon around a bundle of roses, “a woman outside says she wants to talk to you.” Lena glanced toward the door. “Did she say what it’s about?” “No,” the girl replied. “But she looks serious.” Lena wiped her hands on her apron and walked toward the entrance.
