Noah’s POV
I’m speechless as I watch Maria being escorted out of her home by her mom. It tore at my heart to see a tear roll from one of her eyes. Mrs. Blackburn gave me instructions to lock up the apartment and left me with the payment for my services. I’m not sure what came over me though. I’ve never been so attracted to someone in my life. It was as if the air had been taken from my lungs and she was the only thing giving me life.
I’ve never really dated much. I had one girlfriend back in high school, but it wasn’t real serious. My parents have always taught me to be a gentleman, and that entails not just giving into urges I may have. I don’t know that I could always be a gentleman around Maria though. Already I feel possessive over her and I don’t even know her!
I rake my hands down my face. I remember the look in her eyes. It looked as though a storm was brewing in them. I could see flashes of black in her greenish brown eyes. I must be crazy since that’s not possible. Did Maria feel what I felt? I shake my head. There’s no way. A young lady as beautiful as Maria would never give me the time of day. I’m just ordinary. I go back over to the sink to finish up the job. I’d like to see Maria again, but how? I just sit on the floor for a few moments staring at the pipes under their kitchen sink like it’s going to give me answers. Then it does. I can tell the Blackburns that the sink is usable but I saw another part that needs to be replaced. Yeah. I’ll have my mom call them up first thing on Monday. Mom will explain that we only have evening appointments available right now, so I’ll be here after Maria comes home. I hurried along with my job so I could get home and let mom know to set the plan in motion.
Ruth’s Point of View (Noah’s mom)
The following Monday
Apparently it went better for Noah than we expected taking the job in the woods. I believe that little community is called Emerald Moon. Such a pretty name, though it doesn’t make any sense to me. Apparently Noah met a beautiful young lady, and she made quite an impression on my son. She must be something. My Noah’s head is not so easily turned by women. He’s just always been an even natured boy who said his time would one day come for love. I don’t know many people who feel that way, let alone anyone as young as Noah.
Noah talked with me about calling the Blackburn family about another piece they need for their kitchen sink. Their sink is fine, he just wants to see their daughter again. I told him he should just call and ask her out, but he thinks she’s out of his league. I rolled my eyes. We’ve always taught Noah that everyone is equal. Oh well, I’m going to make the call since my son is too nervous to ask the girl out.
My hand is hovering over the phone when it rings. I sigh and answer my usual “Sexton and Son Plumbing, Ruth speaking.” I was intrigued by the voice on the other end.
“Good afternoon Mrs. Sexton. This is Lucy Blackburn calling.”
“Well Mrs. Blackburn. This is quite a coincidence. I was just about to contact you.”
“Oh! Whatever about?” asked Lucy.
“It seems as though my son discovered something else needed in your kitchen sink while he was there Friday.” I answered her.
“Oh my! The boy must be mistaken. He fixed our sink. It has never worked better.” Lucy exclaims.
“Yes ma’am. The sink is usable, but Noah informed me another part needs to be replaced. And we’ll happy to replace it free of charge.”
I hear some humming and, is she giggling?
“Mrs. Blackburn? Is everything okay?” I inquire.
“Mrs. Sexton. Is your son trying to see my daughter again? I walked in the kitchen to find him staring her down the other day. Does he like my Maria? I need to know.”
I sigh. The gigs up, but I can’t decipher her reaction. I go ahead and give Noah up.
“Mrs.Blackburn. Yes. My son seems to be quite taken with your daughter. In fact I’ve never see him like this over just meeting a girl. I’m not sure what to make of it. He asked me to call you about your sink needing another piece, when in reality, he just wants to see your daughter again.” I hear laughing and a hallelujah on the other end of the line.
“Mrs.Sexton. This is the best news! Maria wants to see Noah as well. She really likes him, but is afraid he doesn’t feel the same for her. Is Noah available to come back out this evening? Maria would be so excited to see him. You can just let him believe he’ll be coming to fix something and I’ll order pizza for them!”
I blinked. I like this Lucy. I truly hope our kids get along and at the very least become friends. I could use a friend myself and I just feel Lucy would be a great one.
“That sounds wonderful Mrs.Blackburn!”
“Please, call me Lucy!” she laughs on the other end.
I’m not sure why but Lucy’s laugh is comforting and joyous. It lifts my spirits.
I answer her in return, “please call me Ruth. Then it is settled. Noah will be over this evening. Thank you!”
