Hush watched as Manning’s expression went from hopeful to worried. He glanced out over the dark ocean. Manning was probably right about the guns. Several animals’ minds had signaled alarm, and they all pinpointed the disturbance to come from the same location. “Come on, we need to go to the station.” Manning held out his hand, but Hush shook his head. He might not have been part of bringing guns into the city, but he was connected to them. “You go, save Jacobs. I need to do this.” He got to his feet and began walking along the road leading past the terminals. There were buildings and vehicles everywhere, but Hush didn’t see any people. “You can’t go alone.” Manning looked pained and Hush almost smiled. “I’ve always been alone before. I’ll be fine.” He held his breath as he turned away.
