“Thank you, mom,” and Marcy smiled and pressed a cheek. Sue sat up forward with Dwight, Marcy in back leaning with her face between the bucket seats. Sue opened a thermos of coffee and Dwight jacked it with rum. That helped a lot. The park had been closed for the season but with Dwight's truck, they had no trouble negotiating the lane-way up to the falls. Dwight got parked and shut the motor down and Sue swallowed a last large gulp of coffee before stepping out into a silent world shrouded in deep new snow. “I'm going to walk your mother up,” Dwight told Marcy. “Do like I told you.” Marcy waited in the truck while he took Sue by the arm and led her along a drift-strewn path into the woods.