Lucy POV
So dear Noah has a crush on Maria! I can’t wait for her to get home so she can see him. I’ve got a few errands to run before they get here. I’m going to bake some chocolate chip cookies as well. Maria told me that Noah smells like chocolate chip cookies. It makes sense now how the scent of these particular cookies has always soothed her. I’m baking cookies so she won’t recognize his scent right off.
I grab my keys and open the front door when I get a mindlink from my husband. My face pales. Of all the days to have a rouge attack. We hardly ever have them anymore. I don’t have time to call Noah’s mom back right now. I have to help get people to safety. I just hope and pray that by some miracle, Noah doesn’t get a chance to come today.
Maria POV
I’m listening to sad music in my car on my way back from school. I’ve been struggling to pay attention to anything. All I can think about is Noah. I want him. BAD! I left school a little early. Told them I was sick. In a way, I am. My heart hurts. I’m creeping up on the road that leads to my pack, but I drive right past. I’m going into town. Maybe I’ll run into Noah. I’m going to have to take action on my own. He’s my mate, and if I don’t do something fast, my dad is going to marry me off to that playboy.
As I roll into town, my gas light comes on. Crap. I forgot to pump gas earlier. My mind is just too consumed right now. I pull over at the closest gas station and jump out to pump. When I’m finished, I walk in to pay, come out, and am about to get into my car when some guy stops me.
“Hey beautiful” he smirks.
I take a look at him. He has blonde hair, green eyes, and looks like he works out regularly. He’s toned without it being too much. I bet he has all the girls he wants, but he’s not getting this girl. I go to move around him and leave but he stays firm between myself and my car.
“My name’s Chad. I haven’t seen you around here. What’s your name?” he continues.
“My name is none of your concern.”
As I try to walk around him again, he grabs my arm, and then I hear the sweetest voice in the world.
“Chad, what do you think you’re doing to her?” Noah asked sternly.
Chad glanced up at Noah, obviously they know each other. Chad throws his hands up in surrender,
“Yo Noah. How’s it going? Is this your girl?”
I look from Chad to Noah, and without hesitation Noah claims me, “Yes she is! I would appreciate it if you wouldn’t bother her anymore.”
In that moment, I fell hard, again, for my mate. My Noah.
“I’m sorry Noah. If I had known she was your girlfriend, I would have never bothered her. See y’all around.”
And with that, Chad waves and is on his way.
Noah stares after him until Chad drives down the road, then he turns back to me, “Maria I’m so..”
But he didn’t get the rest out of his mouth. I ran right into his arms. Wrapping myself tight around Noah, I thanked him. That was an uncomfortable situation, but now I see Noah cares about me.
Noah leans down to the top of my head and breathes in.
“Maria, you don’t have to thank me. Chad thinks he’s God’s gift to women. I didn’t mean to tell him you’re mine, I just,” he pauses “didn’t know what else to say.”
I step back from his embrace and look at him. He’s so beautiful, I feel so lucky.
“Noah it’s fine. I’m glad you told him that. It was a very uncomfortable situation to be honest.”
Noah scratches the back of his head and smiles.
“You know, I’m supposed to be heading out to your place again, about now, to fix something else in your kitchen.” My heart sinks at that. I’d hoped to spend some time with Noah. It’s the reason I came into town.
“Oh. I had actually come into town to see you.” I admitted to Noah.
“To see me?” he questions.
“Yes. Ever since I met you the other day. I just can’t get you off my mind. I wanted to see if you might like to go out with me.” I looked at the ground as I confessed.
Nothing. Silence. Oh no, I must have read him wrong the other day. I start to get anxious and Sasha is pacing in my mind.
“Seriously!? You wanted to ask me out? That was the only reason I was coming out to your house again. There’s nothing that needs to be fixed. I just wanted a chance to see you again Maria.”
I finally look up to see his eyes fixated on me. I smile and ask him if we can just grab some dinner now.
He tells me there’s a nice family owned diner right down the road. That sounds perfect. I take out my phone to send my mom a message about where I’ll be.
I go to get in my car to follow him there when he asks me something. “What is that perfume you wear?”
“Perfume?” I question him.
Noah half smiles and says, “yeah. It smells so good; just like coconuts. It might sound silly, but that’s my favorite scent.”
“Oh, uhm. I’m not sure about the name of it. It’s probably something I borrowed from my mom.” I lie.
He nods his head and gets in his truck. As I pull out behind him, just giddy about our first date, I start pondering. I don’t wear any perfume, and I don’t smell like coconuts to anyone else. How is Noah able to pick up my scent so strongly?
