4 APPLE TREES The entrance bell above the front door chimed, stirring Madame Katherine from her deep reverie. She placed the framed picture she’d been staring at for the past ten minutes back onto the dingy bureau. The top of the chest was littered with an array of mystical trinkets that Madame Katherine’s mother had collected in life. “Hello,” a man’s voice called, and then politely, “I know I’m a bit late, but I do have an appointment.” “I’ll be right out,” Madame Katherine answered. She checked the spreadsheet on the corner computer: MR. SWENSON, PALM READING, 4:45 pm. The man was late by ten minutes. Madame Katherine was exhausted from the full slate of appointments throughout the day, but this was now her business alone. She needed the word on the street to be that Madame Katherine
