CHAPTER 8: AFTERMATH

Chapter Eight: Aftermath Elara woke up late the next morning. That alone told her how bad yesterday had been. Her body felt heavy, like it had been pressed into the mattress overnight. Her shoulders ached. Her head throbbed faintly. For a few seconds, she lay still, staring at the ceiling, letting the silence settle. Then reality rushed back. The emergency. The endless patients. And Lucien—bleeding, smirking, lying on a hospital bed like he belonged there. She exhaled slowly and sat up. --- By the time Elara arrived at the hospital, the corridors were calmer. Too calm. The kind of quiet that followed chaos, where everyone moved softer, slower, as if the walls themselves were tired. “Morning, superhero,” Nina whispered loudly as soon as she saw Elara. Elara shot her a look. “If you raise your voice again, I will personally write you up.” Nina grinned. “You’re alive. That’s good news.” Clara leaned over the desk. “You worked almost twenty hours yesterday.” “I know,” Elara said flatly. “And,” Sophie added gently, “you have one patient asking for you specifically.” Elara froze. “Who?” Sophie didn’t smile. “Lucien Moreau.” Of course. --- She stood outside his private recovery room longer than necessary. Not because she was nervous. She refused to call it that. She was simply… calculating. Professional. Prepared. When she finally entered, Lucien was awake. He looked different in a hospital bed. Less polished. Less dangerous. A faint bruise marked his jaw, and his arm was wrapped in bandages. Still, his eyes were sharp. Watching. Always watching. “Doctor,” he greeted softly. “You look tired.” She ignored the comment. “You’re stable. You’ll be discharged within forty-eight hours if there are no complications.” “Disappointed?” he asked. She glanced at him. “Relieved.” That was the truth, and they both knew it. He studied her face. “You didn’t have to be the one to check on me.” “I did,” she replied. “You were my patient.” A pause. “Was,” he corrected. “Now I’m something else.” She met his gaze. “Don’t push.” Lucien smiled faintly. “I wouldn’t dare. Not today.” --- Later that evening, Elara attended a small dinner arranged by both families. She hated how easily they called it small. The room was still filled with people who spoke softly and judged loudly. Crystal glasses. Perfect posture. Hidden expectations. Lucien arrived late, freshly discharged against Elara’s better advice. “You’re reckless,” she muttered as he sat beside her. “You stitched me back together,” he said calmly. “I trust your work.” She rolled her eyes, but her jaw tightened. During the dinner, questions circled them like vultures. Wedding dates. Public appearances. Future plans. Elara let them talk. Then she spoke. “This arrangement continues under one condition,” she said clearly. The table went silent. Lucien turned to her, genuinely curious. “Go on.” “I will not give up my career. Ever,” she said. “No reduced hours. No public role replacing my work. No pressure to become decorative.” Her parents stiffened. His mother’s eyes sharpened. Lucien didn’t interrupt. “And,” Elara continued, “our private lives remain private. No controlling my movements. No monitoring my phone. No expectations beyond what we agree to.” Silence stretched. Lucien leaned back slightly, considering. Then he nodded. “Accepted.” Everyone turned to him. “I don’t want a prisoner,” he added calmly. “I want a partner who stays because she chooses to.” Elara looked at him, surprised despite herself. That was… unexpected. --- That night, as they stood outside under the cool city air, Elara spoke quietly. “You didn’t have to agree so easily.” Lucien shrugged. “You underestimate how much I respect resistance.” She studied him. “That’s dangerous.” He smiled, slow and knowing. “So are you.” For the first time, Elara felt it clearly—not attraction, not trust, but something far more unsettling. Recognition. Two people standing on opposite sides of control, slowly realizing neither intended to back down. And somehow, neither wanted to walk away.
