Chapter 2: Vanishing Point: The Relentless Chase

Ryo Faces Klara Ryo entered the van, scanning its dimly lit interior. He knew Klara was hiding in a secure compartment, and convincing her would take every ounce of his cunning. “Klara,” he called out, his tone calm but urgent. “I’m here to help. There’s a bomb in this van. We’ve got less than ten minutes before it explodes!” Klara’s voice crackled through the van’s intercom system; her tone skeptical. “Who are you? And why should I trust you?” “I’m not your enemy,” Ryo replied, moving closer to the compartment. “I don’t want anything from you — except for you to stay alive. Whoever planted this bomb doesn’t care if you die.” “Do you think I’m stupid?” Klara’s voice was sharp, but there was a slight tremor of uncertainty. “If there’s really a bomb, why are you here risking your life?” Ryo sighed, feigning frustration. “Because I was hired to protect you! An assassination attempt is underway, and you’re the target. Do you want to argue with me, or do you want to survive?” Her tone turned colder. “You’re lying. Who sent you? What do you really want?” “Klara, listen to me!” Ryo shouted, slamming his fist against the compartment door. “I don’t care if you believe me. But if we don’t get out of this van now, it won’t matter who’s right or wrong — we’ll both be dead.” Through the intercom, Klara’s voice steadied. “You’re making a mistake,” she warned. “If you open this door, you won’t get what you want.” Ryo smirked, muttering to himself, “We’ll see about that.” The door creaked slightly but held firm. Frustrated, Ryo inspected the panel, searching for any electric lines or mechanisms he could disable, but found nothing of use. He activated the wrist blade integrated into his cybernetics and slashed at the door, but it barely left a scratch. Growling in frustration, he slammed his fist against the panel. Realizing brute force wasn’t an option, Ryo hacked into the van’s central system, overriding its controls. The engine roared to life, and he drove out of the park, gripping the wheel tightly. Ryo Contacts His Employer As the van roared down the street, Ryo activated the Braindance system integrated at the nape of his neck. The neural interface connected him directly to his employer. “I’ve got her locked in the van, but she’s suspicious,” he communicated silently, his thoughts converted seamlessly into a message. “I tried to trick her with a hoax about a bomb, but she didn’t buy it. Now she thinks I’m an assassin.” The voice on the other end was calm. “Head to Zhongshi Plaza. It’s controlled by the Fengshi Gang. They’re supporters of our cause and receive funding from us. They handle some of our discreet operations and will provide cover. Their men will meet you at the entrance and lead you to a safer location.” “Got it,” Ryo replied, swerving onto the main road. The Chase Intensifies Ryo’s van roared down the neon-lit streets, the hum of police sirens growing louder behind him. Blue and red lights flashed, casting eerie shadows on the buildings. The synthesized voice of the police blared through the van’s comm system, “Cease all movement and surrender immediately! Non-compliance will result in force!” Klara’s voice crackled through the intercom, dripping with sarcasm. “They’re coming for you, not me. Give up now, and maybe they’ll go easy on you.” Ryo smirked; his focus laser-sharp on the controls. “You’re awfully chatty for someone locked in a compartment.” Inside one of the police cars, Officer Dietrich Schneider, a seasoned German cop with a no-nonsense attitude, barked orders into his comm unit. “All units, form a perimeter around the alley exits. We can’t let him escape!” As Ryo sped through the alley, he heard the police scanner crackling with activity. “This is Eagle One,” a drone operator reported. “We’ve got a visual on the suspect’s van. Deploying intercept drones now.” “You can’t run forever,” Klara said through the intercom. “The drones will track you wherever you go.” Ryo grinned, his fingers tightening on the steering wheel. “You don’t give up, do you?” Officer Schneider watched the van disappear into the narrow passage on his HUD. “He’s trying to lose us in the tunnels. Drone units, maintain visual contact. Ground units, block off the exits!” As he neared Zhongshi Plaza, the police vehicles began closing in again. His mind raced, calculating his next move. He spotted a construction site ahead and knew he had to act fast. The van swerved into the site, narrowly avoiding heavy machinery and piles of debris. The police cars skidded to a halt, unable to follow through the maze of obstacles. “You’re insane,” Klara said, her voice cracking. “Maybe,” Ryo muttered, “but I get results.” Officer Schneider’s voice crackled over the comms. “All units, the suspect is making his way through the construction site. Do not lose visual contact. I want roadblocks set up at all exits!” Ryo’s eyes darted around, searching for an escape. He spotted a ramp leading to an elevated roadway and floored the gas pedal, the van lurching upwards. The police cars followed, but Ryo swerved sharply, causing one of the cars to crash into a barrier. Klara’s voice was mocking. “You think you can outdrive the entire police force? You’re as good as caught.” Ignoring her, Ryo pushed the van to its limits, weaving through traffic and outmanoeuvring the police. He narrowly avoided collisions and skidded around tight corners, his keen instincts guiding him through the urban jungle. The Confrontation As the van sped forward, Klara’s voice cut through the intercom again. “If it’s money you want, I can make you a better offer. Stop this now, and I’ll pay you more than whoever hired you.” Ryo snorted. “You think I’m that stupid? I’m not falling for your tactics.” Klara’s tone darkened. “You’re just another codebreaker. There were many before you who tried to steal from me. None of them succeeded. And the ones who got caught? They didn’t live long enough for interrogation. Their deaths were made to look like suicides or accidents. That’s the fate of all who come after me. You’re throwing your life away.” Ryo’s jaw tightened. “Quit your yapping. Even if I took your offer, I’m sure you’d try to take me out afterward. You’re not letting anyone walk away clean.” Klara’s voice was sharper now, filled with suspicion. “But let me guess — Caspian Wolfe? Greta Winterfield? They’ve been after my Data Sphere for years, sending people like you. Do you really think you’re the first one to try and fail?” Ryo maintained his grip on the wheel. “I’m not here to play games. My client has their reasons for wanting you out of the way.” Officer Schneider, now in the lead pursuit car, growled into his comms. “All units, the suspect is heading towards Zhongshi Plaza. Cut him off and prepare for a high-speed interception.” Ryo glanced at his HUD. Zhongshi Plaza was still a few kilometres away, and the police were closing in fast. His grip on the wheel tightened as he realized the true gravity of his situation. The van sped through the city, evading roadblocks and navigating the chaotic streets with precision, but the police were relentless. With the tension rising and the clock ticking, Ryo knew the next few minutes would determine everything. The van roared through the neon-lit streets, the shadow of Zhongshi Plaza looming in the distance, but safety was still far from reach. CHAPER 3 Coming Soon…..
