3: : Grim Reaper

Jax's Frost orbs peered into mine. His black hair was gelled backwards and his mouth moved like he was chewing on something. Well— duh, he was taller than I was. Believe me, I wasn't short. I swear I wasn't. He was just one of those people blessed to be that tall. His frost eyes scanned me from head to toe multiple times with no hint of emotion expressed from him. Soon enough, Julian walked from behind me again and stood beside Jax. He waved a hand at us. "Hi, ladies." Still wearing a grin. "Hi," Ensley replied with her usual angelic smile. "I'm off to break noses." Jax said in more of a whisper, walking away from us. Grim reaper! Wait, that was it? 'Oh, she's the one?' Scans me, and he's off? Stupid! I scoffed. "So…" Julian spoke, "Will…" "Talk with you later, bye. I'm off." I cut him off, once again, walking away. "Guess you're always cutting people off." He gruffed. Nah, that was not true. I was too filled with my problems to bother about boring talks. *** "Bye, Ensley." I gave her a side hug, opened the car door, hopped into it and slammed the door shut. "Good afternoon, Mr Thomas." I greeted, averting my gaze to my almost identical younger sister, Nora. Except the grey eyes she inherited from Dad, and Chestnut eyes Ava and I inherited from Mom, all three of us were so identical. "Good afternoon." She didn't bother to reply to me but I cared less about it, and wore my seatbelt. The drive home was as silent and smooth as ever, mostly because Nora wasn't on and on about the weird happenings in her school. After a couple of minutes, the car finally got to the High Gates of our compound. It was opened, then Mr Thomas swerved into the compound, putting the car to a stop. Grouchily, Nora got out of the car, slamming the door really hard. I got out of the car as well, pulled my school bag along with me and sauntered into the house. "Nora! Lexi!" Ava welcomed us, wearing the most adorable grin ever. She hopped from Mom's lap and ran to us, giving my thighs and tight hug. I chuckled. "How're you, dear?" "Great!" She let go of my thighs. "Hey, Nora." She waved, sprinted to Nora and gave her a hug which Nora returned crankily. "What's up with Nora? Did you get into a fight again? Did Lexi catch you with a dude again?" Mom gasped. "No, Mom." I plopped myself on a couch. "Nora's just being a dork." I reached for a random half-empty glass cup of whatever juice was in it and gulped the remnant of it in one drought. "A dork? I'm being a dork?" She raised her voice at me. "I'm not the one who plans on ruining—" "Nora!" Ava screamed, startling the hell out of me. "Stop fighting! You— you make me wanna cry." She rubbed her wrists on her eyes. "Aw, I'm so sorry." She sat on one of the sofas, holding out her arms for Ava to step in it. Ava hurried into her embrace. As unreal as it seemed, Ava gave me a thumbs up and winked. Such a little liar… I almost laughed. "Lexi, we have to talk." Mom rose to her feet, pulling me upwards by my arm. "Jasper's home now and wants to talk to you." "Why? Aren't we done with this already?" "No, you're not!" Nora snapped. I glared at her. Mom stated between us. "You told her?" "She eavesdropped." I summarized in two words. "Oh… let's go." She tugged me all the way up the stairs and to their room. After multiple inhalations and exhalations, she turned the door's handle open. Dad was seated on a chair in his dark room with his legs crossed, reading something on a book in his hands. "Hi, Jasper. Lexi's here. Bye." What? Bye? She didn't give me the chance to say more words; she pushed me in and shut the door. "Lexi…" Dad smiled shortly, dropped the book on the table, and uncrossed his legs. "Come sit here." He tapped the empty spot beside him. I staggered to him and sat as instructed. "So…" "Jenna already told you about the contract, right?" He chuckled. "Yes." I nodded, waiting for his next words intensely. "And?" He raised his eyebrow. "Why would you do that, Dad?!" I didn't intend to scream so much but it definitely startled him. I cared less about his startled state and continued my rant. "That's the worst decision ever. You literally sold me off. For money? How could you? I was definitely a little girl back then, yet you planned my marriage from then?" "Keep your voice down, Lexi." He commanded in a very soothing and calm tone, not rude. "This is so unfair." I tried my best to look pitiable. "I don't want this. It'd be a limiting factor in my life. Why do you plan on ruining my life? I'm definitely not agreeing to this, I have my rights." I folded my arms across my chest. "Sweetheart, it was only to make the deal bounded. It's like a force that won't break this deal and make things collide forever." He explained. "So? You didn't think of your daughter's life? This will ruin me, don't you know that?" "It wouldn't, I promise. I know you have a…" he was reluctant about saying the next words but still had to, "... boyfriend. And I wouldn't do anything to ruin my darling daughter's life. I would let go of everything for your happiness and you know that. I wouldn't force you into this." "Really?!" I grinned, jumping to give him a tight hug. "You're the best Dad!" He laughed so hard. "You're so funny." I pulled away from the hug. "If I don't want this, I wouldn't have to?" I had to confirm. "Sure, dear. I'd let go of anything for you. I can always try my best to rise back after I fall. That's what keeps me going." His smile dropped. "We're still hosting the dinner party, you know?" He raised his eyebrow. "Dad!" I grumbled, hitting my feet against the floor repeatedly. "I don't want to." "You'll have to." He sniggered. *** New chapters are up! Facebook page: Author Gift Odulesi Instagram: @giftodulesi
