VJ Tommy and I agreed as we closed up the cabin we would make an appointment to meet with Mr. Marshall on Monday, which would give us a few days to make sure everything was all right on the farm and his ranch. The lawyer had said he wanted to get the paperwork concerning the Doc’s land and cabin cleared up as soon as possible, so we knew he would be pleased we had come to a decision so quickly. My foreman, Lee, had laughed when I told him what Tommy and I planned to do when we were in McCook on Monday and assured me he and his wife would be there. In fact, he told me, if I hadn’t invited them, his wife would have had his hide, and mine, too. That night when Tommy drove over to my house to spend the night, I told him Leroy and Margaret Brown and my cook, Mrs. Simon, were my guest list. W
