Late at night, while everyone else slept, quiet footsteps echoed through the dungeon. Nathan stirred and slowly sat up. After what had happened the night before, he hadn’t been given food. His stomach ached with hunger. So when he heard the sound, he assumed it was the guards coming to bring him something to eat. Instead, a woman appeared at the gate. She wore a black cloak, her face hidden in the shadows. Nathan crawled toward the bars, stopping near her feet. The woman knelt, bringing herself to his level, then pulled back her hood. “My lady,” he breathed. “How did you get here? I thought no one was allowed to see m....” He stopped when Lumori pressed a finger gently against his lips. “Shhhhh,” she whispered. He swallowed hard as he watched her. Her lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile. “Why do I hear she is still alive?” Lumori asked calmly, as if the question meant nothing at all. “My lady, I did what you told me, but......” He didn’t get to finish. Lumori grabbed his shirt and slammed him against the iron bars. The metal rattled loudly as his chest struck it, and a cry of pain escaped his lips. Her eyes burned into his. “There should be no but.” Her face darkened for a moment before smoothing into a pleasant expression. She tilted her head slightly as she rose to her feet. “Well, if you can’t handle a simple task, then you don’t deserve this,” she said, a smile slowly spreading across her face as she slightly lifted her gown showing her bare thighs. He gulped at the sight of it. From beneath her silk gown, she suddenly drew a knife and drove it straight into his chest. His eyes widened in shock as he stumbled and fell onto his back. She had caught him completely off guard, never in a million years did he imagine she could do this to him. He had loved her all his life and had believed she loved him too. But their worlds were different. He was human, and she was a powerful werewolf. The pain stole his voice, he could only beg with his eyes. “Burn in hell,” she spat coldly. Without wasting another second, she pulled a cloak over her head and slipped out before anyone could discover what she had done. She moved quickly through the dungeon, taking the hidden passage that only she knew existed. But after a few steps, a chill ran down her spine. She was no longer alone. A shadow followed her. She stopped abruptly and turned, her voice sharp. “Show yourself.” Silence followed. “I fear no one,” she declared, her chest rising with pride. “I am a warrior, the strongest female in this pack, daughter of the Alpha. Show yourself.” The darkness gathered in front of her and took shape. Lumori swallowed, already knowing what stood before her. A demon stood in front of her. Her mind flashed to the murder she had just committed. That must have been what summoned it. “I know what you seek, Lumori,” the demon said, its voice echoing like something from the underworld. She did not flinch. Fear was not in her nature. In truth, they were alike. Both wicked, both hungry for power. “The Harmon isn’t broken,” she said. “How are you here?” “A murder was committed this morning,” it replied. “That act disturbed the balance and granted me access to this world.” Lumori frowned, her thoughts racing. If Valerie had truly been killed, how was she still alive? “We are similar,” the spirit continued. “Allow me to possess you, and I will give you the power to reclaim what was stolen from you.” Her eyes lit up. This was everything she had ever wanted. If destroying the Harmon was the price, so be it. “What do you gain?” she asked carefully. “The Harmon must fall,” the demon answered. “When it does, others of my kind will enter this world. We have waited long enough.” Lumori didn’t care what would happen to anyone else. They had stood by while the Moon Goddess took what should have been hers. She raised her hands and tilted her head back, welcoming the darkness. The demon flowed into her body. Her eyes turned pitch black for a moment before returning to normal. A slow, manic smile spread across her lips. “Let the war begin,” she whispered. She moved toward the exit with slow, deliberate steps, an intimidating aura radiating from her. Even her scent had changed. She was no longer the same woman who had entered the dungeon. A new power surged through her veins, wild and intoxicating, making her feel as though she could bend iron with her bare hands. A guard stationed at the dungeon heard a strange noise and went to check the cells. The moment he saw Nathan lying lifeless in a pool of his own blood, panic seized him. His heart began to pound as he rushed deeper into the corridor, hoping to catch whoever had done it. That was when he noticed a figure slipping through the shadows ahead. “Who’s there?” he called, hurrying forward but the figure did not stop. “I command you to halt!” he grabbed her shoulder and turned her around. The moment he saw her face, he froze. “My lady…” he gasped, stumbling backward, shock written all over his face. Lumori twisted his arm with unnatural strength. Before he could scream, she drove the knife into him the same blade that had killed Nathan. Inside her, the demon laughed. “Yes… This will make us stronger. The Harmon will break.” Lumori’s smile widened.
