They began walking, Slide at the front of the line, Ember just behind him, then Jack and Tjon carrying Layla. They decided to stop every hour or so to switch out the carriers and to gather some sustenance. “We should have only had one more night left,” he said to Ember as they stood in the forest. “Then we will get to the rendezvous point if everything goes as smoothly as I’m imagining it.” Ember stood next to him, rocking the baby back and forth.
